Grew up eating prickly pears and what we did was take a burlap sack and roll the pears in the burlap right after you picked them off the cactus and the burlap would catch all the needles, more recently I have used a portable propane torch to quickly burn the needles off before picking the fruit. No tongs needed and no needles drive into other fruit in the bucket.
I'm picking prickly pears tomorrow. Would the propane torch possibly hurt the cactus? I'm thinking about torching the prickly pears after I pick them with tongs.
I stray into wine making occasionally . I bet that cactus pears would make amazing wine.I have had several cacti in pots for a long time. It is amazing how the pads just send out roots when one falls to the ground. They haven't made pears in a long time tho.. I'm going to plant them in the ground to see if that helps. I'm also a jelly making fool. I have a whole freezer with just berries and fruit for jelly. Blackberries, dewberries, wild cherries, mayhaws, muscadine (wild and tame), huckleberries, and more.
If one has a cold ,the prickly pear is loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants.Since it is harvested wild (organic ) ,even better .You can make prickly pear juice lemonade or limeade .
Sorry, hit the send too soon! Lol I can just taste that jelly on a nice warm homemade biscuit with a steamy cup of herbal tea looking out your kitchen window. What a scenario! I just love you guys! Take care.💕
I just this instant made a tiny batch from prickly pears I picked in the South of France. I just sat down to rest and your video popped up! You’d think TH-cam was pychic 😂.I love seeing how you made a big batch. Didn’t quite catch the purpose of the vinegar. Would love to know. Thanks for the fun video.
urine makes a great modifier in natural (plant) dyeing because the ammonia in urine changes the PH of the dye bath to change the color of the plant dye.
In Florida or in Hawaii you can make Red Hibiscus water out of Red Hibiscus Flower and combine it with the Prickly Pear Juice :really good !! and refreshing. Plus really healthy ,if one goes to the gym :,or has a cold: loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants.
I live in Tucson and would like to make around a gallon. I think that would last a year and give me enough left over to barter or give away. Approx how much of a 5 gallon bucket/buckets of fruit would that take?
When I was kid and out hiking. I would take a sharp knife and cut the tops of the fruit open and dig out the insides to eat. Of course I spit the seeds out. Fresh like that its a light flavor of dark raspberry with a hint of orange. Very light on the pallet. Boiled down with sugar the flavors jump out.
Heat the fruit, heat the juice, heat the ready jelly in the glas? Three times heating for nearly a hour. This is much to much. Old style cooking, sorry. I boil my jelly all in all for three minutes and keep it for years, if necessary. It tastes fresh and all viitamines are still in. And I use raw brown sugar, no white industrial sugar. Many greetings from Germany!
What a great thing to share with everybody~thank you! Everyone involved was fully engaged in the process and having a wonderful time~ well done!
OH....this took me back to my childhood in AZ....thank you! We loved prickly pears.

I still love watching the older/earlier videos 😀
you can also make it in to syrup the same way just don't put as much pectin. My family made it by accident and loved it!

I live in NM and there are definitely local wineries that make prickly pear wine. I don't drink personally, but I've heard that it's delicious!
What wonderful lessons to learn for all involved! Best move you ever made.
Shelley, I love your family’s sustainability! What a wonderful idea to make jelly from the prickly pears. It looked delicious! I can just taste it
Elaine is a friend of mine. It was a joy to see her here.
Home made is always the best..
I still have close to 6 gallons of Pindo Palm fruit in my freezer to make into jelly.

Belly for Jelly!!! I love it!
Love prickly pear jelly. Y'all should try mesquite bean jelly, if there's mesquite trees in your area.

I think you on to something. Try the 10 gal to 1 gal jelly. We have made it with about 30 gal of fruit. Try it out and let us know.
I can fill 2 buckets in just my neighborhood alone. Give me something to do as I walk my dog. I will get back to you.
Good going, gang! Mom n Dad, try making margaritas with it. They are a lovely pink and dee-licious!
Awesome!!!
That was cool.
so much jelly you can sell it at the farmer's market, online or on Marketplace.
Shame we don't have prickly pears here in the UK. so we do not know what they taste like but that jelly looks delicious.
Imagine raspberry, blueberry and strawberry all in one.
Sounds wonderful, wish they grew here. We make our own jam and they would make a tasty addition.

Royandloraine Northwood fresh they taste like a mixture of sweet watermelon and cooked beets
Now you can get a low sugar pectin. This allows you to cut back on the amount of sugar needed.
Great video. How is the well doing?
+Holly Laughter Well is doing well :) Thanks for watching the videos!
Paint strainer bags are disposable and work too.
3 cups prickly juice, 1/2 cup lime juice, 1/4 cup pectin, 4 cups sugar
Do you pick them before or after they bIoom?
They bloom, and 3-ish months later the fruit is ripe
It also makes juice and wine from it
so how did you get the stickers off?????????
I want to know .. can you can just the raw juice?
How many poo d's of fruit needed for this batch?
Que.bonita.familia
I have to order, because this wonderful fruit does not grow in Alaska. ;(
Maybe pour a bit less sugar in though...
another way to pick the pears is to cut the drinking end off of a water bottle, put the bottle over the prickly pear and then squeeze.
+Bradon Cohorn Excellent idea!!! :)
+mylittlehomestead that's how we do it out here
Leave some for the wildlife..
just saw u can burn them with torch to get rid of thorns before picking, and u can also eat the leaves after cooking
Didn’t those nice ladies get to bring any prickly pears jelly home with them?
