Steven Spielberg saw Basic Instinct, and liked Wayne Knight so much that he picked his name from the credits. He was the first actor cast for Jurassic Park.

Wow so awesome that u chose Basic Instinct to react to! This is one of the defining movies of the 90's yet somehow forgotten by YT movie reviewers. I'm halfway thru and i can tell you're enjoying this masterpiece, Catherine Tramell is the best written screen femme fatale, The movie is to be watched for its plot but also the incredible scenery, score, cinematography, script, throwback to classic film noirs, and the steamy and violent scenes, which Verhoeven definitely brings from the less "censored" European film school. Thanks Shree!

And the US theatrical cut was less violent and had less sex compared to European cut. These days I think Americans only watch the fully uncut version available on Blu-ray etc...

It's the level below of sex thriller... Wild things is a good little movie, Cruel intentions a teenage movie which try to be sulfurous. May I recommend to you some italian's giallo of the 70's ? Torso, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin or The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Or som Brian de Palma's movies like Dressed to Kill or Body double.

Before the movie "Paul Verhoeven make something different this time"
After the first scene : "Ok ! It's the old same Paul Verhoeven..."
If he mostly know for his action movies, Paul Verhoeven maked a more different kind of movies en europe before Hollywood and still today. But always the same themes and graphics obsessions. "Basic instinct" can be see as a variation of his movie "The fourth man".
The end mean she don't kill him now, but when she will be tired of him, when there will be no more pleasure for her, he will die. Like with Johnny Boz and her ancient lovers. Murder and thrill are the top of the pleasure for her.

I've heard Sharon Stone was actually unaware of just how much was visible, here. When she found out, she was none too pleased about it.

The actress playing Roxy, Leilani Sarelle, was married to Miguel Ferrer, a fact that both Verhoeven and Michael Douglas found unbelievably funny on the DVD commentary, based on Miguel's personality.

Paul Verhoeven is a genius. All his movies are so well done, very often with a political message (not this one, pure psychology). His cinematography, the role of the music, the use of violence or sex 'always with a purpose) and his direction of the actors make him a master. After all, he s dutch, studied cinema in france (speaks french fluently) and you can feel this european touch in every movie. "; You have to watch "the invisible man".
"wild things" is a good one
"drive" with Ryan Gosling (danish diirector)
all the Sergio Leone, specially "once upon a time in the west"
Michael Man's movies: "Thief", "manhunter", "the last of the mohicans"
"Nikita" from Luc Besson (who did "Leon the professionnal"), more exotic
    "Amelie", a french tale.
    Thanks for you reaction

Before I begin: You may want to avoid Basic Instinct 2. It's not good. I mean... it's a major downgrade of a sequel.
    Some trivia:
    1. Paul Verhoeven, the director of the film, realized that he would be filming Basic Instinct in San Francisco, the same city as Vertigo, which BI also had a similar premise. So, he decided to lean into the Vertigo reference by having Catherine's iconic white dress and hair style mimic Kim Novak's outfit from Vertigo.
    2. Joe Eszterhas wrote the script in ten days in the 1980s while listening to The Rolling Stones non-stop without even having a story outline. He also incorporated a few of the songs into the script (the opening scene was set to "Sympathy for the Devil", while the dance scene in the club was set to "Gimme Shelter").
    3. Sharon Stone's infamous leg-uncrossing scene was not in Joe Eszterhas' original script. It was thought up by Paul Verhoeven while the movie was being shot. It was based on a memory of Verhoeven's college years, when a woman at a party had done the exact same thing to embarrass him. A funny aspect of the scene is that when they watched it, some people believed they could see all of her down there, while others state all they see are the inside of her legs.
    4. The LGBQT community that resided in San Francisco was not happy with the script and Hollywood filming another movie that portrays lesbians and bisexuals as killers. The formed a small activist/consultant group that tried to get the script changed (suggesting that they genderflip the hero and villain, making the cop a woman and the villain a male). However, Verhoeven wouldn't allow for that. As a result, the activists would form protests outside filming locations to try to ruin shooting. They even had signs that read "Honk if you like the 49ers" outside of locations to get people to blow their car horns as they drove by. They even renamed their consultant group as "Catherine Did It" to spoil the ending.
    5. No body doubles were used for the sex scenes.
    6. Joe Eszterhas based Catherine Tramell on a go go dancer he knew in Ohio, back when he was a newspaper reporter. One night he picked up the stranger and they went back to his hotel room to have some fun. "She reached into her purse, and she pulled out a .22 and pointed it at me," he told Nerve. "She said, 'Give me one reason why I shouldn't pull this trigger.' I said, 'I didn't do anything to hurt you. You wanted to come here, and as far as I know, you enjoyed what we just did.' And she said, 'But this is all guys have ever wanted to do with me, and I'm tired of it.' We had a lengthy discussion before she put that gun down."
    7. Catherine's car is a 1991 Lotus Esprit SE (Type 85). The border around the license plate advertises Ron Greenspan, a dealer out of San Francisco that supplied the cars to be used in the film.
    8. The club featured in the film features a church theme. This club's design was modeled after a real dance club that existed. The club was called the Limelight, it was chain of nightclubs owned and operated by Peter Gatien. It had locations in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, London and Hallandale, Florida. The one in New York City was the one that inspired the dance club seen in the film, as the one in New York was set up in a former Episcopal Church.
    9. This film was final film of Dorothy Malone, who played Hazel Dobkins.
    10. Paul Verhoeven considered this film to be the spiritual successor to one of his earlier films, The Fourth Man (1983).
    11. Linda Fiorentino was considered to play Beth. She would later play a major part in another erotic thriller written by Joe Eszterhas: Jade (1995), which was also set in San Francisco.
    12. Paul Verhoeven, who directed Total Recall (1990), offered the role to Sharon Stone mainly because he admired her performance in that film, where she played an evil character pretending to be innocent, even though reportedly 15 other actresses had turned it down at that point.
    13. Sharon Stone was nervous filming the first sex scene with Bill Cable (who played Johnny Bozz at the start of the film).

She doesn't care about him one bit. Otherwise she wouldn't even place that ice peak under the bed. She is just realized it was way too risky for her to kill him - no one left to blame. So that title was very fitting, cause Basic Instinct of any living being is TO SURVIVE... 😉

    • @xejelah
      @xejelah 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree she doesn't care about him, but not the reason. Roxy is gone, she was her ride or die. That wasn't planned. Kathrine doesn't have a new plaything and the fact he bought her BS even after offing his bestie and gf in one night means he could be the new replacement until she finds a new one. She doesn't want to get bored. Plus, her book isn't out yet and he could read the similarities while she screws with him some more.

Sharon Stone was an actress for a decade before she got her big break in Total Recall.
Basic Instinct that came two years later made her an international star.
Stone is quite the talented actress as her role in Casino shows. As for Douglas, you have to react to Fatal Attraction. This film deserves to be reacted to.
Sharon was quite angry at Vehoeven for the legs crossing scene.
He claims she knew, she denies it.
Thing is she knew she was without panties because her character says so and Verhoeven told her the white of the panties would show on the camera and it would make the claim by her character ridiculous so the panties had to come off.
I think she expected it would be implied, maybe by the angle of the camera showing the edge of it, while he saw it as permission for a full shot on the money.
Their different opinion on what happened may be different expectation of the same thing and miscommunication of the real intention of each before the shot.
Regardless, she admitted in the end that it was the right call but is still angry about it.
The film is described as a Hitchkockian neo-noir erotic thriller and that fits perfectly.
It is a great thriller and both Douglas and Stone are giving great performances.
Another great neo-noir movie of the 90's is LA Confidential. if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor and do watch it.

Every time I hear a cop in a movie threaten to "take this downtown," or something to that effect, I'm reminded of that scene in the film noir parody _The Cheap Detective_ from 1978.
Our hero (Lou Peckinpaw) is a private detective. There's a scene where he's being questioned in his apartment by local law enforcement. One of them ominously says, "...or do we need to take this downtown?"
    He replies, "We _are_ downtown."
The cop says, "Right." Then he looks around, considers the surroundings, and says, "This'll do."

Though you may not have seen many 'erotic thrillers' to compare it to, Basic Instinct is very much a dark satire of the subgenre. Most people take it at face value and don't see the humor in it 😅
Verhoeven's Showgirls, while much less subtle, kinda has the same feel - a dark overly-eroticized tale (if you try to make a cut for YT, there is an 'edited for TV' version out there with a lot of the nudity cgi'd over)
Some erotic thrillers to check out - Sliver, with Sharon Stone, and Fatal Attraction, with Michael Douglas
