Did a lap hanging on to his wheel as a junior at the Crystal Palace Tuesday night crits once. Good God he was quick!
All was fine until he looked over his shoulder, said "You've been lapped, haven't you?". He was right of course, so I "let" him on his merry way ;)
I'll never forget riding up that hill at close to 30 mph...
I asked Sean for one of his numbers from the 1996 Leeds Classic which I think was his last pro race in the UK. Still have it. So old school and hard as nails.
I still have a pair of Motorola jerseys on account of SY... still ride out in them. What a top bloke
Love the banter. Mentioned the Leeds Classic, I asked Sean for his number after he finished as it was his last pro race in the UK and he let me have it, #66 , still got it.

Only 600 views and 14 likes, wtf. My hero, not so much Wiggo but he is growing on me :-) he's not quite the arrogant persona you saw in the 2011 and 12 and has come across really well on Eurosport. But Sean Yates, now there's a man, followed him for years, since the 80's with Peugeot and Fagor and then latterly Motorola, awesome rider. I'd pay money to see this pair on tour.
Enough hero worship for Yates already. I loved watching him ride also. He was a great descender and time trialist, and a blatant doper in my opinion. Watching he and Hincapie lead out Armstrong on Alpe d' Huez dropping lesser doped but superior climbers on the earlier pitches is when I started to question every performance and result. Takes a little bit of the joy out of watching my favorite sport. Cheaters suck!

@@nelsonhibbert5267 any year he rode with Lance, 91-96. I know, Lance didn't win the tour those years. Yates positive sample in "88, the fact that he worked for the "dirtiest" teams in cycling (Postal, CSC, Astana, Tinkoff and yes, Sky - all teams with highly suspect or admitted/proven cheats suggests Yates was in the know and on the special sauce. He was a favorite of mine at the time but his refusal to come clean, as Hincapie has, leaves a sour taste. I've actually talked to a member of that postal team and he assured me they were all on the juice - as most have admitted.

What a rider, I had his posters on my wall as a kid. Cycling back then just had that bit more panache than today's racing. But maybe that's just me thinking that.
