    Good review. I was doing the side by side with you. The white label hands down. Not that the black label is bad, but the white label stands out. I think it due to the minimum four years aging and the proof. I think it stands up to some others costing ten or even fifteen dollars more. If you're on tight budget and don't think you can afford a slightly more expensive bourbon, think again. Not a bad option at all.

    Scott:
    LOVED the detailed comparison. Tonight I did a comparison of my own, EVAN WILLIAMS Bottled-In-Bond vs HEAVEN HILL 7 year old Bottled-In-Bond. Here are my Impressions:
    SLÁINTE
    Make
    Doing a Head to Head tonight; here are my results. I enjoy both bourbons.
    EVAN WILLIAMS BiB vs. HEAVEN HILL 7 yr. old BiB
    5/30/20
    The EVAN WILLIAMS is slightly lighter in color as would be expected from time in the barrel. They are both medium brown generally. The nose is brown sugar which follows on the palate with the addition of spiciness and a drying sense. The mouthfeel is medium The Finish is very drying with a corn sweetness in the end.
    The HEAVEN HILL Bottled-in-Bond is slightly darker in color and has a maltiness on the nose. It is spicy and drying on the palate with a medium mouthfeel and a mouthwatering sense in the Finish.
    My experience of these two sister bourbons are almost identical. This is my second sitting with both of these expressions and the first glasses were both richer with more of the classic bourbon notes. The E.W. had a brown sugar note tonight where the H.H. was malty. I did let them sit in the glass for an equal amount of time and I drank water between the glasses to cleanse my palate. I wonder if the extra expense is worth it. I like them both, but further glasses may tell the tale.

    Great review Scott. EW Black was the first bourbon I really liked back when it had a 7 yr age statement and, up until a few years ago, was my daily drinker and cocktail bourbon. But now, I find it, as you did, just too thin and lacking it character. But, it's still way better than Jim Beam White Label, IMO. And, your assessment of EW BiB is spot on. I always have a bottle open in my bar.

      @@mybourbonjourneyHi there, sorry for the late reply, actually it's a little bit complicated for me to find a bottle of Evan William White Label in Vietnam (as i live in Vietnam). With that said, I am happy to let you know that I have managed to get one yesteday and have the opportunity to taste it right away!
      Please kindly note that I am just a normal whisky drinker, therefore my opinion is very straight forward. Let’s get into it! as for the nose matter, it smells strong and spicy, nice vanilla and wood presence, I like it! As for the taste, as I use to sip neat little by little; for me, it’s a bit spicy and aggressive for my throat, however, it is sweet, creamier and easy in my mouth and palate. Overall, I like it much!
      To compare, the 2 whisky that I use to drink daily so far is the Ballantine’s Finest (same price category than EW Black) and the Chivas Regal 12 Year Old (almost double price).
      From now on, thanks to your review and what I actually tasted, I will definitely replace the Ballantine’s Finest with the Evan Williams White Label Bottled in Bond. However, I will keep the Chivas Regal 12 which I love so much for everything: the nose, the smell, the taste, the color, the style of the bottle but not the price hahaha etc…
      I wish you good health and lot of pleasure to continue to help people (like me) to learn, to enjoy another kind of whisky in the world of whisky!
      Thank you so much again for your kindness and very professional review.

    I keep a bottle BIB in my decanter for mixed drinks and for friends that come over and just prefer to get plastered. Because it's in the decanter they assume it cost more than it actually does. Keeps them happy and out of my more expensive bottles which in turn makes me happy.

    There's a place I like to go that has handles of EW BiB for $25. It is easily one of if not the best bang for the buck out there and I use it for *everything*. It's my go to for cocktails or even just "whiskey and coke" when a guest doesn't want a drink on the rocks or neat and doesn't specify. EW Black is whack, EW BiB is Crib -- I always associate it with tasting peanut brittle in the gift shop of a Cracker Barrel. I usually get lots of peanut in the Heaven Hill/Beam Suntory lines, but I would say this is the best value handle in most US states. Buffalo Trace/Elijah Craig Small Batch are better, but also cost more. Great review!

I know the bib is the better version...but I just love this classic American Bourbon....in Canada, where I live the 43% is under 25 bucks and the white label ...if you can find it...is under 35 bucks. Very good review, very detailed. I'm not a good one to pick out different flavors that you are talking about. I usually buy the black label. It's affordable but my local grocery store didn't have it so I took a chance with the white label. I just mixed up my drink of choice, that being the white label, lots of ice and zero Pepsi. The flavors linger a bit more than the black label. I like it alot. I don't care for drinking my whiskey neat. I hope this shortege ends soon. I'm really enjoying my Evan Williams. I have a favorite domestic beer as a change of pace because I like my beer as well. I'm also a gin and tonic lover but gin was a bit higher priced so that influenced my choice at the grocery store. Nice to have choices yet.

    i think you were right on in all your points...i would just add that i consider the black label to be more versatile and the perfect party bourbon...those who are so inclined can do shots without their heads getting blown off...those who want to mix with coke will be happy...and those who want a taste of some classic bourbon flavor rolling around in their mouth will be quite satisfied...and for under $25, you can be the hero and show up with a handle of the stuff!....it's true about the white label...it might be the best bang for the bourbon buck out there, but honestly, i find myself not reaching for it very often...because when i'm looking to settle down and get a little more serious about my whiskey, i'd rather cozy on up to a dram of four roses SB or knob creek SB or eagle rare...granted, all of those are more than twice the price, but the EW BiB doesn't really come close to hitting the spot like they do

    Interestingly, Evan Williams seems to jack up their prices in the European market more than other entry level bourbons do. 20€ online for the black label 700ml vs 21€ for Four Roses 1L and Buffalo Trace 700ml, so it's got tough competition. • @motohead077
    @motohead077 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    From what I understand, these started as the exact same whiskey, only difference is the BIB has less water added before being bottled (same mashbill, both aged 4+ yrs per law of "Straight Bourbon" & Heaven Hill claims the Black label averages 6-8yrs. So, theoretically if you remove the right amount of water from the Black Label to make it 100P, it should be the same thing as EW White. So does anyone know a procedure to remove water from whiskey (still?), to make the black label 100, 110, 120 proof? It is much less expensive here for EW Black, $16-17 for 1.75L vs $28-32 for 1.75L of EW White BIB.. Then maybe try to improve it with oak spirals/chips.

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are correct, however they aren't removing water frkm the whiskey, they are adding water to tge higher proof whiskey to being it down to a lower proof. Remember, the more water you add, the more bottles you get as well. That's how they proof whiskey, by adding water, not removing it. Cheers 🥃

    • @motohead077
      @motohead077 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mybourbonjourney Hi, Thanks for reply. My original was maybe somewhat unclear, so let me clarify what I was asking/stating. Yes, the whiskey comes out of barrels at a higher proof than they are bottles at. So they add water to it, to make it 86 proof. To make the whiskey 100 proof (from same barrels), they also add water, but less water than they would to make it 86 proof. That's all I was stating there.. So my main question is; starting with EW Black whiskey, what is the procedure to remove water from it, to increase the proof? I know it is possible, but don't know how difficult it is, or if it would ruin the whiskey.. Distillers use a procedure to increase the proof of the distillate for any spirit, as it originally only ferments to a maximum of ~15% abv. Also, people do it to purify water.

    • @motohead077
      @motohead077 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know most people have never even thought of this, so it may be difficult to communicate my thoughts via txt. Basically, I'm looking for a way to remove some of the water added by Heaven Hill bottlers, to bring the whiskey closer back to how it was, when it originally came out of the barrels. It's like mixing drinks, but in reverse.

    Scott:
    In line with the Heaven Hill theme.
    SLÁINTE
    Mike
    Picked up a bottle of HEAVEN HILL 7 year old Bottled-in-Bond today. I wish I could have been able to get the 6 year old which was only available in Kentucky, but I enjoyed this one very much.
    HEAVEN HILL 7 Year old Bottled in Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
    5/3/20
    First Pour from the Bottle. Left the Bourbon sit in the glass for 30 minutes to open.
    Mash Bill: 78% corn, 12% malted barley, 10% rye
    COLOR: Mahogany with a nice ring and legs that run modestly
    NOSE: Boozy Corn; transitioning to a dusty corn.
    PALATE: Sweet arrival with a dry corn note and overall drying sense yet a rich mouth feel that gets silky as I swirl it around with hints of cream corn.
    FINISH Spicy and Very Drying. There is a sandpaper dryness which creates a mouthwatering sense. The boozy corn note returns in the end with a bit of granulated sugar.
    With 1 drop of spring water
    NOSE: Light sweet candy mixed with spice
    PALATE: A mix of sweet and spice. The mouthfeel remains rich there is a bit of an alcohol burn which dissipates as I swirl. The swirling creates a dry sense almost powdery.
    FINISH: Sweet turning to a spicy dryness which feels as if the whisky has evaporated; but then there is a mouthwatering sense.
    With 2 drops of spring water
    NOSE: a light wood char note with a sweet note that I can not place also there.
    PALATE: Light sweet candy arrival mixing with spice; a light alcohol burn; then a drying sense with light spiciness.
    FINISH: Very Dry and mouthwatering with a light spicy tingle on the tip of my tongue. Again the evaporating sense with a granulated sugar note on my tongue
    This was a very enjoyable glass. I loved cream corn growing up and I love when I get a cream corn note in a bourbon. It is a combination of corn sweetness with the rich creamy mouthfeel. I also like how notes reappeared in different stages; for example the boozy corn note in the Nose Neat reappearing in the Finish. I also enjoyed the evaporating sense. I have never gotten that in a whiskey before. I need to do a Head to Head of this and EVAN WILLIAMS Bottled-in-Bond taste and enjoy the differences. Highly Recommended!!

    You mentioned multiple times that the EW White Label is aged at least 4 yrs since it's BiB. I just wanted to make note of the fact that EW Black is aged at least 4 yrs since it is straight bourbon whiskey with no age statement (that is actually true of any straight whiskey, bourbon or otherwise). So without age statements all we know is that both versions are aged at least 4 yrs.

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are 100% correct. I was probably just trying ti say with it being BiB I has to be at least 4 years old. As you said a straight bourbon non age stated should be 4cyears old too. I find the less than 100 proof Bourbons don't mix well, Wild Turkey 81 is the only one I tend to like as a mix but the 101 is better. That said I really like the BiB Evan Williams, it is a nice mixer with Ginger Ale, I don't like it as a sipper though, but it is perfect to mix and at that proof it's not lost in the mix. I tried some regular Buffalo Trace which everyone seems to like and I hated it in a mix, totally lost... BT needs to be closer to 100 proof even if I wanted to sip on it. I go back to EW BiB for mixed drinks as it's cheaper than some and stands up. (I do prefer WT 101 and Bulleit but the difference isn't huge when mixing with soda but definitely prefer 101 or Bulleit in a Manhattan or higher end cocktails) I could sip the BiB but there are better options for not much more money, but I love it with Ginger Ale. I've not tried making a Manhattan with it yet though.
    When there is about $5 difference and 20 more proof and a lot more flavor, it is a no-brainer to go with the BiB white label

      Hey Preston thanks for watching and your question.
      Based on what it is you described it sounds like you want something a little bolder with some sweetness?
      If so, give these few a try, give the knob creek 9 year or single barrel a try, great bourbon and ones you can find just about anywhere. Also I'd recommended trying something from Old Forester, they have a great lineup and one I'm sure you'll really enjoy such as the 1920 or 1910 or Signature 100. Finally give the Woodford Double Oaked a try, full of flavor but won't blow you away with proof. One final brand would be Michter's they have a nice bourbon and American Whiskey and really nice single barrel rye. Let me know how that works out and we can go from there. Cheers and I hope you find something to enjoy. Cheers 🥃

    had the green and black never had the white label

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Give the white label a try, has a bit more complexity with the additional proof. Forc me it also shines through much better if you're using it for cocktails. Cheers and thanks for watching.

      Dean, I hate to say it but it's honestly people like you that frustrate me! You're so quick to tell people what smell or taste, YOU'RE WRONG, YOU can't tell anyone whats good, bad or what it is they smell or taste, period. How about you drink what you like and stop telling others they're right or wrong. Hey bro, don't be that guy, trust me.

    Would either of these be suitable to make vanilla extract?

      I know nothing about making vanilla extract but I guess I'd say yes. Good luck, sounds delicious!

      LT, thank you for watching. The white label is a really nice pour, great to sip on and great for cocktails. The black label I'd say is a cocktail only bourbon. Cheers!

    God damn whisky is so expensive in my country ;_; A 70 cl bottle of white label here is 40 bucks and a black label 70 cl is 34 bucks... Maan i hate it here

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not just expensive there, I'll tell you that. Now with that being said, we do get some things a bit cheaper for sure because of where we are. I appreciate you checking out the video and commenting. Cheers!

    • @mybourbonjourney
      @mybourbonjourney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd maybe consider $40 for the white label but not $34 for a 70cl. I'd definitely pay $6 more to step up in proof and quality

      That used to be my regular purchase in the Chicago area, also $30. But then the 1.75 of the BIB was suddenly and mysteriously discontinued in my region. Really pissed me off!
