    Hi Thorsten. This is Rick. I attended your three-day workshop in San Francisco in April 2019. I was the one wearing the black leather Harley Davidson hat every day. I shot with a Nikon D810 and a 24-70mm lens. You said 98% of your attendees shoot with Leica and the other 2% soon will. Well, I’m in that 2% as I now own a Leica Q2 and love it. I’ve gone back to San Francisco several times and shot street photography only with the Leica Q2. It’s an amazing camera. I used to shoot with Nikon zoom lenses but now with the Leica Q2 28mm lens I still feel like I have a zoom lens since I can shoot at 28, 35, 50, and 75mm. The images are great even at 75mm. I like the button on the back that makes it fast to zoom in. There are many more great features in the Leica Q2 that you didn’t cover and other people on TH-cam don’t cover. You can only discover those by reading almost every page of the user guide. I shot two hours of video with the Leica Q2 with one battery. Like other cameras it will only shoot for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the Q2 gets very hot and will not shoot video again until it cools down, which takes about 15 minutes, then it’s good for another 30 minutes. I enjoyed your workshop very much and you got me excited about shooting street photography with a Leica Q2. Leica Q2 is a must have camera.

    Very informative review. I do however find the occasional plug in the video a bit too much. I don't mind if you'd like to plug your own book, but put it either in the beginning, middle or end, rather than spamming it every 2 minutes :)

    I am a fan and have purchased from your site several items, but the promotional interruptions are jarring and occur while you are talking and we cant see anything else. Very distracting and takes away too much from your content and lessens it. Nobody else in this field is doing it this way and for good reason. You should reconsider your approach in my humble opinion. Nice to see you posting again

    The Q2 looks incredible. It’s interesting that Leica have developed a fixed lens system capable of covering such a wide variety of focal lengths. I would imagine lens sales represent a significant portion of Leica corporate revenue, so to develop a system which could (ultimately) result in decreased lens sales is interesting.
    This video was well worth the wait. Best Leica dedicated channel on YT by some distance. Keep them coming.

    I held off buying one for a year. I had my very well used Leica Q and a Sony and therefore decided to go into the Leica M monochrome set up. I know this will be heresy for most Leica users but I found the rangefinder inability to be spontaneous, ie focus on moving animals, children a real disadvantage. Yes, I understood range focusing and it was great out in the field but, in the end, I sold it (at a huge loss) and have just bought the LeicaQ 2.. Day 2 and I am just so pleased. The large sensor offers huge flexibility that outweighs the restrictions of the fixed lens and the colour and sharpness are superb. So, good decision, so far.

    Thanks Thorsten for the great review.
    Since I´m a filmmaker and DP with passion for photography I love to have a photo camera with me on set. I used to bring my a7riii with my beloved 24-35mm Sigma Art.
    I love the resolution of the Sony sensor and the fact that you can crop in with no issues.
    The sony is great and very versatile. I also use it for documentary type video projects on events and conventions and its great for that.
    The only thing I don´t like is the fact that is very big and heavy to carry alongside with a bigger film camera.
    So I was searching for a camera setup to replace it.
    With the Q2 I found it. The only thing I miss would be a mic input for a little better audio quality. But the internal mic is ok for atmo and a bit of statements when shooting video.
    First I was not willing to pay that much more for a camera with a fixed lens and no inputs at all. But after I tested it out, shot with it and saw the results I ordered one. Due to the smaller size with the lens, the button layout, placing of the viewfinder and that ultra quick shutter mechanism, its a totally different shooting experience.
    What I also noticed is that the shutter of the Q2 and I guess also the Q1, feels so much faster than on everything I shot on before.
    I´m not talking about the shutter speed but the time the camera takes to trigger the shutter. With my sony I miss shots regularly because it takes a fragment of a nano second to long to snap a picture. With the leica you just press it and nail it every time.
    I don´t know what else to say, but there is something special that sets these lenses and cameras with that red dot apart from other brands. Altough Leica is expensive its worth it for me, my work and my clients.

    Thank you and this is a wonderful camera and nice review. But it is unfortunate that all reviewers repeat Leicas Marketing Message that you get a 35,50 and 70mm by cropping. But this is just a crop of a 28mm picture. The perspective is very different, and you get a completely different picture especially at 50/75 mm. If you mainly use 28/35mm, you are probably ok, but when you use 50mm and longer regularly you need to be prepared for very different results (not because of pixels, but because of perspective).

    • @tomrose2086
      @tomrose2086 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      YOu don't get a differnet perspective. You get different framing. Perspective is determined entirely by where you stand and the relative positions of the elements in your image. The focal length detgermines only how much you capture in your frame. The 35, 50 and 75 mm crops give exactly the same image/perspective as if you had used those focal lengths.
      The drawback is that you lose a ot of pixels, especially for the 75mm crop. No problem for the 35mm (30Mp) and 50mm is still fine for most purposes (15Mp) but you might struggle to print large from the 6.6Mp of a 75mm crop.

    Great review and explanation.
    Why I chose the Leica Q over the Q2
    Q2 Buffer is terrible
    Although better firmware, low light performance on 47MP is worse.
    Don't need 4K video.
    Don't need more than 24 MP (sweet spot for FF) - (would love to own a M9)
    So that is why I bought the Q (P- extra battery and nice strap, stealthy)

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the 24MP would be a reason. But if one can't sleep because you keep dreaming of the Q2, it wouldn't work. But I agree, the Leica Q is still a very valid choice.

    I have an M10 with a 35mm Summicron 1.4 lens. The Q2 looks so good I’m tempted to “downgrade”. There’s no waterproofing and awkward battery change on my M10. The Q2 is also half the price of my M10 setup.

    I couldn't agree more about your comments about prints and more megapixels, the more, the better and those aren't big prints (LOL). The biggest I print to is 40"x60" from my Sigma SD1 Merrill and the detail holds up beautifully and the look on people's faces when they see a HD Acrylic is worth it. Wouldn't mind having a Leica though 😉

  • @sensescaper
    @sensescaper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks Thorsten. I have such a terrible mash-up of equipment, I am thinking of selling it all now - especially as most of it is not especially valuable but takes up a huge amount of room. After film - my photography became 'stale'. Using a medium format camera - I was very careful about 12 shots on a roll. With greater memory card capacity - that has gone. As soon as you said in the video "I became almost thinking I should not be wasting megapixels" I was much more interested. I am no longer interested in lugging equipment about or worrying about packing everything to take. I would like just one little device that makes me feel the same ripple of excitement I had when I bought an Olympus OM1 in 1982 and got the first roll of developed Kodachrome64 back from the lab. My second career has been a struggle to establish this last few years - but I now feel ready to start documenting my work properly and sharing it.

    Why do you want to work the Leica Q2 way?
    The camera world ranges from 8x10 lens board, film board & bellows > Rollei 2-lens look-down med format > SLR 35mm thru rangefinder M-4 > Ricoh GRIII screen image finder > point and shoot
    I assume Leica products are at the high-end of quality & design but that does not answer the question of which style of work corresponds to which camera
    A Leica M was my camera, I could focus that camera on anything in any light & I had one funky lens that would retract into the camera
    I sold it when I decided to go digital and bought a succession of Canon & Sony cameras which had zoom lenses and were pocketable
    As it happens I take landscape, architectural, a sort of agricultural street photography, and details of things like gardens, boats
    I like to capture detail in a long perspective
    I like to make big prints
    I think this means that my Leica would be a full-frame mirrorless 47MP through-the-lens viewfinder with a rangefinder focus which has a screen that folds out in various ways to provide look-down look-sideways look-up composition with a Leica-quality zoom lens
    I am thinking the Leica Q2 could be a start, complemented by a Fujifilm GFX-100
    Any enlightenment will be welcome

      @@andreathode3782 The RX1RII has not caught up with it's siblings, the A7 series and APSC series scubas the A6600. But it's all down to personal choice, I have five Sony cameras from when I changed from cannon a long time ago including the AR7II and have never like the RX1RII simply because they put such a poor viewfinder which I considered to be the most essential after the sensor. I think the Q2 will be my next acquisition not only because I want a Leica but the Q2 is the best travel camera for me. I haven't followed the discussion about the JPG's that much, because at that point profiles were missing for the camera in Lightroom and Capture One Pro, and who buys a 47MP camera to shoot JPG straight out of the camera?
      The DNG are rich and easy to work with, and as any new model of a camera (which usually implies a new sensor), one have to spend some weeks getting the look to the style one find is ones own.

    I’m a big fan of this channel however when you crop you’d still be missing out on the magnification effect and hence you’d not have the same bokeh. So when you say it works, you mean that the only change is omitting the rest of the photo and getting a fraction of the resolution you paid for?! Or does the camera have a trick up its sleeve? like software editing...

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that is right. The digital crop is a good idea, but Leica have some problems convincing users that it's ok to get "less than you paid for". That is the weakness in the concept, despite 52MP, and then of course that a true 75mm lens will give a different look. But with the Q2 you get portability and no lens change. It's a choice,a nd I find that often I wanted more than I cropped; so great that the entire file is in the camera.

Are there any differences by shooting photos in fx. the 75mm mode and cropping the picture in Photoshop in the post? I guess it will be difficult to controle the DOF with a lens that basically is a 28mm.

    Thank you for nice and thoughtful videos and manuals. However I would be grateful if you could reply to my probably stupid question: Leica cameras are famous for their capacity to capture true light and colours. Once it is so, why do you focus on processing of pictures by the use of Lightroom, etc?... Actually the final goal of any enhancement is clear, but its outcome is questionable in terms of missing original Leica features. What do you think?

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When the camera shoots DNG/raw, the file is basically a recording of all the sensor data. This is imported and translated via Lightroom or Capture One, and usually that is somewhat flat but has all the data: So you can adjust it a bit or a lot and get the final picture.
      The other possibility is to have the camera do a JPG file, which is a final image. Depends if you like that one.

    Thorsten, you are missing the biggest bug ever: Sensor dust in a 'closed cam'.. And even in this second gen, it's all the same. DUST ON THE SENSOR. (Cover the mic holes on the top of the flash mount.)

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not a very widespread problem in the Leica Q first generation, and I haven't heard of any on the Q2 yet. Is the microphone holes the way it gets in, you know for sure? Good trick then. But I would think it's already in the camera when it leaves the factory in the cases where there's dust on the sensor.

      @@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Sure Thorsten, that's where the dust comes in and even I heard the Q's already have free of charge sensor dust from factory, the most is entering through the mic hole.
      It's building up over time, so not all dust comes from Leica factory itself. It's a widely known problem and also where the problem occurs. So my question is when it's that known a problem and reviewers and the few owners of of a Q2 already are reporting everything remains the same.... to my eyes it's a bit of a scam from Leica's side.

    Thank, informative video. However, with one lens and one depth of field graduation on the lense (I’m old enough to have had all my prime lenses with a depth of field graduation on them, and don’t I miss them today as they don’t have them even on the primes), when one crops digitally as you change focal length, I would think that the same depth of field at any (digitally) changed focal length from original, 35mm, 50mm etc... the depth is the same at any “chosen” focal length are the same at a given aperture. In real fixed focal length lenses the wide lens (say 28mm) has more depth of field than a 75mm lens, how does that work on this camera? If I’m understanding well, at any given digitally changed focal length one gets the same depth of field at at a given f stop (say it’s f4) no matter the focal length. Did you try that one out? I’m a Leica cary on everyday shooter (even though my “old” Fuji X100T is my 1st street choice, but has the typical digital flaw of not having a depth of field graduation ON the lens to do zone focusing) and a Nikon D850s as street/studio workhorse (also without depth of field graduation) and 99% studio Phas One IQ3. I would love to get the Q2, if someone would confirm or explain how depth of field is taken care of in a digitally changed focal length. Again thanks for the video, I can tell you also have a sweet spot for Leica (but no SL or R ;-). Keep safe, but stay imaginative. André

Flash sync for studio use and stabilisation for street photography. It’s an excellent camera. I also have the Fuji x100f which is also wonderful. You do notice the full frame quality of the q2 compared with the Fuji. But in reality, when printing anything up to about 700mm on longest edge the difference isn’t noticeable. Also I use a lens adapter on the Fuji to get a tighter image. The quality from the Fuji with that much lighting is certainly good enough. I am not putting much pressure on dynamic range. It is more about the smoothness of graduations. The Leica and Fuji aren't far apart. During these lockdowns I have just bought the Leica S system. A brand new 007 which had been sitting on a dealer's shelf for years. Also three lenses second hand from a rental company which couldn't rent them often because at the time the camera wasn't compatible with C1Pro. So now I have CS lenses and a 37mp sensor.
