    Again, this video was NOT designed to be an underwater sound test under controlled lab conditions. We discovered the sound issues it AFTER it was filmed. The video was and still is designed to compare the latest trolling motors from an end-user standpoint. We're merely reporting what we experienced. It was not a "sound test".
    The Ultrex was not a new model, so it was not included. This only included the new motors introduced at ICAST 2019. Thank you.

      Ok I get it, but I was left wondering why you did not have an Ultrex in your "test comparison" for a baseline.

    FINALY. Someone compares the underwater noise of trolling motors. I'd like to hear a comparison of ALL motors within a given price range or feature set, EVEN it it's out of the water just comparing in the open air. With under 5HP electric outboards (much more popular in Europe) it's common to see them displayed side by side, where you can spin them up. You can't turn them, (let's stay out of the prop folks) but you can compare one to another. The difference in noise is often huge from brand to brand.

  • @lowrance
    @lowrance 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Thanks for the recent trolling motor comparison review, including Ghost. Glen, To be clear, your review is comparing pre-production models, and that should certainly be noted. We’ve been quite clear that Lowrance will not start shipping Ghost until later this year, and it’s currently on schedule for November delivery. Providing comparison tests on products that are not yet being produced for consumer often sends the wrong message, and that’s certainly the case here. Thanks for giving us the chance to comment on this. There are a number of other factors that could have led to the difference in noise that you’ve shown - microphone distance, angle, power control, etc. - but there’s no need to go into that here. We’ll simply let the final production Ghost do the talking, rather than the pre-production model that was shown at ICAST, several months before production.
    Pro anglers and weekend warriors tested our motor in the real world and were told to run it HARD. There were several thousand
    hours logged and specific test results that were gathered. We have confidence in this motor and we are backing it with a 3-year warranty, plus a lifetime warranty on the lower composite shaft.

    • @bassresource
      @bassresource  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Lowrance,
      Actually, this was indeed a production model. When I asked Mike Iaconelli, who demonstrated the Ghost for us, “So when is this going to be available?” he replied “So this thing is being launched this week, ICAST 2019. In the next couple of weeks, you're going to see select retailers getting it.” You can see the proof in this video: th-cam.com/video/CW5EfDigkSc/w-d-xo.html
      So yes, the unit in the video is a production model.
      But let’s just pretend for a moment it wasn’t. You’re saying it will be available in November. Note that when we shot the MotorGuide model that same day, they said theirs wasn’t shipping until January 2020 - several months after yours.
      By your reasoning, theirs was less further along in development than yours, yet theirs was the quietest motor of all. So that certainly voids your argument.
      And finally, the videos were shot at the same distance away from the motors, with the same camera, at the same speeds, etc. All of that info is repeated several times in the comment section below this video.
      All that said, this video was not intended to bash Lowrance in any way whatsoever. In fact, if you watch the whole thing, it depicts many of the cool, innovative features that Lowrance is introducing to the world. Lowrance has a very long, solid history of making great products, and I’m sure the Ghost will be no different. The smart engineers at Lowrance will ensure it.
      It would be great if you took the time to view and comment on the Ghost review video I posted here: th-cam.com/video/CW5EfDigkSc/w-d-xo.html which I’m certain you’ll like!
      Thanks!

      I purchased the Ghost just a week ago. The motor is far superior to the Ultrex and much much quieter. My motor does not sound like the test motor at all. I also like the optional 3 in 1 nose cone with side and down scan that installs so easy. At last I can have structure scan on my trolling motor without rigging something that can easily be broken. There is zero point on having structure scan on the TM if your view is from the transom!!

    Excellent comparison on all these new trolling motors that are getting ready to hit the market. Definitely an ear opener regarding the Lowrance Ghost. I hope they work this noise issue out and I hope they're not trying to push this product out without doing all the necessary assessments to ensure the bass anglers are getting the best product out there. If they don't make the corrections necessary to dampen the sound they may want to call it the Lowrance Whiner instead of the Ghost.. Great video and thanks.

    Many comments on the ease for people with mobility issues, Minn kota Ulterra doesn't even require being near the motor to deploy and stow. Minn Kota's have served me well on my bay boats for many years. Even though these new models appear to be for bass boats, I would defiantly want to see a few years in use prior to spending $3k+ on a trolling motor. One advantage with the new Motorguide, they have been a trolling motor leader for many years.
    Talking underwater noise and the bass guys all about power poles! I had a 10' Blade on my last bay boat, which defiantly has pro's but has some con's. Debating (2) 12' Talons for new bay boat instead of Power Poles. There are underwater videos of Power pole vs Talon, unreal how loud the hydraulic motor sound is under water on the PP.

    Very interesting indeed. I was so excited to hear about a Lowrance trolling unit having been a longtime Lowrance HDS and Motorguide Xi5 user. After hearing that noise and not offering anything "game changing" with a $3k price tag... i'll likely keep using my Xi5. Thanks for the video and information. It almost sounds like my next purchase might end up being a full Garmin setup.

    Makes me glad I bought the Garmin. If I could just get the guys that make the submarine props to crank me out one. But then that shape is classified. But then that shape is larger spins slower and would probably catch more grass, but it would look cool and be way quieter.

Make sure you buy the 2 year extra warranty for 169.00 I believe and also make sure you buy the Garmin female plug for your boat. I chose Garmin because I have 3 garmin sv units with live scope already and was tired of the prop noise distortion on my screen when viewing side imagining. Not only that I got a free T54HD upgrade from my 52's SI for free as a bonus.

  • @msal4652
    @msal4652 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be fair, Glen makes it clear that the noise issue was something he found after the fact and just brought to everyone’s attention. If you’re considering one of these motors, noise is only one of many factors you have to take into consideration before you decide which you choose. If you’ve already got a $3500 Lowrance graph on the front of your boat, you aren’t considering an Ultrex even if it’s completely noiseless, unless you want to come out of pocket for a $2500-$3000 trolling motor and another $2000-$3000 for a compatible graph. Also, without additional testing, we have no idea how the noise of those motors compares to the trolling motors we all are currently using. For all we know, everyone could be as loud as the Lowrance. With all of the requests for Glen to test, it probably safe to say we don’t know. If you have the money to buy one of these high end motors, just do it and go catch some fish. I guarantee you still can regardless of which you choose. For myself, I have a 20 foot Phoenix with a 80 pound Fortrexx and will be getting the Lowrance Ghost and and Elite 9 ti 2 soon. I considered the Ultrexx because I have Humminbird electronics, but the upgradeability of the ghost and wireless connectivity of the new Lowrance electronics made the switch easy. I can catch fish now and am sure I’ll be able to catch fish with the Ghost.

    I recently fished with a guy that has a new Ghost and it was really quiet above the water, and I just watched BLATS video on his Ultrex and it sounds really noisy above the water,
    so like the other comments I would love to see an under water test between the Ultrex and the Ghost.

    No Lowrance for me. I pre-ordered the Garmin. I will respond to this video as unbiased as I can be.
    The Motorguide made a clicking sound. That tells me that there's a balance issue with the motor or shaft. The turning of the motor is quieter than the Garmin.
    The Garmin is SUPER quiet when running in one direction. But when turning the motor, it makes a squeal which, to my ears, is due to a seal or gasket or o-ring that was not lubricated properly. Again, a quality control issue that needs to be addressed. Another thing the squeaking could be caused by is the design of the shaft-stop. You adjust how much of the shaft goes in the water from underneath, instead of from on top. That's a big deal for me, but the remote and the wireless foot pedal are a fair trade for the extra noise.
    Lowrance. I knew I didn't want the Lowrance after seeing their half-assed effort on their version of LiveScope. It was worse than the first version of Pan Optix. So they didn't bother to perfect the technology before they released it to the public. That tells me that they are greedy and don't care about the customer. They just tossed it out there hoping their fanboys will bite.
    The Ultrex is just as loud as the Lowrance, or worse.

    First off, Lowrance you blew it with that noise issue. But, most important, I would NEVER buy first generation from any of these manufacturers. Historically, anyone (Pros) will be test dummies and the bugs and issues will not be worth it. Wait a year or two...
