  • Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain presents his 2020 'Legacy of the Beast' drum kit from his new drum brand the British Drum Co. The legendary metal drummer has made one of the biggest moves in the drum industry in decades. Back on a British drum brand, he now plays British Drum Co drums. Not only is this gear switch so special because it involves Nicko McBrain, the fact that the British Drum Co is only four years old makes it literally breaking and world news. Watch Nicko McBrain present and explain his move to the British Drum Co in the video below.
    Drummerszone was invited to the official event where the British Drum Co, together with Nicko McBrain, announced that from now on he is playing the Manchester based drum brand and carries the title International Ambassador with it. As unique as this historic moment already was, the location was just as special: the event took place at the Robinsons Brewery in Manchester, the same brewery where Iron Maiden's Trooper beer is made and distributed from.

    Drum Center of Portsmouth has been carrying these drums for a couple of years and they sound absolutely incredible on TH-cam and I'm going to make the journey sometime next year to go there with my new wife to buy and check out new equipment and I definitely want to hit British Drum Company drums even if it's just for 30 seconds. When Nicko Mcbrain went back to Sonor I thought he'd never leave, but this is the absolute best step for him in his future....bravo!

      Greg Peller Why do you believe it’s great that Nicks screwed over Sonor. He left them once for Premier and now he left again for another
      British company. He must value dealing with Brits over anything else. Now without knowing the story 100% I can’t fully pass judgement but it still seems very shitty of him to start another relationship with Somor to only leave them after 4 years considering the amazing work they did for him.

    His LOTB Sonor kit will be hard or impossible to beat, it was by far his best sounding kit to date and one of the best I have ever heard. I think this is likely a step backwards soundwise.

    I'm a Nicko fan through and through and I always will; but sometimes those we look up to can sometimes disappoint us. The way he went about this is really bad IMHO. He basically admitted in this video that the Sonor endorsement was just a transition move for a few years until he had the opportunity to work with the people he really wanted. That's really sad. He burned Sonor TWICE. They built him those amazing kits for Book of Souls and Legacy. Then he left after 4 years. If this guy Keith needed a few years to get a new company started, then Nicko should have commissioned his kits from somebody without actually endorsing a company. There's no law that says you have to endorse a drum company when you're in a big rock band. You can just order something as a customer and pay for it. Nicko said about Sonor a few years ago: "I am so humbled to be back and I never should have left." It doesn't seem like he feels that way now. I wish good things for Nicko and for anyone else involved; but I think from Sonor's perspective, it's no fun getting taken advantage of.

    • @shramiac
      @shramiac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually, he's only burnt Sonor once. Sonor had been getting lax with their service to him in the early 90's, culminating with them not supplying a decent kit for him to use on the Australian/NZ tour in late 1992. The kit he was given belonged to an Australian customer that Sonor "hired". It was a second from the bottom level kit (a Force 3000 I think?) and the floor tom broke on the NZ leg so Nicko got pissed off and half trashed the kit. It had to be repaired to finish the rest of the tour in Australia. I remember being disappointed when I watched them play in Sydney and Nicko only had 4 toms on his kit. He was in a good mood at the drum clinic he did in the afternoon at Billy Hydes Music (please correct if wrong...it was 27 years ago lol). I still have a 6" "Trax" drum head he autographed at the clinic.
      There is a video on YT where Nicko tells the story about that kit and how it was the breaking point for him and Sonor.
      But, in all honesty...it's not a great look this time considering the last two kits Sonor had made for Nicko and that this new one is the same as his last Sonor kit that only a year ago, he made glowing videos about. I can understand his love for British products (being British himself) but considering he lives in the US, it seems a tad hypocritical.
      Still, we don't know the whole story to be honest so I'll cut him some slack! lol I hope they're reasonably priced kits considering the cost of the Sonor's!

      shramiac I thought Nicks lived in England. So is his drum shop located in the US? Because if it is that would make sense to want to foster a relationship with them being able to get more drums into the US market. And I’m betting Nicko is an investor in BDC. That scenario wouldn’t shock me one bit and it makes perfect sense.

    Throughout his career, the only truly great kits Nicko has had, have been from Sonor. They provided the drums which made the classic albums so superb, and I was happy to hear that sound again, on The Book of Souls tour. Now he will probably return to that dry, boring sound that his premier sets had. Maybe it's just me, but Sonor brought the best out of Nicko 😐

Based on the explanation he gave in the video but it seems Nicko is aware that it is a very green behind the ears company but that doesn't matter to him, he seems to care far more about being part of a "british" company and having part ownership/creative say in it and it seems now he's really seeking to have those kinds of positions with the companies he uses, he's the ambassador for BDC now just as he has been with Paiste cymbals for years now

    He probably left Sonor in part because of Brexit. Since Switzerland is not part of the EU, Paiste cymbals stay. And of course, because no other cymbal brands sound as wonderful as Paiste. He could have a Tama drum set and make Maiden records sound killer as well. Tama was (and it still is) THE heavy metal drum kit manufacturer to beat. But hey, nothing against being a patriot and supporting your country's products. I'm in US but I'll never buy a DW kit. Ludwig, maybe. IMHO DWs sound like mud through the microphones. I hope BDC doesn't end up like Premier, that had some great sounding kits (Signias) and some killer snares but failed miserably in the world market place.

      Hi MrNickDrummer,
      Sometimes we find we need to clear the air on presumptions made on our channel. Nicko's switch had nothing to do with Brexit or EU related topics. The founder of BDC and Nicko go way back to their Premier days, and they found each other again in the products that BDC is making and that have enough quality and sound for a band like Iron Maiden. We are still transcribing an interview we did with Nicko where he explains his switch in the finest detail. Hopefully it will be online soon! (It was 2 hrs of sheer fun!)
