I agree with your sentiment and will definitely avoid this product, but they’re far from the first or the only company to do this.

Well as me I would be fine since I obey and abide by what the authorities have given us to follow. I guess if like you who likes to break laws and discuss it with our friends then this would be a problem.
AI friends will prove invaluable to the aging Baby-boomer generation. Prior to AI agents (friends) tens of thousands of elderly people lived alone with poor health and diet care, slowly declining in mental health due to loneliness. Many died due to neglect. AI friends will remind the elderly to take their medications, to go outside for fresh air/nature, monitor their vital signs and contact family members and healthcare providers. They will also ask questions, make uplifting comments, read them books, and make them laugh.

This is another physical gadget that is hard pressed to answer why a new hardware device is called for in order to deliver what’s being promised. Most of what they demonstrate is already possible with a phone. And what is new could easily be accommodated by extending the reach of the phone in your pocket. This is all entirely separate from concerns about the device’s utility, security and longevity.
My take : The very last thing I need is yet another app sending me notifications on my phone. As is I only glance at 99% of notifications before just clicking "Clear all".
No server connection. On-device AI. Basic initial settings only (name, gender, age). Personafied voice and appearance. Gentle haptic feedback for random emotional indication. And there you got a Japanese version of this product.
I respect people's creativity and coming up with new ideas. I like my friends but I don't want to be around them 24/7. I'm sure they don't want to be around me all the time either. Now, since I am a person who talks to himself, I will wear a fake device so it looks like I'm talking to my device.

It’s bad enough there’s people on their phone in the grocery store or people that can’t use their AirPods listening to music. I don’t need one more thing where people can be noisy. I’ve missed phones in peoples homes where I didn’t have to hear their conversations.
Obviously it’s stupid but I like the form factor for talking to an ai. We need like a Star Trek shirt pin or necklace that’s easy to hit with either hand to start a convo with ai, or maybe a gesture like touching thumb to pinky

Well, clearly they did. The R1 does a whole lot of nothing for $200. Whereas this does SOMETHING for half the price, and doesn't make a large amount of future promises beyond the idea of having a friend that is AI. Still skeptical, but it's better. 🤷♂️
I wouldn't think it would ask you questions. I assume it would just be connected and have "full" access to your phone. Including emails, texts, purchases, etc.
I think the only healthy way for this sort of thing to exist is as a medical tool, marketed as a medical tool & not as a friend to set a clear boundary. For example, people with depression have extremely negative thoughts about almost everything & having a positive AI that forces them to engage with a better outlook can potentially be easier than getting them to lie to themselves until it sticks, the part of their trailer where the bot says “at least we’re outside” feels quite healthy compared to everything else. The issue as it stands is that the company running the AI makes it to collect data so they want u to rely on this crutch forever if possible, a medical tool needs to be intended as a temporary tool to improve someone’s life & I don’t trust that without serious consultation from psychiatrists on how the AI should operate.
We need the disabled community, adhders, autistic people and people with onset Alzheimers to be the ones behind the AI designing scene. To me, AI seems like something that could be extremely useful for disabled people first and foremost, and then go on to be adapted for 'regular' people moving forward. As someone who is disabled and struggling with my mental health, I could REALLY do with a 'second brain' - an entity that only exists to support me in the ways my own brain can't support itself. Friends and family are great, but as you said, humans come with their own emotions, wants and needs... it's unfair for me to expect another human to take on my burdens aswell as their own, friend or not. If an AI tool could process my anxious self talk, pick up on the things I keep forgetting to do, and learn how to assist me without guilt tripping me or assigning blame like most humans accidentally do... that AI tool would be priceless to me. Absolutely priceless.
It could be useful if it was called Therapist. I’ve just been going through some heavy stuff, and it might be nice to be able to record thoughts instantly rather than needing to pull out my phone and launch an app. Sometimes good therapy is just thinking through things out loud with another person. Heck, have it run Eliza on the phone and prompt me to reflect further 😏

16:30 Does anyone need this or want this? Let's find out? It's a very new product category, so companies are trying things out and seeing what sticks or works. How else would you check if people want it? Without making it? (But in the next phone review you'll say that phones designs have gotten boring and no one tries anything new anymore) And a cash grab? A product in a totally new field with probably quite high upfront production costs, that's quite likely to fail, taking into account how other similar products have fared? This doesn't sound like a well thought out opinion.

it can't hear sounds directly, only words. if you try making a sound to ChatGPT voice ui - it will ask you to describe it. so friend won't be recognizing the sound of falafel/keychain unless you name it out loud.
If your smart phone “that isn’t spying on you” will finally admit that it’s spying on everything you say, it could be a “friend” without buying that device. You know that time you were talking to your real human friend about something random you never googled or watched on TH-cam. Then soon after you received a suggestion by advertisement or video. Yet there is nothing enabled on your phone that indicates it should be listening to you.
If they want to make "friend" into a "fun" gimmick they should make it double sided one red and one green side and call it frenemy.. I think you get the concept: when you have the green side out it's your friend and when the red side is out it's in enemy mode and will be a sarcastic idiot.
One good thing it can really help with is guilt-tripping you everytime you order a meal _"How's the falafel? That's 3000 calories added good on you! You're climbing the ladder to obesity!"_

The vibe from the first time I watched I thought it was a A24 movie trailer
it can't hear sounds directly, only words. if you try making a sound to ChatGPT voice ui - it will ask you to describe it. so friend won't be recognizing the sound of falafel/keychain unless you name it out loud.
11:00 it can’t be real. It’s an ad for a comedy film or something.
I wonder why I can’t separate constant-listening devices from data collection.
If it doesn't ask you questions how can it farm you for reviews to sell ads on.
One good thing it can really help with is guilt-tripping you everytime you order a meal
_"How's the falafel? That's 3000 calories added good on you! You're climbing the ladder to obesity!"_
Apple: noted!
Coming up in iOS 22.
I only see Luddites who do not see the potential of this type of technology.
