Leica Q2: ISO controlled Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) Limitations and how to deal with it

  • I demonstrate the dependence of available shutter speed (exposure time) on chosen ISO values.
    I also briefly show that Leica implemented the same constraints at the Leica M10-P and the Leica M10 and Leica M.
    Last, I show sample photos taken with the Leica Q2 which show that the Q2 nevertheless is fully capable of taking photos of the night sky, dark scenes, available light photography and the Milky Way.

    Great video. Finally somebody addressed the elephant in the room. I talked to Wetzlar and they promised to fix the limitation in a future firmware update (which never came). What is the final solution? Bought a Sony camera with the 24 mm f1.4 GM. 😢 What a shame, the “manual” Leica can’t do manual exposure. I can’t believe that heat is the issue. This camera is a beautiful piece of engineered metal.

    Very good video , i was confused before i watched this as i enjoy night cityscape scenes ,,,,, basically we have 120 seconds available regardless of anything including T mode ,thanks.

    Easily most concise and informative on the use of Q2 . Thankyou very much. I have had the q and now the q2 and this channel is a huge help. If you had a course tutorial I would even pay as your very easy to understand and very good at explaining it .

      Hi Math discovered your channel and nice reviews (and germanic accent ;)) i am so hesitant to move from nikon D750 to the Q2, it is so worlds apart. My biggest fear is the one focal length. I do street and landscape and travel. I feel my 85mm will be missed. Yet i aspire to carry less weight as we all do, and Q2 is perfect in that way. What do you think of the digital crops? You dont use them you said? Also, what would be a decent alternative in your opinion? Fuji does no FF :( cheers!

      Hi Dan, I personally think the Q2 is the perfect supplementary camera to a DSLR or DSLM. Depending on what your photography is all about, if you have ONLY the Q2 you might miss other focal lengths. For me the Q2 is perfect for street photography, light weight travel and the always-with-me camera if I do not want to carry a lot of luggage with me. Having said that, the image quality of the Q2 is way off superior to the D750 and offers lots of reserves on resolution for crops so you can crop significantly into a photo to simulate a longer focal length on a D750. Best wishes for your decision. I will probably post a short video on crops with the Leica Q2 shortly ... stay tuned :)

      @@mathphotographer thanks much! Bokeh will never be the same with a cropped 75mm portrait, so we are indeed in a catch22 .... i may start looking at the fuji range, or sony ... maybe there is a reason everyone is now moving to Sony ;)

      Sony A7RIII or successor might me the solution for you. I currently have a Panasonic S1R here ... might be posting some thoughts on it, an amazing piece of tech.

    DPReview had a great test for ISO invariance. After about ISO800 the sensor appears to be invariant. This would let you shoot at ISO 800 and boost the exposure by 2 EV in post to achieve the same exposure and noise level as you would have gotten at ISO 3200. Far from perfect, but with a 28mm lens you'll start getting noticeable star trails by 15 seconds anyways.
    Thanks for the video, it was very helpful!

    Hello, hope you see this comment, just wanted to understand 1 thing: when photographing the northern lights and milky way, despite having the "right" settings on paper (ISO 3k, f1.7, infinity, AFs, center wighted & multi focus, color temp 3500, 1/500 or 1/1000, DNG), the pics i took turned out to be completely black. Could you tell me why that is and how to work with it on the Q1?

    Did they fix this in firmware updates? If not its a total dealbreaker for me.

    I have been working on a night assignment and that’s when I found the limitation. So I used a Fuji GfX 50s for the tripod shoots and the Q (first version) as hand held up to ISO 3200. Beautiful performance. At 6400 there’s too much noise for my taste but everything below is acceptable, slthough there’s a noticeable improve in cleanliness at 1600 compared to 3200. So that’s my solution, take two cameras.
    I just wonder if the SL, which I have been considering instead of upgrading to the Q2, has the same problem.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should wait for the SL2, rumours say it comes this year. Since Leica and Panasonic cooperate and the Panasonic S1R is already on market, the SL2 will be a huge upgrade, I bet on it. However, not unlikely that we see the same constraints on the SL.

    Good afternoon from Jerez de la Frontera - Andalucia- (Spain). I have seen if video, I was trying to make long exposure to 3,200 ISO and it did not happen for 4 seconds. Under my modest opinion, without understanding much, I think that it lacks in the camera menus a button where you can cancel the noise reduction in long exposures, perhaps this way you can advance at a higher ISO in a little more time.

    Hi. Thanks for the video. I have a Leica Q. I like to shoot in manual. When I set the shutter speed dial to 1+, my max exposure time is 1 sec. Turns of the dial when in 1+, regardless of my ISO setting and aperture, are limited to .6, .8 and 1 sec. Any idea what the problem is? Sure appreciate your help. Thanks a million.

    Thank you for this super informative video. So I'm wondering if you have gotten a shot of the Milky Way with the Q2? I am planning to shoot the sunset and moonrise, but over NYC, will have a lot of ambient light galore, still am looking at it as night photography, so I hope I can adjust these settings on my Q2 to fit right. Danke

    Seeing this kind of constraint on a $5,000 is disappointing. I don't think its a heat issue. The camera is made of more metal than most of cameras, so it should be able to dissipate the heat just fine and better than the Sony RX series. I think the issue is the sensor would generate too much noise and Leica doesn't want people to see it.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possible. As shown in the video, I can live with the constraints. But you are right, if you spend that much for a camera, the choice should be with the consumer.

    Ooof, having just started looking into this camera, that is a bit of a deal breaker. My good but not stunning Sony RX100 allows more flexibility than that. The whole reason I was looking at this Leica was because I figured getting a full framed sensor would then smoke the milky way shots I would get with the Sony - except the RX100 lets me shoot 13 seconds at iso 3200 (and could do more seconds) and get an ok shot. This camera limits me to 4 seconds at iso 3200......well, there is no hope of a milky way shot then as even with the small Sony I would like a few more seconds than 13; sure sure, a full frame sensor sits in the Leica yada yada but it is only a bit more than double the sensor size and you can't even get near half the exposure time (1/3rd even).
