Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial ! It was like watching over your shoulder 😄 ! I notieced you didn't cut some yellow roots ....are they still useful for the phal ? My boyfriend has just offered me a new one in full bloom and I was afraid of converting it right now.....won't the flowers fall ? Your latest purchase is a pure wonder 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Hi Catherine and thanks so much for your sweet comment! I'm so glad to hear this video helped you! :) The yellow roots are still fine and viable for the plant. They just haven't had any light, so they stay yellow like this until they do receive some light. I've converted many orchids to water culture, and converting them doesn't affect the bloom cycle. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Dear OW! I just love your videos. They have been most helpful. Our orchids here up North!! ON Canada are double de price and limited in selection. I just purchased one today with lots of roots and leaves and blooms and buds! It came in bark but prepared it all for H2O culture. I did not have calmag and salt for the watering cleaning: hope this will still work. It’s a bit challenging to make the decision if roots are clean enough for H2O but I will give it a try to see. After a week, or two, I will see if rehoming it in bark is best I will do so. I am hoping it won’t die! One I am trying to save from dying: it has no more roots! It’s in bark, in a warm room with lots of humidity and light. It’s hard to see root growth in bark; any suggestions? I am starting! Just this week! But really finding interest in them! Thank you for your book reference and end comment. Also find your crystal crosses so beautiful ;) Yours sincerely, Julie Seeking the truth, goodness, and beauty!
Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I’m currently living in Korea, where I don’t speak the language and had to take my 4 phalaenopsis orchids I’ve had for the last 3 years (a completely newbie plant and orchid grower) to a local orchid grower for help. With the help of a Korean friend, he’s converted it from moss to water culture and I was really worried. But having watched your video, I’m feeling a lot better, and will watch your other videos to help my new water culture orchids. Your descriptions and focusing in and out on the root system is excellent; and your voice is clear and cues really helpful. Thank you, bless you and continue the great work!
This certainly seems to be a wonderful approach in keeping healthy orchids. I've been rescuing mostly phalaenopsis orchids (small variety) from my local grocer, just now saw this video, and decided to do water culture with all of them. Wish me luck. :)
Hi and thanks so much for watching! If you're new to the water culture method, I have a playlist that will give you lots of information about it, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/zFPrQ962JNo/w-d-xo.html Happy growing and I wish you lots of success!
That "stringy part" is the actual root. The rest--the fleshy thick part that turns green when watered--is phylum and it absorbs the water and conducts it to the root over time.
Kroger - yes.. I have bought a number of clearance Orchids there, most around $5.99 a piece. They always seem to hide them around the corner, away from the regular priced Orchards. One was at the end of it's flowering, but a few weeks later it started to flower again! Keep up all the great tips, Ms. Orchard Whisperer :-)
My husband works at Kroger so he comes with $1 orchids all the time!! I’ve recently started converting over to water and they’re so doing so much better honestly
That is a beautiful Phal !! 💗 I find it easier to remove the plant out of that kind of plastic pot by cutting carefully 3 or 4 slits at the side the pot using my thinner scissors to avoid damaging the roots. I also use a twizzer or forcep to remove the very packed moss.
Thank you very much for this very well made and detailed tutorial. I’m going to convert my phalaenopsis orchid in water culture and this will help me a lot! Can’t wait for part 2 of your video 😁
Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words and your positive feedback! It helps me to know which videos interest my subscribers, so thanks for letting me know this helped you! Have a great day and happy growing! :)
I love Orchids, but despite my fairly green thumb on everything else. I kill every single one, so much that I just gave up purchasing them. Perhaps with these instructional. I can try again. Thanks so much!!!😁
Notice that she mentions not to allow the stem to touch the water - only the roots. That is why some people's orchids die - the stems were touching the water.
I have 2 Phals thaat haven't bloomed in years and they look dehydrated. So I soak them in water periodically so the leaves get turgid. That's all I can do for now. I just subscribed.
How do you decide which phal you put in water culture and which to leave in moss.?Love your videos and appreciate all of your knowledge you give us. Thank you.
Hi Mary and thanks so much for your sweet comment! This is a really good question...I'll go over this in my follow-up video on this orchid that I plan on doing the next few days. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
In tropical forests, the orchids are attached to the larger plants and hang upside down where their roots are exposed to frequent rain. They are natural inhabitants of rain forests.
Where do you get the soft liners? What kind of water do you use? I notice you use some out of a jug, just to rinse moss off the roots. If you use distilled water, doesn't that get expensive? Thank you, Pat H., Cordele, GA.
Hello, I have a tiny phal that I suspect was a keiki. I thought she was going well in her bark mix but I took her out when I noticed she just wasn't growing like the rest. She has 1 root that is about 1,/2 inch long and another that about 1/8. I placed her in moss and she is doing well. I would like to try her in water culter. I figured, from watching other videos that she needs a strip of cloth placed over the root and the end of the cloth down in the water to hydrate the orchid? I would love to try this . What are your thoughts?
Hi Kristina! If it were my orchid, I would keep it in moss since it's doing well in moss. I've never tried water culture with a strip of cloth the way you've described, so I don't know if I would do that. If the orchid is happy, just keep doing what it's used to. Happy growing! :)
I do too, actually curved nail scissors adhering to the soft plastic in a zig zag fashion carefully avoiding roots even right down to the bottom if there are roots poking out
Shall I keep it in a transparent container or I can keep it in an opaque one ? & when can I start adding powder fertiliser to my orchid after transferring to water? Thanks 😊
Yes, I found the link to the part 2 follow-up! :) Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/yi4U0f54RjU/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching and have a great day! Amy
Oh my..,so in love with the colour of this one. you really have a gift and talent to share the world. thanks lot for sharing it :) really love your channel!
I took my Phal orchid out of the moss and put it in Miracle Gro Orchid Potting Bark. It has all of it's roots inside the bark.. Should it have some roots sticking out of the top of the "soil".. Like it did when I first bought it?
Actually, if you purchase an orchid with roots sticking out of the top and you decide to repot it, try to make sure those roots are still sticking out of the top of the pot once the orchid has been repotted. They are called air roots, and are necessary for the plants survival. Epiphyte orchids use their roots to absorb nutrients from the air. They also absorb moisture and get the carbon dioxide they need to thrive directly from the air. This unique root system uses the humidity around it to get the water and nutrients it needs to survive.

Hi Breena! Thank you so much, my friend! I was so happy to find this phal! (For $9 I couldn't leave her in the store! :) I haven't noticed a fragrance, not yet anyway. She looks so much like a species phal, I'm wondering if a fragrance will develop. I'll keep you posted! :) Have a great day!
That's a very informative video. All your videos are, as a matter of fact. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! I am currently keeping my rootless Phal in FWC. And noticing some good change. Whats your opinion about Orchid seedlings that come in flasks? I have a flask with may be 10 Phal seedlings, some are really grown in the flask. But before i deflask them, i need to know all possibilities. I am understanding from different write-ups that, seedlings need a lot of water, need to remain moist. And I was wondering if I could put them in Water Culture!! Pls let me know your opinion. And also, if you could guide me a bit about how to care for them once they are out of their cozy flask! Many thanks.
Hi Mary and thanks so much for your sweet comment! :) It's always so nice hearing from you! I'm really happy to hear that your Phal is doing well in FWC...I enjoy hearing success stories! :) I have never grown seedlings that come in flasks. All of the orchids I grow are mature plants when I buy them. But I think I would choose New Zealand sphagnum moss to grow them in. It's a great media for baby plants and miniatures. The moss also retains nutrients well, and that is an important aspect of growing baby orchids. I wish you much success with your deflasking, and please keep me posted! This is an interesting topic! Have a great day and happy growing!
Orchid Whisperer thank you so much for your opinion and I will do that! Sphagnum moss it is!!! I'm planning to deflask them when I see the gel is reduced and all the seedlings have good size. I saw a video where the grower leaves the seedlings until almost all gels are absorbed/used by the keikis. I'll keep you updated. Many thanks. Happy growing to you too ! 💟
I tried this method with multiple orchids and I just have no luck with that. Roots starts rotten over time or they start to dry out and I ended up with a rootless orchid:(
Hello, thank you for sharing, could I ask, how much cal mag and epsom salts you use per gallon? in the video you mention 70 parts per million but how much of each (cal mag and epson respectively)
Hi and thanks so much for watching! I have a playlist I created about water culture that will help you, it has my water culture fertilizing routine as well: th-cam.com/play/PLa27IDqybK0ERRm6sQBo-Pb4pRsUeMYOk.html Happy growing!
Hi when you washed the roots off yo said you used a little bit of epsom salts and what sounded like cowmak? What is that cowmak , never heard of it, but I'm in the UK so it's probably called something totally different.
I just repotted several of my orchids in the orchiata and no root shock! My rescue orchid that lost almost all of its roots was trying to grow another Spike so I cut it off because it's still only has about 5 roots and it's newest leaf is deep purple on the back I've given it a soak in Epsom salt but haven't been able to find the Cal-mag locally so I'm going to have to order it would it be safe to do my better grow fertilizer with a little bit of Epsom salt to give it more magnesium or do you think it would be too much salt and burn the roots?
Hi Stephanie! I'm so glad to hear that your orchids are doing so well in the Orchiata! :) That's great news! I would give small amounts of fertilizer and alternate that with small amounts of Epsom salts with this orchid since it's just now starting to grow new roots. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Hi and thank you for the blessing! 😇 I have a video on my water culture playlist about water culture levels...its What You Should Know Before You Try Water Culture. There are lots of topics on that playlist that will help you. Happy growing!
My Phalaenopsis has no roots but a few air roots and has some white thin strand roots starting at the bottom since it has been in water. Is it feasible that this orchid can be saved?
Hello good day, may I ask if all orchids can be converted to this water system. I’m from the Philippines and I am new to orchids I bought one last week and the flower bulbs are opened now but the leaves are turning yellow and falling off please help.
Hi and thanks so much for watching! Water culture is a really challenging growing method for orchids, and I don't recommend it for beginners. I have a playlist if you're curious to see how I grow mine in water culture...here's the link: th-cam.com/video/zFPrQ962JNo/w-d-xo.html Happy growing!

I just love her so much and very well versed in orchids
I could listen to her all day !
Beautiful orchids roots are super healthy. Most important for an orchid. Thank you. Can’t wait to see the progress.
Thank you, my friend! Happy growing! :) Amy
Part of my tools when cleaning moss/media off roots in a pair of long-handle tweers. They work great.
Love that orange color. I recently found one at Lowe’s for 1$ due to the pot being broken. I happily brought that baby home. Tfs!
I am turning over my orchids this weekend to water. Studying your videos. God bless....have a great weekend!

Very true, also, the phylum absorbs the water, but never releases it... not good...happy growing 🌱
I've heard the fleshy part is also called velamen!

Why didn’t you use a craft knife to cut the pot open straight away? Less likely to damage the plant
Craig Famly was wondering the same ..I use cheap small craft scissors to remove the plastic pot that u gonna throw out anyway..🙄
Or remove from container first then wet the moss. The moss expanded after you water it and make it so hard to remove it. ??
I do too, actually curved nail scissors adhering to the soft plastic in a zig zag fashion carefully avoiding roots even right down to the bottom if there are roots poking out
Shall I keep it in a transparent container or I can keep it in an opaque one ? & when can I start adding powder fertiliser to my orchid after transferring to water?

I would give small amounts of fertilizer and alternate that with small amounts of Epsom salts with this orchid since it's just now starting to grow new roots. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
How much water do I use? Thank u. Many blessings
Hi and thank you for the blessing! 😇 I have a video on my water culture playlist about water culture levels...its What You Should Know Before You Try Water Culture. There are lots of topics on that playlist that will help you. Happy growing!
Those stringy things are the actual roots. The green fleshy tube covering it is a protective cover which actually can photosynthesize.
Thank you 🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Thanks
May I know what is the mixture of the bottle of water you used. Couldn't hear you clearly. Thanks
Is it healthier for orchids to be in water culture or in orchid mediums (bark/moss, etc)?
Depends on the orchid, you’ll soon find out by watching it closely
My Phalaenopsis has no roots but a few air roots and has some white thin strand roots starting at the bottom since it has been in water. Is it feasible that this orchid can be saved?
Hello good day, may I ask if all orchids can be converted to this water system. I’m from the Philippines and I am new to orchids I bought one last week and the flower bulbs are opened now but the leaves are turning yellow and falling off please help.
How will u fertilize in this method? Thank You😀
Hi! I have a playlist on my channel about fertilizing. I fertilize them all the same...whether they are in media or water culture. Happy growing! 🌷
So does water culture mean they live in water forever and never get replanted? Sorry im new to this 🙃
thinking the same thing?
Hi I am one of your subscribers I want to know what kind of Fertilizer you are using for baby Orchid and for big Please let me know if you can thanks
Did you see Emaams youtube with the fertilizer and she also put epsom salt and Cal-Mag+ orchid bloom fertilizer.
I'm confused. Shouldn't you have waited until the blooms faded?
It's better to wait till the Phals blooms are fully open, but after that, it's fine to repot. They just have to be kept watered.
How prevented orchids flower not fall before bloom? Mine first few flowers are fall off.
I love that sink,
I am a beginner PL let me know what is water culture ? Do u add anything to water?
Hi and thanks so much for watching! Water culture is a really challenging growing method for orchids, and I don't recommend it for beginners. I have a playlist if you're curious to see how I grow mine in water culture...here's the link: th-cam.com/video/zFPrQ962JNo/w-d-xo.html
Happy growing!
