Nice hinest review. Goes to show that not all 'home fixes'go to plan. A pain you had to buy a new speedo but happy to hear the newer ones are trying to addesss the issue. It's a shame, but that fogging is just part of the 'joy' in riding Harleys.
Yeah in hindsight I could have just lived with it. A good video to either stop you doing it or make you aware of the possible consequences and perhaps do it a little differently as outlined towards the end of the video
@@ScouserDave16 my next video coming out in a few days will be me pulling the speedo apart to have a look in side and see what damage I did. Will be interesting!!
Hello, that was bad luck (the needle breaking while dr8lling the hole, condensation is just Harley...). My Sport Glide had the same problem after just one year. Harley replaced the speedo under warranty, although it has taken a long time to get the correct part for the UK. I have seen other videos and while I was waiting for the part I put lots of large silica packets underneath the instrument and left it for a few days without riding. It seemed to cure the problem for a while but not completely. May be, now that you have a broken speedo, you could completely dismantle it so that if in the future the same happens again you will have a better idea of where to drill the hole. We should not have to put up with these issues on such expensive bikes, but there you go. This is a Harley problem, no other manufacturer seems to have so many issues with condensation... By the way, I have gone all chrome with my Sport Glide but I really like yours too.... Really cool bike!!
Yeah I think I'll pull the old speedo apart if anything to see what it looks like! Cheers I'm loving the blacked out look of the SG..but chrome looks good too 👍
Same thing happened to me. I drilled my hole just off the centre of that same module, My speedo needle now only goes to 20km/hr. Still have slight misting over digital screen but a lot better from that perspective. I will pull it off again and see what else i can do, but it looks like I'll have to do the same as you Rod and buy another bloody speedo.
That also happened to me on my 2nd speedo. The first was replaced under warranty, and don't get me started on the inaccuracy of the fuel gauge. It's frustrating that Harley engineering puts their customers in this position. Can I ask what you were charged for the replacement speedo?
@@RidesForDays Thanks.....Although I'm also out of the warranty period, I've asked the dealer to request another replacement speedo under goodwill warranty from HD. They think I have a fair chance, on the basis that I would not have been put into the position of drilling a hole if the speedo was not still fogging up. I'll let you know.
Great video. Can you do an update with the new speedo letting us know if the new one with the pin hole works out or ends up fogging up? I’m on my second, at now it’s warming up the fogging is really bad. I have noticed if I go west away from the coast it will clear up. Which brings me to another question, when are you re-attempting your Broken Hill ride?
I'll do an update on the speedo probably after 500 ks or more.. what year model is your SG and when did you get your 2nd speedo was it this year? At this stage I'm planning on heading for Broken Hill at the end of the year for a road trip so in about 8 weeks. Should be nice and hot!!
@@RidesForDays I’ve got a 2018 Slim, bought new 2019, and replaced the speedo in Dec 2019. Living on the GC and it being so wet recently, it seems to have gotten a lot worse than previous years.
Re: Broken Hill, if time permits take the road up and back to Tibooburra. All sealed, it was what I’d imagine riding in America would be like. Packsaddle ROadhouse on the way is a great place to stay too.
Well this quite a coincidence because mine fogged up yesterday on a longer ride and I could only half read the digital section. I knew some people drilled holes in them and was just contemplating doing it. Then I watched this. Mine is still under warranty... I went for another ride today and it hadn't gone away before the ride completely but it got worse when I rode... I tried making it go away just now with the heat of a hair dryer - ie. like you can do to a mirror in the bathroom but even that didn't get ride of the slight mark from the condensation. I'm pretty unhappy about it. I know it's common but does that mean I'm supposed to accept it? I don't think I should have to.
If it's covered under warranty definitely change it. The newer ones don't do it I believe ( could be wrong). My odometer is new and I've ridden about 500ks so far with it and no fogging yet
*speedometer, not odometer, and the road speed is detected electronically from the transmission, not by the abs sensor on the front wheel. I got a replacement unit for my SG under warranty, and the new one barely shows any condensation at all, don't think I'll be drilling any holes in mine...

I drilled mine in two places and it’s still working and the fogging is getting better

Use a torch to identify the empty cavity on the white casing and drill accordingly in that area.
Worked like a charm on my 2018 FatBob.

Thanks heaps very helpful. Won't be drilling

Yep..gonna be no other way....once the circuit board is damage there's no going back

A new speedo will set you back $500

They appear to have e made improvements this model year in their speedos. My SG and original odometer are 2019 just like the one you had replaced.

@@ritchieok29 yeah I went through there last July. Keen to go again...this time on the Harley would be good
If you were to pull apart the Speedo, I would rotate the glass, so that same foggy part is axis at the 200/220k section
Good thinking..i hadn't thought of that!
What happens if your hitting 220k and wanna see your speed lol
