One minor correction needed. On run blocking resolution, according to the 5th ed. rules, when it’s a player vs player situation, the blocking and tackling values are compared. If the result is positive (run blocker’s value was greater than the defender’s tackle value) then the blocker’s full block value is added to the total yardage gained . So, in the case you demo’d, three yards would be added to the run, not just one yard. (See p.2 , para 2 of 5th ed. rules) That said, nice video! Glad to see SPF getting some love. Have owned and played for 30 years. Still loving it.
Thanks, Rob. I did miss that from the actual rules. I had been playing the comparison as a house rule for years (just to show the effect of the battle) that I forgot about the actual rule! Whoops.
Played this game in my youth with my brothers and some friends. We always played it the way he does in the video despite the rules. We thought it made more sense. We actually played it that way for years and one day I was going through the rules for some reason and noticed that we were either doing it wrong or the rule changed somewhere over the years. Either way, we continued to take the difference instead of the whole for the highest player.
You did a great job describing the play of this game. I owned this game many years ago, as well as Paydirt and Bowl Bound from Avalon Hill. However, early on, I realized that there were not enough play varieties. An NFL Team will use upwards of 25-30 different plays in a game on offense and 15-20 different plays on defense from a playbook of many more options. What did I do? I made my own NFL Game--A version of 1940-1959, 1960-1979, 1980-1999, and now 2000-2017. I have 24 offensive and 16 defensive plays for each team, plus special plays like QB Sneak, Reverse, Running Back Pass, Flea Flicker, and QB Boot Run, and Goalline, Sideline Prevent, and Prevent. I took the best season in each era for every franchise (using computer power ratings) that played during each era, for instance for the Browns, I took the 1953, 1964, 1987, and 2000 teams (2000 is the Baltimore Ravens).
Thank you for that video, brought back memories when I played in a league (only 2 seasons) 30+ years ago. We played the 1983 and 84 cards. There were about 5 of us in the league and we had a draft with a regular season and playoffs and SB. I was the youngest in the league and won the SB in the 2nd year. LOL But, here's the interesting part, I won because of one crucial type of player. I looked through all the player cards of all the teams and noticed that a few RBs had zero yards even at a 12 (worst outcome), but there was ONE RB (forgot the name) that had 2 yards at 12 !! Even though this RB had a 3 for endurance, I would put him in just for short yardage, and let me tell you that was key in keeping drives alive and punching in the endzone. And, that year I also had the 1984 Miami Dolphin offense plus I drafted Marcus Allen as my RB1. That was so much fun.
Any idea how to determine which defensive player is credited for a sack when it occurs? Just dug this out of storage. Was trying to solitaire play the entire strike season from 1987. Got 10 weeks in playing all games from all teams when I was a kid.
My brother procured 'The formula ' to make teams. Had 3 seasons of All-Time League. Classic Conference.. Recent Conference '78 Cowboys 27 '90 Bill's 14 Time Bowl I '68 Colts 20 '95 Colts 17 Time Bowl II '01 Rams 42 '76 Vikings 13 Time Bowl III
Do you still have the formulas by any chance? Thank you and I realize that it's a long shot though. There are people that still make and sell the player cards and game components. It is a GREAT game. I love playing this game!
Ive got an oldee set of FAC with a 1980 edition. It doesnt have the defense section. And on most plays, rumning or passing, theres either 1 asterisks or 2, What do those asterisks mean?
Any thoughts on how the player's endurance comes into play? i guess if defense wants to contain a "0" workhorse type player they could key or double team often.
There are some people on eBay that sell some modern cards. If I could get the time, I'd love to put together some sets. Also, www.sycarion.com/statis-pro-football/ has cards up till the 2006 season.
@@nicksouth9770 Now, three years later, we're looking at digging a LOT deeper into our pockets if going to EBay, for example. It's now going for anywhere from about $130 to well north of $200 CAD, plus postage. I'm guessing that demographics and nostalgia are colliding in a rather expensive way. Today, for a game with the same degree of granularity, one of your better bets cost-wise is going to be Second Season, or ABC Game Company's Tabletop Football (essentially an enhanced Statis Pro Football). The ABC route is initially cheaper, but is completely print and play. So that means printing and material costs, plus a MASSIVE amount of time and sweat equity in cutting out well over 1,000 player cards.
I tried this game when I was younger and again a few years ago. Besides the enormous tabletop footprint, it just feels very clumsy. Some plays take flip after flip to get the result....
I LOVED Statis Pro Football!
Used to play this back in 84/85 and with my beloved dolphins. Magical Marino
Brings back good memories playing this in the 80s - it'd be nice to play it again!
Thanks for the efficient and enjoyable playthrough. Steve 🙂
Takes me straight back to my youth playing a simpler version of this game!

Many thanks. Great refresher for me as it's been a long time since I played the game and just got an old season's cards....

I guess you want a game to take 4 hours plus? Board game are not meant to reproduce EVERY single thing
@@stevep8445 Huh? The game takes the same amount of time to play as Bowlbound and Paydirt and has a lot more reality.
I enjoyed your explanation of the playthru. Thank you

This video is very good. I have watched it several times dunce I a new to this game.
Scorecard says Bengals, not Jets, I had to look up if Gastineau ever played anywhere else. Hahaha. Thanks for the vid!
I have the 1987 version of this, I played it as a kid in the UK.
Same , same, and same.
I had the earlier version in UK. Helped learning the intricacies of play calling in those early days.

Ive got an oldee set of FAC with a 1980 edition.

played 10 seasons one superbowl we had 20 owners
I had this exact game/season back in the late 80's. I liked it, but it was a little fiddly vs the baseball game.
Hey Nick, do you know where I get some of the charts, like the penalty chart and things like that? Thanks and love the game and video.
Wow, I have not seen this since 1982.
Any thoughts on how the player's endurance comes into play? i guess if defense wants to contain a "0" workhorse type player they could key or double team often.
thanks for doing this...do they sell anywhere with the modern cards?

Hey Nick,I just happen to be watching this video on SP football. Have u ever Dione anything on the Canadian Foorbal league game?
I just picked up the 1985 season and I am missing 1 card. Denver Bronco Center - Bryan. Does anyone have this season that can scan his card for me?
I will see if I can pull that.
I’ve got the 1986 Edition. Bill Bryan is rated +3 Blocks, and has a Pass Block rating of 1. Hope this helps.
thanks for doing this video excellent job thinking of buying the game
You are welcome. Luckily, the game was produced enough that getting a copy isn't too expensive, even 30 years on.

Interesting but I prefer Paydirt
