    Finally a real review, being honest and not just trying to sell them to me or make a pretty unboxing video. Thank you. Im probably going to get these and save up for the M50x.

    I have a pair because I needed a cheap, knock around pair of closed back headphones. Are they great? No. Do I like them for what I paid? Yes. Are they stupidly reliable and still going despite a total beating? Yes.

      That sums it up!

    I have a pair that I use them for everyday use on my pc along with gaming. I received these as a gift in 2017 as a Christmas gift, I thought it was a good choice at the time. I was thinking of upgrading to a newer model but wasn't sure. Is an upgrade necessary or is what I have good enough?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For everyday use and gaming, if you like their sound profile and find them comfortable, I wouldn't be in a hurry to upgrade. On the other hand, there are a lot of options that are built for greater comfort (especially for longer listening sessions) imo. If you plan on using them for music or video production, there are options that will make critical listening easier. Headphones are the kind of gear you can have for a long time (replacing ear pads on expensive headphones is often the way to go). I generally only recommend changing if your listening preferences have changed, you are looking for greater comfort, or your needs have changed.

    Hi! I'm going to get one for audio mixing in home studio. I'm looking for something cheap but the flatest frequency response possible. I'm between the ath-m30x and the Sennheiser HD206. I'd love a review about the 206s, but at least, versus the m30x, what do you say? Or do you recommend another one? Thank you so much! Great videos!

      I would say go with the M30x cause the 206HD aren't good at soundstage there isn't much details you can find in 206HD i have been using them for years and switched to Audiotechnica and I can say, the tracks I make with M30x, sounds totally different than the sons that i made with HD206.
      Here are the difference:
      Made with M30x : 1) th-cam.com/video/urB5I66MqK0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7vacIMVdvf7PFAQj
      2) th-cam.com/video/XKhDVszeY4s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9lfTctPPARy0M3DV
      Made with Sennheiser HD 206 : 1) th-cam.com/video/xKAu5qz2xsc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=POq-m1KKZaJbRpT6
      2) th-cam.com/video/eYoWURaWSsA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4V_bzUHOdf4g1LtL
      Hope you can hear the difference in depth and details.

      My pleasure to help out and I agree, a de-esser applied in the 10-12kHz range would improve the tonal balance and also help reduce listening fatigue. The scoop could also be EQ'd, but the profile (and comfort) are not ideal.

      Glad you are enjoying my reviews. Sound is subjective as is performance for different musical genres. Two very underrated sets worth looking at are the OneOdio Monitor 60 (closed-back) and Monitor 80 (open-back). I reviewed both. I suggest listening to them in the reviews and then let me know which you prefer. Also, look for M40x on Black Friday sales, they are a very good option.

    🙏 Since You mentioned that the M30x isn't very suitable for voice overs , I'd like to know which one of these headsets is best for voice over beginners: M20x, HD280 pro or MDR 7506 ? I look forward to your reply and keep up the good work ! 😊

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Glad to help out! The HD280 pro are a good choice for voiceover. They provide good isolation while recording and deliver response across the vocal range that translates well to a variety of playback devices. If you prefer a brighter sound, the 7506 are also popular, but you have to be aware of the emphasized higher frequencies when processing the audio for intelligibility and sibilance so as not to over “de-ess” your recordings.

    I've found the M30 are ok for amateur vocal recording but not good for mixing/mastering. They lack low end and I feel like they compromised the range to reduce bleed out for recording. Mine softened and the bleed is minimal. It's an easy "Wilbury".

    This was the first video of yours I watched and thought that you could help me genuinely.
    AKG K 240 or Sony MDr-7506 or AudioTechnica ATH M30X or Sennheiser HD 280 Pro
    All the above mentioned headphones in India comes under the same price range.
    What would be your best pick for Mastering purpose from the above or have you got any other better option in and around that budget.
    AKG K 240 is semi open back, I don't know how much sound would leak out.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad to help out! The AKG K240 will be the most accurate and provide the best overall frequency response for mastering on your list. They will leak some sound, but for mastering this should not be an issue unless you are working in a shared space or would also like to use them for tracking. If you need a closed back so as not to leak sound, the M40x would be my choice closest to this price range. A bit more than the M30x, but definitely worth it. Masters that sound finished on either the K240 or M40x translate well to other playback devices in my experience. I hope this helps out!

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For monitoring purposes, the closed-back M30x will help to avoid mic bleed, but for post production use, to my ears the 240 provides a more neutral response to evaluate your recordings and apply effects. If you prefer one set for everything, I would recommend checking out the M40x. I know they are more expensive (check for sales), but they are great choice for both recording and post production. When spoken word sounds “right” on the M40x, it translates well to almost any playback device. I hope this helps out!

      The M40x and K240 are more neutral/linear. When you get your K240s give them a good 24 hours of playback with dynamic program material at a medium-high level, it makes a considerable difference in the dynamic performance, clarity, and lower frequency response on these headphones. Hope you enjoy your new K240s!

      I would check out the M40x, AKG K240 MKii, Shure SRH-1840, and the OneOdio Monitor 80 reviews. Across a wide price range, these all provide a natural sound without considerably overemphasizing bass, mids, or highs.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For mixing and mastering, the HD280 pro and MDR 7506 are both great choices from your list. The 7506 have a slight edge in clarity while the HD 280 will provide a bit more detail in low frequencies for bass heavy genres. If you can go open-backed, I would recommend the AKG k240 studio (or mkii) as they provide superior imaging / soundstage compared to the closed-back models in this price range. All three of the headphones can be used to create mixes that translate very well to a variety of playback devices. I hope this helps out!

    Hi! I'm going to get one for audio monitoring. Now ath-m40x and m60x are on the table but still couldn't choose one! What would you more prefer?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi and thanks for the question! It somewhat depends on the genres you will be listening to. The M60x offer improved bass dynamics vs the 30 and 40 which is helpful when listening for timing in the low end for genres such as EDM and Hip Hop, but the 40s are overall more neutral / accurate which is helpful for mixing. Bass on the 40s is not as detailed as on the 60s, but is sufficient for most applications. The over represented mids and high on the 60s can make it difficult to make accurate mix decisions. Comfort on the 60s is the best, but I wouldn't say the 40s are uncomfortable. I generally don't recommend the 30s for extended use times due to poor comfort and the under emphasis of some frequencies creates a somewhat scooped sound to my ears. Overall, best performance / flexibility to value is the 40s, but the 60s do have an edge for bass heavy content. I hope this helps out!

    Great explaination. I just have few questions, Is sony mdr7506 better than m30x? (it also comes in the same budget range).
    I am confused on which one to buy:
    sony 7506, Sennheiser hd280 pro, M40X or any other pair? Please help me to choose the best one within this budget range.
    I want it for mixing/mastering beats and also casual music listening.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In your case, my choice from your options that will provide accurate reproduction for mixing/mastering while still producing a good casual listening experience are the M40x. Both the 7506 and hd280 pro a relatively accurate, but I find them fatiguing for casual listening. The M30x are not accurate enough for mixing (it will be challenging to create mixes that translate well) and they are not very comfortable for longer listening sessions. The M40x are imo an ideal balance for the use cases you are looking for. Hope this helps out!

    Hi, I know this video is 1 year ago, I hope you still reply to this, so I'm completely new to audio mixing, and looking to mix solo piano music generated by Midi and VSTs, a friend of mine recommended me the M 30X, and M 50X, but I see here on the comment sections you advocate for M 40X more than the m30, mind sharing your insight on the m50x? Or maybe other headphones you think would be great for mixing classical solo piano music? Because I write music like Phillip Glass(if you heard of him), so a lot of repeating rhythms if that helps.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the question and details about what you are doing. I prefer headphones with a natural sound profile and good imaging performance. Since the piano is able to produce a wide range of frequencies, hearing everything in balance will help you make good mix decisions. The M50x will work well for piano. Some find they have emphasized bass and recessed mids, but it is more their bass and sub-bass extension that can give that impression more than the midrange response actually being repressed. The M40x provide less low end extension and for that reason can sound more balanced, particularly for those hose hearing is sensitive to low frequencies. Classical piano will also benefit from open-back headphones such as the Sennheiser HD600 / 650, AKG K702 (review coming soon), and the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohm (as long as you ears are not overly sensitive to high frequencies). In a more affordable price point, the OneOdio Monitor 80 open-back headphones perform far above their price and are also excellent for piano. I hope this helps out!

      The M40x is more accurate in the midrange vs the M30x. The 30's sound a bit scooped on spoken word by comparison. If you mostly listen to spoken word, I would recommend the 40's. Besides accuracy, I also find them less fatiguing for lengthy sessions (podcasts, audio books, etc.) Hope this helps out and I'm glad you enjoyed my reviews!

      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sonarworks will provide a more neutral response from the m30x. You may find the earpads a bit stiff / uncomfortable for long sessions, but the m30x is a good place to start. If there isn't too much difference in price, I would recommend going with the m40x. They offer some of the best performance value available, are more neutral vs the m30x, and the comfort / build quality is a significant improvement, but again, the m30x are a good option to get started. The majority of the rest of us buy these to listen to music and enjoyment, and not for music production or podcast or critical listening. So, this review along with 99% of other reviewers only talks about how good headphones are for "music production, mixing, recoding". We don't care about those, some do, but the rest of us don't because we buy these to listen to music and gaming at home so that we don't disturb other family members or rock your apartment neighbors. How good are these for "music enjoyment" and or "gaming"? and for music enjoyment, yes, talk about if these are good for EDM, rock, vocal (female and male), string, classic.

    What is log?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question! Log (or logarithmic) is a type of mathematical representation of data. For audio, looking at frequency response (data) in a log format provides a better representation of "how we hear sound" vs looking at linear frequency response. This in part explains why we hear things differently compared to the linear frequency response quoted for audio gear. For example, we are sometimes told a set of headphones are flat, but when we listen to them it sound like there is too much bass. I use log for headphone response to help provide an idea of coloration the headphones will impart (more bass, mids, highs, etc.) so you know what it expect if you are thinking about purchasing them.
