Up to that, there is a risk that they go for a walk for no reason and cant find their way home. They forget simple things like how to make tea. They lose their memory and reapeat conversations or forget faces. I think the Idea has potential. My hope was that it is just a small local llm. I think you guyses view has a bit been skewed by all the negative potentials of something like this. The movie scene is very biast towards that. There are a lot of books who explore also the positive potential for personal AI assistants, think the only positive one I remember in movies is Jarvis from Iron Man.
This is always framed on YT as „you have to be sad and alone to like this“. But I don‘t think the potential of such AI is in replacing your friends, but in having an „entity“ that is about your live. A kind of pet that can talk, like that robot dog on dr who maybe. I think most people will be able to separate this „relationship“ from irl relationships. This to me is similar to a „Nintendog“ if you remember that game.

AI friends will prove invaluable to the aging Baby-boomer generation. Prior to AI agents (friends) tens of thousands of elderly people lived alone with poor health and diet care, slowly declining in mental health due to loneliness. Many died due to neglect. AI friends will remind the elderly to take their medications, to go outside for fresh air/nature, monitor their vital signs and contact family members and healthcare providers. They will also ask questions, make uplifting comments, read them books, and make them laugh.

This is another physical gadget that is hard pressed to answer why a new hardware device is called for in order to deliver what’s being promised. Most of what they demonstrate is already possible with a phone. And what is new could easily be accommodated by extending the reach of the phone in your pocket. This is all entirely separate from concerns about the device’s utility, security and longevity.

We need the disabled community, adhders, autistic people and people with onset Alzheimers to be the ones behind the AI designing scene. To me, AI seems like something that could be extremely useful for disabled people first and foremost, and then go on to be adapted for 'regular' people moving forward.
As someone who is disabled and struggling with my mental health, I could REALLY do with a 'second brain' - an entity that only exists to support me in the ways my own brain can't support itself. Friends and family are great, but as you said, humans come with their own emotions, wants and needs... it's unfair for me to expect another human to take on my burdens aswell as their own, friend or not. If an AI tool could process my anxious self talk, pick up on the things I keep forgetting to do, and learn how to assist me without guilt tripping me or assigning blame like most humans accidentally do... that AI tool would be priceless to me. Absolutely priceless.

I think the only healthy way for this sort of thing to exist is as a medical tool, marketed as a medical tool & not as a friend to set a clear boundary. For example, people with depression have extremely negative thoughts about almost everything & having a positive AI that forces them to engage with a better outlook can potentially be easier than getting them to lie to themselves until it sticks, the part of their trailer where the bot says “at least we’re outside” feels quite healthy compared to everything else. The issue as it stands is that the company running the AI makes it to collect data so they want u to rely on this crutch forever if possible, a medical tool needs to be intended as a temporary tool to improve someone’s life & I don’t trust that without serious consultation from psychiatrists on how the AI should operate.

it can't hear sounds directly, only words. if you try making a sound to ChatGPT voice ui - it will ask you to describe it. so friend won't be recognizing the sound of falafel/keychain unless you name it out loud.

This sounds like Apple's Siri only it sounds more creepy because it knows what you are doing all the time. Siri on the other hand, is very similar and nosey but without the critiquing.

I think the problem with this is there is no physical and likely no one will care about it after the "neat" goes away. Like you basically drag this thing around, it only figures out what is going on by audio, and it can't influence anything in real life. And likely it has a horrible memory.
BTW it might have the LLM 100% locally. They likely are using a low end LLM. Some of the lower end ones you can run of a raspberry pi. If this is the case then it truly will forget things extremely quickly. Like minutes. Like you can run a 7b LLM on a raspberry pi. If I remember right, 7B has something like a 500 token limit.

Discussions of possible benefits and downsides in regards to how it effects interactions with real people. Ok interesting, but now what about not having enough self awareness to clearly evaluate the risks of using this kind of thing? I feel like this sort of thing should be regulated like alcohol and only be available to adults.
