Can't believe we're still talking about cybergrind in 2024. I'm 27 now and I was making cybergrind music that maybe 5 people listened to when I was 12/13.
It never ceases to amaze me how consistent the 20 year cycle is for predicting resurgences and nostalgia. People started getting misty eyed over the Star Wars prequel bang on time, The Matrix got a legacy sequel bang on time amd now Nu Metal is back!
Let's not forget Korn and Nu-Metal's contribution to the 'Queen of the Damned' film soundtrack. An adaption of the very queer Vampire Chronicles novels by Anne Rice.
Jonathan Davis was the sound track director and wrote the songs sung in the movie. his record label wouldn't let his vocals be on the soundtrack release so we got chester, wayne, david, marilyn, and jay instead' on the soundtrack

I'd also argue that at least some debt is owed to Agoraphobic Nosebleed, O.L.D. (particularly their later records), and that whole mini-wave of industrial thrash bands like Malhavoc and Nailbomb. The bizarre Japanese psych-grind act Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ also feel very proto-cybergrind aesthetically speaking, and certainly the Czech deathgrind scene (Contrastic, !T.O.O.H!, etc.) had some extremely weird shit going on in a similar vein.

The whole time I kept thinking of the Slayer/Atari Teenage Riot song on the Spawn album: "No Remorse (I wanna Die)". Great music. But as an oldster now I loved stuff like 'My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult', 'Revolting Cocks', stuff like that. It intermingled so much stuff and was tongue-in-cheek and dark.
Love this video and that it exists. Also grew up on nu-metal as the first style of music I latched onto. Branched deeper into death metal, grind, BM, hardcore, etc and put nu-metal on the back burner for twenty years pretty much. But I came back to it deeply by doing my own tribute to it with my project Memorrhage but fusing nu with some of the subject matter and elements of extreme metal I picked up over the years from my other projects. Also special thanks to Holiday Kirk’s passionate helm of ‘crazy ass moments in nu-metal history’ for spearheading this lightbulb moment for me personally getting back into it more than ever these last two years.
Looks like this 4am just got a little bit brighter; nice to see you again! Nu-metal arrived at a certain point in music-business history, too; the point where the big corporate entities, the Clear Channels, Live Nations, and big labels, re-established their control after having it been seriously threatened by the rise of "indie" music culture and industry. What that meant could take a book to poorly explain; but i suspect it meant something.
One of the best parts of a resurgence is it brings to light all the great stuff released in the "lull period" that got no attention previously. There's a Japanese band called ikd-sj (weird name I know) that's had their 2009 album blow up recently, pretty good. People should give the track Oddeye a listen at least to see if it's something they'd be into
DAMN i was big into this channel when was like 11/12?? and i had a cybergrind phase in like junior year .... just relistened to that cutting pink with knives album today
as a zoomer who spent my days chasing the smoke of 90s punk and early 2000s emo and kept that lifestyle up to this day (i followed MCR on their recent tour up and down the west coast a true religious experience) i was under the impression forever that nu metal was the cishet guy version of the same scene as me closed off to my type of rage. but seeing the nu metal renaissance from the ground up and seeing the two groups kind of melting and merged has been a true delight! there is something to be said for genres so quickly written off by the masses for being too lame/gay/girly/masculine having their second wind in the weeds of weirdos who appreciate it for what it was trying to do, not what the media said it was doing. Great video! still wild having you back! and bring up great conversations as always! i wouldn’t be mad if you made a video on the emo revival too if you felt so inclined 😉

I've been a proud nu-head since that fateful afternoon in 1999 when Korn's Freak on a Leash video came up on TRL and my mind was blown. That moment is directly responsible for me developing my taste, not only in nu-metal and heavy rock, but in music in general, rather than just listening to my parents' music and top 40 hits. what about (early) genghis tron? they were peak myspace era. not a lot of bands in "the scene" at that time using synths and drum machines.
