- How To Use A Fetal Doppler After 16 Weeks Pregnancy - Dr Gill
Using a fetal, Doppler seems like one of those very specialist skills. However, I would argue that being able to accurately, and reliably detect a fetal heart rate, and separate that from the maternal heart rate is a clinical skill that all practising doctors should be able to perform.
In almost all specialities, you will likely come across pregnant women in your care, and regardless of the medical issue for which you're seeing the mother. There, the majority of pregnant women will be more concerned about the unborn child. In those situations, being able to use a fetal, ultrasound probe is a fantastic tool to help a mother, even if it is merely a temporary measure, whilst you are arranging a specialist obstetric review for definitive reassurance
In this video, we address how you can use the fetal Doppler, in order to listen to a babies, heart sounds.
We highlight the reasons that you may want to listen to a fetal doppler, and highlight approaches to differentiating the maternal from fetal sounds
Here is the link to the BMJ article outlining the issues with patients utilising fetal dopplers at home

Please note that there is no ABSOLUTE way to perform a clinical examination. Different institutions and even clinicians will have differing degrees of variations - the aim is the effectively identify medically relevant signs.
However during OSCE assessments. Different medical schools, nursing colleges, and other health professional courses will have their own preferred approach to a clinical assessment - you should concentrate on THEIR marks schemes for your assessments.
The examination demonstrated here is derived from Macleod's Clinical Examination - a recognized standard textbook for clinical skills.

Hello to my favorite doctor who is not my doctor 😅
morning!
That baby is gonna be so spoiled by their parents' soothing voices
Fantastic video as always! Love Bethany trying not to laugh when you refer to "nobbly bits" at 11:43 😆
thankfully, she is used to me 😊
I'm a GP working as a family doctor in Brazil. Your videos are really well made and they help me review my medical skills, cheers Dr. Gill!
Thank you for that comment. Are there any other areas we could do that might help?
@@DrJamesGillLook at this guy. He’s giving us more than we deserve and STILL asked if there’s more he can offer.
It really helps. Learnt so much about the Doppler USS in obstetrics.
It would be nice if you could do a video on TVUS.
Took me back to my trainee midwife days. Usually I’m here for the ASMR but it’s nice to appreciate the actual clinical skills part for a change. And you’re both so cute together 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Big thank you to Mrs/Dr Elizabeth Gill for being on camera to share this!!
More than happy to share :) just trying not to giggle through the video so I look very grumpy! 🙈
I thought that was just the normal face?? 😉
@@bethp311Just wanted to tell you that your subscriptions are top notch lol 😅
hello my friend ,do you know some Chinese brand fetal doppler which is cheap and of high quality ?
24 weeks! Already past half way! So happy for both of you and that the baby and Dr. Beth are doing so well!! Hope you are doing amazing as well, father's health is just as important :)
Gotta say, you look awfully slim for 24 weeks pregnant, Dr. Gill.
I know. I think I’d doing very well, you can barely see my bump
I remember my doctor using the doppler on me quite a few times throughout my pregnancy and I found it amazing how clear you can hear baby's heartbeat on such a small device. I had HG throughout the entire 9 months, I thought it was normal morning sickness! Spent quite a bit of those 9 months in and out of hospital :( Would never wish HG on my worst enemy! Also it's adorable how proud you are already with this baby 🤣
HG is nasty. I’m sorry you had to go through that
do you know some Chinese brand household fetal dopper which is very convenient to be used at home ? 😁
So when Baby Gill is born, that starts Phase 2 of the Gill Cinematic Universe?
Or the world ends!
Ive never seen you so nervous. Well done for getting through that.
Wait, is that his wife and baby? How adorable!
Well proto baby. Fetus, or Baby in potentia
@DrJamesGill that was the most doctor reply you could've given
@@charliedear8802 ommmm
Yay! I just had my daughter two months ago. Enjoy parenthood both of you! I definitely used the doppler for peace of mind after a miscarriage. I had my OB show me how to use it correctly because those directions are nonsense 😂
So precious seeing parents hearing their own baby in this training video! ❤
For years of not only being a student but a viewer, I am so happy for both you. Again, congrats!!! Hopefully its a little Dr. J G
It's cool that we get to come along for a small part of the journey
So exciting! Another great clinical video. Also, so exciting for your family!
I’ve actually never seen this before. It changes the way you look at a pregnancy. For the better.
I’m curious what you mean by that?
Great informative video, Drs! It's so great to be able to see the bump grow and develop
I’ve been tempted as a pregnant medical student to get a Doppler for my own reassurance, but I haven’t learned how to use it yet and I really don’t want to mess it up. Best to leave it to my OB!
150 bpm!! that’s my heart rate after i’ve finished leg day at the gym.. 😅 what’s that baby doing in there!
Apparently yoga last night
My baby his heart rate from the first time to the end of pregnancy ranged from 145-160 the whole time
15th of August? Get ready people. Beth's birthday is coming and we should do our duty! Thank you for this really interesting video. Dr!
God bless to you both and your soon to be beautiful baby.
It's great to see that Dr Beth and baby Gill are both well. I hope you are too James.
Congratulations to you two ...and soon three! ❤
This is so cool!
Yay Congrats Doc!
Hello DR Gill..Good Luck With The New Child,Warm Regards...P.S...Do You Have Any Insight/ Knowledge On Dementia & What Is Your View On Care Homes In General,Do You Think They Give Longevity To A Life..is There Any Kind of Statistics That Say How Long Someone Stays/ Lives On Average Per Say In Said Establishment,,.All The Best ...Michael Paul Wheeler...
Ahh Congrats! Not even my baby and I smiled ☺️. Made me miss when my kiddos were at this stage
successful examination ❤
With my first son, they tried to check for the heartbeat with a Doppler when I was 10 weeks and it took them like 5 whole min to find it. They almost gave up and sent me back for an ultrasound instead. It was wildly stressful.
Greta video doc
Me wishing this came out when I was pregnant! Lol relatable ASMR
The only thing that bothers me is the phrase "we are pregnant", only she is pregnant! You are both having a baby and going to be parents. Otherwise, great video as always and congratulations 😊
Thank you Drs. This video will be extremely helpful in my work!
Glad it was helpful! What do you do for work?
I am a nurse in an obgyn clinic, but new to the specialty
As a very very experienced RN who has dealt with many doctors in the ob/gyn area ( personal experience as well, having been through 6 pregnancies), they are fairly antiqued. When I was trying to determine 47 yrs ago if i was pregnant with my son they wouldn't allow home pregnancy tests bc they felt it wouldn't be properly done ( trust me the tests were available but the knowledge of having the them available was not made available!) This doppler business that this doctor is endorsing is the same.
I’m not quite sure which point it is you are making here.
But I’m sure we both agree patient safety is paramount, and as a result the Doppler probe should not be used by untrained individuals, as highlighted in the video
So professional😀l !I like watching this type of video. We our company with many model of this protable fetal doppler baby heart monitor. With CE ,FDA certification.
I don't know how i fell out of here, i am going to subscribe again, technology 🙄. Dr gill your video's are amazing but do us a favour, could you show us how to work out the paediatric dose in ml, i have seen other videos and its so confusing, i am sure you have a simple way of doing it. Ages of 6 months to 12 years. Thanks
Great video, Doctors, educational (thinking of the doppler as a flashlight helps extremely), entertaining, and yes cute as well. Best wishes from Texas
Glad it was helpful!
This is Good 👍
Beth seems like a good sport.
Having never touched a pregnant belly... I had no idea it would be so squishy!
I went to one of my sister's prenatal appointments last year (she was 5 months pregnant iirc), and this was the 1st time I saw this small doppler machine in my whole life... I was really amazed at how you can listen to the baby's heart with such a small device
My nephew's heart was doing well at this appointment, he was born at February 3rd this year and he's so adorable 🥺💖 It's so wild to think he's turning 6 months old in a few days, he's growing up so fast 🤯
Wishing the best for both of you and for the baby, hope you both enjoy parenthood 💖
Coming back just to say that I just realised that Bethany is only a few days younger than my older sister, the same one I've mentioned in the 1st comment
My sister was born in August 4th 1991, Bethany was born in August 15th the same year... This is such a lovely coincidence 💖
Wishing Bethany a lovely birthday in advance, wishing her the best and wishing you both a lovely life with your baby 💖
I'm a twin and we were monoamniotic so I wonder how difficult that might have been for my moms doctor 😂
That would have been a headache without a visual Doppler
A great PSA not to go play doctor at home and possibly risk a baby.
thank you
Any double vision? Putabitofpapar on it.
well, she's currently got four eyes 😊
6 eyes. I'm growing his too!!
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
I find it hard to believe anyone knows which way the baby is lying without a scan. I was told at 39 weeks she was head down and she was breech. No way she moved around overnight. 😅
Our baby loved to moved when they would try to listen to their heart. It was like he knew that they were trying to get a reading of him. It would take a bit before they could get it and tell me where he was at.
Dr. Beth, since you’re an OBGYN, how did you go about choosing your OB? I assume you can’t/shouldn’t be your own prenatal care provider.
Not to answer for Beth, she will be able to add her personal take, but generally, in the UK, unless you are opting for private medicine, you don’t get to choose your specialist, you are allocated depending on the case
So a simple shoulder case would go in the general shoulder surgeon pool, but a case of a certain difficulty, would be discussed and a specific surgeon would likely be referred them
Does Beth have any involvement with the content of these videos considering it's actually her specialisation?
She certainly helps with the guideline reviews
G is the man
I'm going to tell my husband to call me his demonstrations haha
Bpm wooow here I thought tachycardia condition is off I need to lay off caffeine intake.
Good luck mommy and baby.
I only ever had the trans vaginal one in my pregnancy. Hope baby gets perfectly “baked” and delivered😊.
late to this but i do have a question. i know these things can give the wrong impression when people confuse the mother's heartbeat for the babies but wouldn't a normal adult pulse be too low for a baby and a babies pulse be too high for an adult?
Yes, however a very anxious mother could have a pulse of 150, which would be what you’d expect of a baby
The pulses SOUND different was well, but this is the point, there is a risk with non-trained people using them
God bless you and World nos cuidan y protegen de todo mal amen perdón gracias a los que amamos el mundo entero bendiciones por mas añitos aqui en la tierra y algun dia por la eternidad besos gracias con los que amamos el mundo entero bendiciones ❤️😍
Sick beats
An increased size of everything is a very dangerous sentence to say about your wife 😂
😂 I was thinking that same thing. 😂😂😂😂
She didn't look impressed, had a look of "For Christ's sake, can I go home now?" haha
Could you please list the name of the doppler or a link to the doppler?
As mentioned this is a device which only trained individuals should be using, and that training should enable access to these devices
@@DrJamesGill yes, just wanted to know the particular brand and maybe some insight as to what technical specs made you choose it. You presented on technique, perhaps the technology itself is considered universal enough to not matter.

Me stupidly grinning listening to this 😂
Yay!!!!
👍
Is it true that girl heartbeats are faster than boy heartbeats?
I highly doubt it
I've never been this early lol
Has Mrs Gill’s baby brain causes her to forget her age? She was born in 1996 in the last video 😀
All the people who assist in these videos are asked to use a fake DOB 😊

Damn Dr.Gill, that got deep real quick 😅 1:10
Unfortunately it’s true, and a hugely important warning for a video like this
@@DrJamesGill Completely agree. People should make it more known. Great video 👍
Hey, Dr James! Men, I got a lot of problems... Im addicted to pornography and I cant quit. Its overwhelmingly dificult to stop and its causing me back pains. Due to that, i developed lordosis past month. What do you suggest me to overcome this situation?
I can only suggest speak to your GP. Addiction is something people often are not willing to acknowledge.
You have done the first step, hopefully a health professional can help you continue the journey
15 August? Happy B_day🎉
