well if youre an outdoorsman, you'll quickly learn to carry a few spices in your pack, whether cooking cactus or roasting a rattlesnake, spices make food more enjoyable. if you dont have any, well just eat the food without any. simple.
Both salt and spices (barks, herbs, roots) originate in salt lake, desert and wilderness areas so why not? You probably meant using the shakers for it much like using a grill rack and knife isn't at all primitive forms of cooking.... should have used a rock and a huge bone right?
WOW.... cool vid. Yeah I eat em also . Boil them let em cool off and store em in the fridge so you can enjoy them anyway you can. You can also make a Cactus salad too.
ive never seen anyone scrape a nopal 😕😆 my grandmother holds the nopal and removes all thorns with a small blade ive been eating nopal since i was a kid the most common meal in mexico is nopales and beans with corn tortillas and that (can be for many) is an every day meal

thank you im from Australia and lots of people eat the yellow fruit that grows on it but never heard of anybody eating the leaves.. there not native to Australia but in places they grow wild and others grow them as a garden plant so now im interested to try something new
Harold Harold 1. Shave the nopal (cactus leaf) with the blade, just the skin layer with the thorns. 2. Once nopales are skinned give a quick rinse to remove some of the small hair like spines 3. Slice or cube the nopal then put on a pot with a small amount of water, should be about a quarter in relation to the nopales weight. Add onion, garlic and cilantro while it boils. Also a bit of salt. The nopal releases a lot of water while being cooked so the water in the pot will rise a lot. Once they are cooked strain the water out, and you can eat them as they are, or you can also, lightly fry and add eggs, or add some tomato sauce and Chile ( hot pepper). My grandmother fries some pork loin then adds onions and a tomato sauce with oregano a bit of spices and California pepper lets it boil a bit and adds the nopales in. There are a lot of recipes. We have a few nopal planted around the house so we eat them all year long. They easy like grow with proper care and every 2 weeks or so we have new leafs ready for picking.
In Mexico they're grown for eating, so we have very tender and fresh ones, and then people at the market clean the pads for us so we don't have to deal with thorns at all. Funny, in Spanish the prickly pear fruit is called "tuna" they're juicy and very sweet.
@@onegrapefruitlover That's so interesting, I would've never thought that people eat them in normal conditions. Jamaica also has strong Spanish influences so that's probably why we call it as 'tuna'.
Junkyard Fox That's my understanding. My grandmother who is from Michoacan, Mexico cooks nopales all the time almost. That is why I found it a little humorous that other people would be surprised with the idea of eating a cactus. No shade.

It's fucking 2AM and I have a final tomorrow what the hell am I watching
youre learning about the world around you, not all knowledge can be found in exams. thanks for watching, be sure to watch our other videos for more info and adventures.
Junkyard Fox dude don't get me wrong this vid was super helpful but it's just that I will probably never find myself in a desert like ever. Really good tho if I do. Also my exam was a math final, so I don't really see how this would be helpful in that situation but nonetheless it was a good vid my guy 👍
Jamaican me crazy what kind of math was itm
Jamaican me crazy 😂 don't be that guy. Gain some humor
What ? But it's summer break?!
This is survival food? This is my people’s everyday lunch 😂
Yes, it's survival food if you're in the desert with little to no other food source, genius 🤦🏻♂️the fact that some people eat this in their every day diet doesn't change that
PJ it’s a fucking joke idiot
I learned how to make chocolate from the cocoa beans, then watched a video on how to grow pineapple in your backyard, now its time to learn how to eat pricky pears.
I'm on a roll tonight TH-cam!
Came from camel eating cactus!
lol
No. Cactus came from the Americas. There were no more camels there so humans have been eating them here before camels came across cactus.
Same
pumasgoya Are you fucking stupid? Or just restarted asf.
Me too
I found this while doing research for planting/propagating a prickly pear pad and now I'm excited to cook with it!
Hello Anna, I’m glad you enjoyed our video. Though I gotta say, this is an older video and hasn’t aged well. Here’s the link to a newer video with better information and presentation: th-cam.com/video/HplAd2Hc0rU/w-d-xo.html

First thing I thought
😂
?
Lol glad you didn’t void that blooper 😆😆
Me over here in germany: If I ever get into a situation like this, I'll know which cactus I can eat.
Wait they have cactus in Germany??
desert survival food uses salt and spices ?
Christoper Lim 99% of ppl eating this are "surviving" at the breakfast table.
well if youre an outdoorsman, you'll quickly learn to carry a few spices in your pack, whether cooking cactus or roasting a rattlesnake, spices make food more enjoyable. if you dont have any, well just eat the food without any. simple.
They use their own sweat to make salt
Ayo_iitzYeBoiiPotato Gaming shut the hell up my man shut the fuck up
Both salt and spices (barks, herbs, roots) originate in salt lake, desert and wilderness areas so why not? You probably meant using the shakers for it much like using a grill rack and knife isn't at all primitive forms of cooking.... should have used a rock and a huge bone right?
I saw coyote Peterson make prickly pear fruit juice with his sock and it looked creepy but nice
WOW.... cool vid. Yeah I eat em also . Boil them let em cool off and store em in the fridge so you can enjoy them anyway you can. You can also make a Cactus salad too.
Fox: try too get the most appetizing cactus
Me: wtf me don’t wanna eat a cuctus
Grammar police here you should be imprisoned for awful spelling's a ticket 🎟.

ive never seen anyone scrape a nopal 😕😆
my grandmother holds the nopal and removes all thorns with a small blade ive been eating nopal since i was a kid the most common meal in mexico is nopales and beans with corn tortillas and that (can be for many) is an every day meal
does she cook it the same way or add anything different please
@@haroldharold3908 don't be afraid to experiment with these make anything you think could work(be sure it's cooked tho)
there are many ways to serve them a couple of examples
*sliced with eggs
mix vegetables/meats
salads
fish chicken *etc...
it can also be used in *salsas/ sauce like guacamole *
PUT IT IN A HOTDOG
you can also search "*recetas con nopales*" or english..
if you plan on going out and cut some be very careful with your hands if you're not wearing gloves (i never did and neither has my grandmother to this day) use a sharp kitchen knife for quick cutting and to remove spines
BUT
if you want pinpoint accuracy like you've never seen before use a small razor blade to remove the small spines
thank you im from Australia and lots of people eat the yellow fruit that grows on it but never heard of anybody eating the leaves.. there not native to Australia but in places they grow wild and others grow them as a garden plant so now im interested to try something new
@@haroldharold3908 good luck and i hope you find a recipe that suits you
Harold Harold 1. Shave the nopal (cactus leaf) with the blade, just the skin layer with the thorns.
2. Once nopales are skinned give a quick rinse to remove some of the small hair like spines
Me watching the video : hmm interesting, lets try this
Also me : Lives near the sea
That would go well with a couple of rattle snakes......
complete meal 🥘.
Thank you for sharing.
😎
Me: Watching how to cook a cactus
Also me: “Seems interesting 🤔
Other 3.6M people: Very interesting
In Jamaica we consider these plants to be weeds so we usually chop them down... We also call them "tuna" (idk why).
In some parts St Thomas they use the tuna in hair as a type of treatment. I live in Kingston n I've actually eaten them like he did. No pepper tho
Thanks for sharing, I will sure add this to my bucket list
I grow them in my backyard and eat cactus for pleasure they're hella good
Can you eating raw cactus as salad?
I agree, nopales and aloe vera is the best!
Purge that doesn’t seem far fetched at all fym
Not that crazy about cleaning them but would love to try them

Great video brother! Let's see some friction fire and more desert food!
i need to get working on my first friction fire. will haev it done in a few months, thanks for watching buddy,
Junkyard Fox Call me I can help. Man if you could come visit I could get multiple kits made for you and just teach you all of the versions.
I, too, live in the desert (SoCal). I am very interested in everything related to desert survival.
Mexicans eat cactus with eggs for breakfast and what not 😂😂
you can put cactus on steak, tacos, even soup. a very common food in mexico.
Junkyard Fox That's my understanding. My grandmother who is from Michoacan, Mexico cooks nopales all the time almost. That is why I found it a little humorous that other people would be surprised with the idea of eating a cactus. No shade.
yeah its common knowledge here in the american southwest or mexico but viewers from hawaii or alaska, cancada are just blown away lmao theres a restaurant in town that serves nopales stuffed with cheese and mushrooms, goddamn its delicious.
The preparation and processing is exactly like what my grandmother does. Very informative video. thank you!
Junkyard Fox I'd have to try that 😩 thanks for replying!! Have a good night 😊😊
In the end he whips out some rice and meat then places the cactus on the top. * chef's kiss *
Stir fry it with onion, tomatoes, cilantro, garlic and spices 😋😋
