- For many people who menstruate, using a tampon is a rite of passage. After all, tampons can be serious game-changers when you have your period. Anyone who's used tampons knows how hard it can be to put them in-especially when it's your first time. If you're not sure how to put a tampon in, don't worry, we've got you. We asked three girls who have NEVER used tampons before to try using them on camera. Some of the girls had a way easier time than others. If you've ever wondered exactly how to use a tampon, you're definitely going to want to watch this.

Do you use tampons? What was it like the first time you tried to use one?
It was really uncomfortable and I couldn't move. I felt so relieved when I took it out. But I knew that I needed to try again bcuz I was going to the swimming pool next day. So I tried again and it worked!

I used tampons since my first period, I’ve used a pad like twice bc i got my period at school and ran out of tampons 😭 I think it’s more comfortable than sitting in blood.

Edit: finally uses a tampon, it’s only scary once yoir standing their contemplating if your gonna do it or not, even though it’s embarrassing and funny, look at diagrams, on the box or google, ask any women in your life that you trust because it’s natural, the only reason I had a bad experience with it is because I was scared and tense, relax and it wouldn’t hurt at all, you can’t feel a thing once it’s in their, I seriously thought it fell out so I kept checking ( I was at a waterpark lol) I will only use it if I absolutely have to though because I’m still a little scared lmao but yeah that’s it :)
No they aren't! I promise. I used one for the first time today and they are really easy to put in. As long as you use a good brand and take it out on time there shouldnt be a poblem.

I used my first tampon on the first day of my first ever period... it took me less than a minute to put in and it was without an applicator. Younger me rly said: Skip the bs, lets do this 😒

I totally freaked, and chickened out the first time I tried to put in a tampon. But the second time I grit my teeth and did it, and it wasn't that bad. It felt like the biggest accomplishment of life lol; I was so proud of myself😂😂.

If your tampon is uncomfortable it isn't up far enough. Your tampon should be hidden by the skin and it should feel as if it isn't even there. *Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk no one cares about-*
The first time I tried a tampon it was fine going up but when I tried pulling it out, (it was in for like a minute) I walked around for a minute then tried taking it out, it hurt. So my grandma said I should put Vaseline on the applicator then shove it up there, and *leave it in there* . Sure enough it worked!!!!

Good for them for going online and doing this. I didn’t use tampons until I was 24. Not all of us have a sister or mother (or another willing person!) to guide us with these things. It’s nice to see they’ve made a first experience like this visible to young people who may need to use a tampon one day but may be afraid to do so without help. Just remember health education isn’t always accessible - thank you, Seventeen!

Edit: I felt it my very first time also and yes sometimes you feel sometimes you don’t everyone’s body is different. I’ve been using tampons for 2 years and there are days where I feel it and some days where I don’t.

It’s very VERY rare that the string will break off, if that somehow does happen you have to use your fingers to take it out, it won’t be really deep because your uterus will not allow it to go far in your body.

@@roro6320 don’t worry about TSS i promise it’s is SUPER rare. in fact your more likely to get struck by lightning then to get TSS. as long as you keep your tampon in for a maximum of 8 hours, you should be perfect. even if you do leave it in for a little bit more over 8 hours you still should be fine

Fun fact: my grandma never used a tampon when she had her period. Here’s a quick story she told me (not going into full detail) that morning she put on her pad normally and in second period (school) she felt the pad was moving around even tho her pants weren’t. In last period the pad fell down her bottoms and almost fell to the ground.

Hi no ones probably gonna see this, but during my first period, which was around a year and half ago. I used a tampon and was not scared. It’s not scary and only scary when you psych yourself out. But just kind of play around with it and find what angle works for you. And if you can’t find an angle it ok. Tbh the first 5-8 times you use a tampon aren’t gonna be the best. It’s gonna be to low, to high or weird angle. Around your 13-14th tampon you start to learn yourself and eventually you will get enough experience with what your body is comfortable with and how to work a tampon. Around your second box of tampons you will very seasoned/experienced and you won’t be scared. If you don’t like tampons that’s cool too just whatever your comfy with :)

I personally think it’s really important for every woman/teen to learn how to use a tampon you may not prefer it and that’s fine but at least know how to use one so if you have situation where there’s no other option your not totally panicking (sorry for any spelling mistakes)
Tip for tampon newbies: the Way you know your tampon is up far enough is when you can't feel it and can move freely as if it isn't even there. This goes for tampons with or without applicators. ALSO, NEVER MESS WITH THE STRING UNLESS YOU'RE TUCKING IT BACK IN TO HIDE IT. THE STRING DOESN'T GO IN YOUR (y'know) AND DON'T YOU DARE CUT IT. Replace the tampon every 4-8 hours. My first tampon horror story was that I dropped it in the toilet most likely bc I was holding it the incorrect way. I had to fish it out myself bc mom was getting groceries.

It is true it'll be painful but it'll get easier as you go. If it makes you feel better, last month (when I first tried tampons) I had misplaced it while already having sweating, cramps, and a migrane all while being alone for like 30 minutes and was too weak to do much than drink bc every time I moved for longer than a second or two It'd send shocks of pain and heat through my entire being. 😭😭😭

Pankychu Nope! it doesn’t hurt unless you put it in right and relax your muscles when inserting. And no it’s not uncomfortable if you put it in far enough, if you don’t put it far enough you will feel it, but not pain. Just make sure to take it out after 2-8 hours. Also if your continuously bleeding through tampons don’t be afraid of super plus!

I’m a dancer and ever since I was little I used pads. I’m 20 now and after years of feeling gross and uncomfortable wearing pads when I was active, I put a tampon in and honestly made such a difference. I feel so much more comfortable and confident now xx

I tried it last week, i was kind of scared, i needed 15 minutes to figure out how to insert it. But it was amazing, i almost forgot i was on my period because i didn’t have to change or something. I also didn’t leek so thats great. I really recommend to try a cup! Make sure you choose one that has good quality and material!

Stick your finger up. I know its weird but maybe in the bath or shower when youre in the water. I did this before and it really helped. It also goes at an angle. Dont do it straight up

No but seriously, I tried a tampon for the first time in high school and it sucked so bad that I never went back. But then when I turned 21 I tried it again and it was the best decision I made. Putting a tampon in shouldn’t hurt. I think when I first tried it my hymen wasn’t stretched enough so that’s why it sucked. You should try one even if it’s just to practice

If you feel the tampon, you should push it in more. I remember trying it out for the first time, it hurted a LOT! But thats because I was afraid to push it far enough in. :)

to those scared to use a tampon... trust me when i say it’s not as bad as you think it will be. i recommend using a small one your first time, even if you have a heavy flow. i found that a small one was less intimidating and i thought it wouldn’t hurt as much as a bigger tampon (tampons don’t hurt, it might just be a little uncomfortable your first time). tampons do not hurt, if it hurts you’re probably not putting it in correctly. tampons are much more comfortable than pads and you can move more without worrying if your pad will fold up. just change it out around every 5 1/2 hours or when you feel the need to. i promise you it’s not as bad as you think it will be.
People who haven’t used tampons are acting like they know how it feels skfjjef. As long as you push it far enough you shouldn’t feel anything.
I think they are psyching themselves out about it and already think they know what is gonna feel like. They are new to it so they would be that confident yet I guess idek

Girls out there! I definitely recommend you trying out tampons. Don't be scared, it's really easy after you learn how to properly apply them. And they're life changing! My first time trying them was horrible as well and I thought I'm never doing that again. But I did. And I'm really glad about that 💕

julia pokojska Tampons are bad for your body . There are pads out there that aren’t bulky and are actually comfortable . Tampons can cause toxic shock syndrome . And tampons essentially plug your vagina so it does soak up a lot of blood but some blood isn’t able to come out which isn’t good for you and can prolong your period . A lot of pads are made of recycled plastic as well and are bleached ( as well as some tampons ) . I recommend you guys use Cherish pads or natural/organic pads that are made of cotton ( the more layers of cotton the better ) .

You might want to consider trying a menstrual cup, it's so much better than tampons. Simply made of sylicon, it will last you 10 years; absolutely safe, confortable and easy to use. It was such a game changer to me, I haven't bought a single pad or tampon in the last 4 years 😍 Also, it's super sustainable.

I used my 1st tampon at age 35, no shame in my game. My mom died when I was 11 so no one ever taught me how to use one but i self educated and here we are. I like them for vacation and that clean feeling as opposed to pads which gets unnecessary areas messy. ❤

The first time I put on a tampon, I fainted in my bathroom, seriously. I started feeling very dizzy, started seeing spots until they covered my whole vision and couldn't see anything, and I heart a high-pitch sound and couldn't hear anything else, I felt all that at the same time. Gladly I took It off before carefully laying on the floor. I lost consciousness for what felt like 2 minutes, then started seeing spots again, hearing that sound and feeling my head dizzy. Those started slowly disappearing in something close to one minute.
That is the reason I still kinda fear tampons. . .

That can happen sometimes. It’s called the vasovagal response. You can get it if your tampon is hitting your hymen or your cervix, because both are very sensitive. Just give it a quick google to ease your mind.

i’m 13 and i use tampons the majority of the time. they make things so much easier! they’re less messy, easier to move with, more comfortable, and give more ability! without a tampon, you can’t swim as well. overall, using a tampon has been better for me than using a pad. i do recommend! :)

Not all tamps are made equal… my go to ones are playtex sport. And never put a tamp in when you are dry, they go in so much better when you’re lubed up from blood.

To the women who have tried and failed to use a tampon despite knowing where your anatomy is and clearly understanding how to insert it: try to make sure you are comfortable and not anxious when doing it.
For some women, anxiety can cause the muscles down there to tighten, making penetration (like inserting a tampon) difficult, painful, or sometimes even impossible. Learning to be comfortable with the idea of a tampon can go a long way to how physically comfortable it is to use.
If these symptoms happen often or are simply negatively impacting your happiness in any way, I suggest seeing a doctor. Vaginismus is a thing and it can be treated.
I just wanted to mention this in case anyone reading this is experiencing these symptoms and doesn't know why. Not being able to have comfortable penetration isn't something that is talked about often, but it isn't rare by any means.
There’s also the possibility of a hymen abnormality.

Honestly, tampons are great, you just have to learn how to properly use them. And it takes practice. Some tips: you should be able to feel it, but it shouldn't be uncomfortable. I usually put one foot on the toilet when I put one in so that it gives you the right angle, and I take a deep breath, pushing it in when I exhale so that I'm relaxed and its less uncomfortable. Also, push it in until it gets to the grip part.
And you don't have to be afraid! In order to stay safe from TSS don't wear them for more than 8 hours and don't sleep in them unless you're gonna sleep for less than 8 hours.
