      The Isle of Man has a temperate climate that rarely drops to freezing and has never been hotter than 29.5⁰C (85⁰F). It's a fantastic strawberry-growing climate.

    Absolutely lovely to see your garden in bloom! I must say that i have a ton of strawberries and raspberries this year but my beans won't grow. I blame the much amount of rain. I,m actually thinking about a small greenhouse for the beans. They're butterbeans, don't know if you know them but here they're very hard to get them fresh. They're mostly in jars and that destroyes the taste to my opinion. But, i won't give up! Oh and my Jonagold apples are blooming away :D Finally little apples are showing. That makes me happy :)

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A tip for your beans - put the seeds in a tupperware covered by a damp paper towel. When they sprout, pop the seeds individually into pots filled with potting mix. Grow them on until they're a few inches tall before planting out. Hopefully, it's drier by that time, and you can bypass any issues with slugs, snails, or rodents eating the seeds. I'm doing exactly this right now with mine!

    I am trying to grow straw berries in the Caribbean and I said to myself that if you guys who live in cooler areas and need to put out in the sun that I needed to do the opposite if I am in the heated tropics (planted mines in the shaded areas of my garden) ….. but I find they aren’t doing great I have to try your tips and see if I make a difference! Wonderful video and great information! We have our first harvest of strawberries this year from 2 plants. We have so many ants in the soil of the strawberries. They seem to love them in particular over the other things in our raised bed garden. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with ants?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't worry about the ants... They won't harm the plants or eat the berries. If you really want them to move on, water the bed more often. They only like living in dryish soil.

    Great video and very informative. This is my first year planting everbearing strawberries. I was told the first year won’t grow strawberries but the second year will. With that said, will I not see any berries or runners this year? When will I start seeing strawberries? I’m anxiously waiting 😀. Thank you

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the variety! When I first planted Pineberries (everbearing), many years ago, I was disappointed that I had no berries the first year. After that, they were prolific. This year, I planted new overbearing strawberries in the pallet planter, and as you can see, we have berries 🍓

    I have berries in a raised bed. Just when I decided to take the berries the next day, something else beat me to it. I used a netting such as yours. How do I prevent the little thief from getting in? Any ideas? Should the netting go over the bed tops and anchor them down? Ideas would be appreciated. Thank you ❤

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could be rodents getting under the netting? I'd advise setting up the netting as I do in the video. Hoops or supports, tightly stretched netting, and well-secured at the bottom.

    Hi there, first time strawberry growing and I have a question…
    I made your planter and it has ever bearing variety (Cambridge) and I got them bare rooted this year, they are putting out runners and I’m not sure whether to make new plants or cut them off as it’s their first year?
    Advice please …. I love strawberries 🍓🍓🍓🍓

    My first strawberries are probably about 2 weeks ago yet. I have just picked the first 'Merton Glory' cherries, but those are in my polytunnel. This lower than average cool weather in June is holding back the ripening time a bit?

    • @Lovelygreens

      If this happened to me, I'd remove the worst of the leaves encircle each plant in a wide, 1/2" thick band of aged manure, and keep on top of watering. I think they'd spring back.

    I don't get much out of my strawberries. I have come to accept that they just don't do well in our hot climate and with the weather changing the way it has the past couple of years, I probably won't get any more out of them than I do now. If anything, I will get less, maybe none. This week, Cyprus had its first days above 45 degrees Celsius! It is only June, but we are getting August temperatures. We have seen these unpredictable temperatures more and more in the last few years. We will have to be flexible and adapt and change, if we want to harvest anything, in the coming years.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Did you know that most of the UK's winter strawberries are grown in Egypt? California is also arid and hot, yet most of the strawberries grown in the United States are grown there. If you want to have another go, you may want to consider changing the way you grow strawberries - varieties, irrigation, and soil. Also, strawberries are less productive after their third growing season. If yours are older than three years, use the runners to make new plants, then replace them with the new ones.

    Heeey Tanya, I live in Netherlands, zone 9b but it's quite similar here than there. You know what I am using as mulch? Hennep/hemp bedding for horses. It's eco, contains no seeds, top is dry quick and bottom protect soil from drying out for days or weeks sometimes. And, they are easy to decompost, I usually mix it into the soil after the season and after that in the spring I spread layer of new soul and mulch it again. Have done it 2 seasons like that and I can't tell you how easy it is. I do have also chickens and quails so it's 3 usages in 1 space. From all mulches hennep/hemp is the best for me. I am using it also in pots and also in hanging baskets and strawberries..
    (Edited) And because it do dry out quicker at the top, slugs don't like it very much. Maybe you can try it in 1 bed. I ain't going back to different mulch 😅

    Hello T L G . The Isle of Man must be like a different country to Yorkshire where i live weatherwise . This Spring and Summer so far has been the wettest ,coldest , with the least amount of sunshine ever and no sign for better in the forecast . Nothing is growing in my little South facing garden . My Tomato plants are about 10 inches high Strawberries. Zilch. and my 3 Blueberry plants have died. either drown or froze to death i think . Thats the British summer for you . Pfft!!. Huff!!!!

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's apparently been the hottest May on record here, but it doesn't feel like that. It's been a mixed bag of wet and cold nights but enough sun to get the garden going. Let's hope for better weather for all of Britain for the rest of the year 🙏

    Mine aren't very sweet. I have several varieties and the plants are big and healthy. Is there a secret to sweeten up the berries? I read to withhold water for a day or 2 before picking but that didn't seem to help. Love your vlogs😊

    • @mikeybyrne5806
      @mikeybyrne5806 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Maybe pick them a little later? Allow them to ripen a day or two more?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Berries that are unripe or that ripen out of the sun tend to be less sweet. Are your plants in a full-sun aspect? Has the weather been dull? Are the berries shaded too much by leaves and other plants?
