As a female, I have watched many lessons on stoicism. Helps me to contain myself and not allow mistreatment and stand my own ground. I am still in my feminine, but I won’t tolerate bs or be controlled by others.

@Carimars You're absolutely right. The common misconception that Stoicism is more male-oriented likely stems from the historical prominence of male Stoic philosophers. But as you've noticed, Stoicism itself doesn't prescribe to any gender. It's a philosophy that anyone can adopt.

What resonated with me was the fact that women are always being told to think of other people first. I did that all my life - till the last couple of years when I decided I needed boundaries. Some people have gone from my life now that I am less willing to allow others to dictate. Others have entered my life that respect me more. Only a couple stayed with me and we have a more balanced friendship now.

It's impressive how you've reshaped your relationships by being true to yourself. Which Stoic teaching or figure inspired you in this process? How do you balance kindness towards others with your own boundaries? Your insights could be invaluable to others facing similar challenges.

@@stoicbond Seneca is my favourite stoic. I am reading "letters from a Stoic" which is very inspirational for me.
I balance kindness and compassion by allowing others to make their own decisions -even if their decision is to not value their friendship with you.
Seneca advises to judge a person before committing to a friendship. A bit like marriage I suppose- you don't pick the first one you come across.
I do not cut people out of my life. It's more allowing them to decide their own path and not clinging to something that may mean more to me than it does to them.
By not clinging you open up to new possibilities and new friends that may value you more.

I think the "do not care" part of stoicism applies to the powerful men who wrote down their approaches to life. But in fact, a world without caring people will END.

    • @gernainelouisethomas945
      @gernainelouisethomas945 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

@@LoveOneAnotherHeSaidYou are completely missing the point. Stoicism does not mean you don't care. It means you care enough about yourself to not be controlled by others. If you don't set boundaries people will take advantage. I know because it has happened my whole life. Oh it's okay it's only here is their approach. The moment you say actually no, they get offended. Stoicism is not about having zero emotion, but about learning to control them instead of controlling other people. People who control others have zero self control.

It's unfortunate that many of us tend to learn these things later in life: the importance of self-respect and self-love (because others will mirror back to us how we perceive ourselves). Givers have limits, but there is no limit to those who only take. This is why the most giving and open-hearted grow resentful, but it's primarily a call to respect oneself enough to set necessary boundaries - even on our giving. Balance is key, as you have acknowledged. Your comment resonates.

In that time I've also endured and politely accepted the dislike of a few others for staying true to myself. @@stoicbond hi! Well stoicism was influenced by many philosophers, one being Socrates. Socrates credits philosophers Aspasia and Diotima as his instructors and teachers. I believe many don’t know this. Female philosophers existed, just like female artists, and rulers existed in history but they are suppressed and not given the recognition men have. This creates the idea that stoicism is this male discipline when it is not. There needs to be greater exposure to female philosophers because it is not that women are not capable of this discipline they simply were not given the attention men were, and mankind has a history of misogyny and ignorance, and that still didn’t stop women’s ability to create, invent, rule, and be philosophers. It is frustratingly hard to find these women but they exist.
The aspects of stoicism that could foster inclusive community is the incessant repetition of stoicisms relation to emotion. This particular aspect is what made me curious with stoicism, I met men that would call themselves stoic when they did insensitive things, they summarized to be stoic is to be void and suppress emotion. I thought how could philosophers create such beliefs? Having learned myself stoicism is not to be void or the suppression of emotion rather the extreme control of one’s emotions(among other principles). I believe this is where men try to take ownership of stoicism. If men believe in stoic principles they need to learn those are principles influenced by female philosophers like aspasia and diotima. I wrote a paper on the art piece “Aspasia surrounded by Greek philosophers”. Stoicism is not a male philosophy, it is a philosophy for anyone with emotion and life.

Men are fully aware of women already. They take us as we present ourselves and almost always respect any woman who is quietly strong, has healthy boundaries that rarely need explaining, understands that negotiating and compromise are how growth happens in relationships, is capable of beast mode but uses humility as her guide.

I stumbled upon stoicism a few days ago and discovered that I'm a stoic. I guess I naturally have a high EQ and have always been calm under pressure ever since I was a child. I believe I further developed my stoicism seeking personal growth following my divorce. My friends were amazed at how I handled my ex-husband cheating on me. I confronted them both (him and his mistress) in a calm state and walked away when I felt I needed to. I gave myself 3 months to process my emotions and told myself that by the 3rd month, I would let go of everything and I did. I then fully prioritized my inner peace. That was 8 years ago. I am currently in a relationship (5 years and counting) and boundaries were clear and set from the onset. I am no longer looking at relationships from an idealistic point of view but cherish it one day at a time.

For a stoic woman, we don't sleep around. We know it's an inner power depleter. WE DO NOT DRINK. we don't like 'things' that control ourselves, like cigarettes or pills or food. Anything that depletes our common sense and makes money for someone else, AND causes health problems. We do not want to take a mate that does not have self-control. When overcoming, keep your legs crossed, and life will give you clear thinking. People's opinions do not matter when we know we have power in our spiritual guide to lead us on from there. But life will not get better if one loosely gives One's sexual energy away. CELIBACY IS A BIG PART OF A STOICS' life. Start with that, and see if you are stoic material. This isn't about religion. This is a normal lifestyle. We have been greatly misled. Someone will comment that I'm not making sense. That's because I have upset them and their guile behavior. We know what you're worth, you do too.

@spurginajeter, thanks for your insight on self-control in Stoicism. Stoicism indeed values mastery over desires, but it's worth noting that it primarily focuses on internal virtues and rational judgment. Choices like celibacy can be a personal expression of discipline, but they are not a strict requirement of Stoicism.
Here's a thought: How can modern Stoicism accommodate diverse lifestyles while upholding its core principles? This question explores the adaptability of Stoicism in contemporary life, recognizing the varied ways people might apply its teachings.

Celibacy keeps me grounded. Frankly nobody lives as happily alone (in nature so never alone) as I do, yet I am unhappy with 24/7 noise, anxieties, emotional waverings, and interruptions of others.
My body of an age that no longer seeks what fertility of youth seeks. (Talking Darwin here).
I have had sex at 62 where I integrated with all the forms of life in the world, (my partner did not) so more isn't better. My soul seeks and knows serenity. I seek this bond with the All in other, quiet ways. And find it. @@stoicbond

@@stoicbond I would say there are a few key takeaways that have helped me the most. The number one takeaway was staying calm and if I had trouble staying calm, I would politely excuse myself from the situation. Stoicism teaches us that we have no control over anything outside of ourselves. We take our personal power back by not reacting to outside situations in an emotional way.
Another key takeaway that helped immensely is the value of knowledge. I am not just speaking of intellectual knowledge, but wise and spiritual knowledge. I found that even if I didn't particularly like someone or vice versa, we could still learn from each other. If you are in a position to learn new knowledge within an industry take it. Even if it is being taught by someone you don't like. I found that my biggest agitators in the industry became my dearest colleagues and some of them, friends. It was all because I latched onto tangible facts, also known as objective data. I didn't let my emotions cloud my judgement which is known as subjective data (data based on opinions, beliefs, and emotions). I decided my thirst for success in life was more important than voicing how I felt.
As women, we are nurturers full of strength! We have been told that we are full of weakness but that is only because of emotions left unchecked. We've been around that woman who gossiped a lot, was way too competitive, and all around toxic! This is what people see us as when we don't lift each up and encourage one another's potential. I have been around women who have tried to compete with me in my industry. It never works out for them. The men in our industry value strength, poise, mental resilience, and above all, respect. If you as a woman embody these values, the stoic mindset will guide you into true success and fulfillment.

Nothing in stoicism or psychology can prepare you for the outright OUT-OF-CONTROL psychopathic/sociopathic narcissist rampaging at you because you consistently evade their deliberate attempts to control.... the only thing keeping them at bay is the terror of being held legally accountable.... they're terrified of my lawyers....so they remain just inside the shadows, circling like sharks, waiting & watching for anything they think might present the opportunity they're looking for...
I know all the clinical definitions of what I'm squared off at... the legal boundaries they dance on the razor's edge of... But in the end, _Actually BEING a functional representation of a successful stoic woman living independently makes men insecure & other women jealous....& those with psychiatric issues explode into a rage, the likes of which you've never seen!!!_ THERE IS, IN THIS DAY & AGE, A DISTINCT NEANDERTHAL REACTION TO BEING THE WOMAN CAPABLE OF SUCCESS & DOING IT INDEPENDENTLY & WITHIN A STOIC FRAME... this reality is NOT discussed ANYWHERE, but it SHOULD BE... Any woman who walks THIS way BETTER HAVE RHINO HIDE & GRANITE CONVICTIONS.... because you're gonna need them to weather the onslaught of storms coming....⚡💜

I wouldn’t say that stoicism is necessarily male or female, but men throughout history held more worth than women. It’s neither good nor bad, It just is. So it’d make sense the majority of stoic teachings are from life recounts of men, it’s understandable that the majority of mens word would stand the test of time. However, let’s look at what stoicism has taught us from a base level. Be in tune with your emotions, be a good human being, surround yourself with positive people, and to be kind to yourself while also being stern, and many more. All of the teachings don’t hold any bearing on man or women in particular, some teachings may reason are better with one or the other. But what it does teach us is how to be stronger.

      @stoicbond  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@cheezyllamba You've made an insightful observation about the historical context of Stoicism and its teachings. Indeed, the predominance of male voices in early Stoic literature reflects the social structures of the time, but the core principles of Stoicism are universally applicable, transcending gender and time.
Your summary of Stoic teachings - being in tune with emotions, practicing kindness, surrounding oneself with positivity, and fostering inner strength - highlights the universal appeal of this philosophy. It's about personal growth and resilience, which are relevant to everyone.
Considering this, how do you think modern interpretations of Stoicism can continue to evolve to reflect the diverse experiences of both men and women in today's society? Your perspective adds valuable depth to this discussion! 🌟

Our men don't even know how to claim their own God given gift as men to us. I like the point about knowing when to lend a loving hand and when to uphold your boundaries. This resonating with my feeling that I always have to help if I am able, but also that not all people are open to assistance and when to recognize the difference. Also the point on amor fati resonated. Feeling shame or guilt about what has transpired in certain situations. It’s important to have self responsibility for your part but also learn and move on, see it as a gift, don’t keep beating a dead horse and thereby self shaming. ❤ enjoyed the perspectives shared 😊thank you

Recently I've realised how much of my suffering has come by distraction/coping/avoidance of facing my realities including fantasising and escapism. My intention for the year is to make my reality better than my fantasy by simply embracing each moment and circumstance as it is, instead of comparing myself to what I had envisioned would be my life by now.
Already with this intention im feeling the beauty of my life and each moment, because i am now less resistent to what is.

Well by nature I am an empath, I feel others feelings and emotions and I always get the short end of the stick. I had to learn to just say no. When I did it's so liberating! Being mindful of the parts I play in challenging situations. Be self aware of my expressions on my face cause I wear my emotions. That's where staying calm, meditation, yoga and journaling comes in for me. I have lost 40lbs. and still going. I also need to work on my self discipline again. For some reason it's harder than it was when I was younger. Any advice? Thx in adv. #grateful

@ramonatang5864, congratulations on your personal growth and the incredible journey you've embarked on! Your transformation, particularly in setting boundaries and being more self-aware, is commendable. It's inspiring to hear how integrating Stoicism with practices like meditation, yoga, and journaling has brought such positive changes in your life, including your impressive weight loss.
Regarding self-discipline, it's not uncommon to find it more challenging as we grow older. Life gets more complex, and our responsibilities increase. A Stoic approach would suggest focusing on what's within your control and breaking down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Remember, consistency is key, even in small steps.
Also, consider reflecting on your values and priorities now compared to when you were younger. Aligning your daily actions with these can reignite your motivation for self-discipline. Your journey is a testament to the power of a Stoic mindset combined with personal care strategies. Keep up the amazing work, and stay strong on this path of self-improvement.

The lessons that resonated most with me is Amor Fati, Balancing Emotional Labor and Authentic Leadership.
I had a very rigid view of what my life ought to be so when I met with setbacks, I took it hard. I saw this interview of a favorite artist of mine and she said she always felt like she was where she needed to be despite all the setbacks. Life is beautiful if we give it a chance.
For teamwork, I get so discouraged when things are not done up the way I expected it to, and I feel this pressure but I think it’s cause I have this flawed and narrow view of how it ought to look like but I want to practice a more compassionate and inspiring kind of leadership without taking on so much emotional baggage.

I think it's been a great way to bring peace between the difference in the 2 sexes. Certainty has helped my relationship with my man a great deal because I can rationalize my emotions, which enables me to properly, peacefully communicate with him instead of letting myself feel like a victim and becoming bitchy, dragging everyone down with me. Managing my emotions I think also helps with my unborn baby because I'm not stressing the two of us out!

@@stoicbond I think the one about parents expecting you to stick with a traditional job . I don’t do boring because I’m not a boring girl . I’m also not a traditional girl I’m my own unique person. Never let anyone tell me how to live my life . I smiled when I watched this video .

I really appreciate this video, and repeat viewings are worthwhile. As each day brings different challenges and blessings, or blessings as challenges, the lessons here continue to resonate. One day, stoicism in leadership hits home; another day it's self-awareness, introspection, and reflection. There is a lot here to process and it's all valuable.

I have read the journals of Marcus Aurelius and they really did change my way of thinking. I thought I’d just be learning a new philosophy in stoicism- but I obtained a new way of life ❤
