Grew up eating prickly pears and what we did was take a burlap sack and roll the pears in the burlap right after you picked them off the cactus and the burlap would catch all the needles, more recently I have used a portable propane torch to quickly burn the needles off before picking the fruit. No tongs needed and no needles drive into other fruit in the bucket.

I'm picking prickly pears tomorrow. Would the propane torch possibly hurt the cactus? I'm thinking about torching the prickly pears after I pick them with tongs.

you can also make it in to syrup the same way just don't put as much pectin. My family made it by accident and loved it!

I stray into wine making occasionally . I bet that cactus pears would make amazing wine.I have had several cacti in pots for a long time. It is amazing how the pads just send out roots when one falls to the ground. They haven't made pears in a long time tho.. I'm going to plant them in the ground to see if that helps. I'm also a jelly making fool. I have a whole freezer with just berries and fruit for jelly. Blackberries, dewberries, wild cherries, mayhaws, muscadine (wild and tame), huckleberries, and more.

I live in NM and there are definitely local wineries that make prickly pear wine. I don't drink personally, but I've heard that it's delicious!

I still have close to 6 gallons of Pindo Palm fruit in my freezer to make into jelly.

If one has a cold ,the prickly pear is loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants.Since it is harvested wild (organic ) ,even better .You can make prickly pear juice lemonade or limeade .

I just this instant made a tiny batch from prickly pears I picked in the South of France. I just sat down to rest and your video popped up! You’d think TH-cam was pychic 😂.I love seeing how you made a big batch. Didn’t quite catch the purpose of the vinegar. Would love to know. Thanks for the fun video.

urine makes a great modifier in natural (plant) dyeing because the ammonia in urine changes the PH of the dye bath to change the color of the plant dye.

In Florida or in Hawaii you can make Red Hibiscus water out of Red Hibiscus Flower and combine it with the Prickly Pear Juice :really good !! and refreshing. Plus really healthy ,if one goes to the gym :,or has a cold: loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants.

I live in Tucson and would like to make around a gallon. I think that would last a year and give me enough left over to barter or give away. Approx how much of a 5 gallon bucket/buckets of fruit would that take?

When I was kid and out hiking. I would take a sharp knife and cut the tops of the fruit open and dig out the insides to eat. Of course I spit the seeds out. Fresh like that its a light flavor of dark raspberry with a hint of orange. Very light on the pallet. Boiled down with sugar the flavors jump out.

another way to pick the pears is to cut the drinking end off of a water bottle, put the bottle over the prickly pear and then squeeze.

Heat the fruit, heat the juice, heat the ready jelly in the glas? Three times heating for nearly a hour. This is much to much. Old style cooking, sorry.
I boil my jelly all in all for three minutes and keep it for years, if necessary. It tastes fresh and all viitamines are still in. And I use raw brown sugar, no white industrial sugar.
    Many greetings from Germany!
