    The Opv80 was designed for the Bofors 57mm but the bofors 40mm is also suitable if not preferable because of better anti aircraft capability.
    Plus my idea of splitting one harpoon launcher in half so they fit is pretty cool.
    The cost is also for through life sustainability.

    Make our OPV more heavily armed. They all don't need a helicopter hanger. Move the front main gun forward put a 76mm high velocity gun instead off the 57mm. And put a 11 cell RIM-116 searam missiles system on the front behind the main gun. Put 2x2 anti ship missiles in the middle off the boat. Raise the helicopter hanger and Put 12 sea captor missiles there instead and a decoy system.And put 2x2 torpedoes tubes at the side lower deck. And have a CIWS close in weapon system at the back. have half of the OPV built for original purpose with the helicopter hanger and the other half as a attack class OPV. Start heavily arming our ships Australia. Our navy is small enough. We need to bring the firepower when it matters.

    Dear DoD and RAN, I see room for an 8 cell Mark 41 VLS and 2 Quad Harpoon launchers. A slight adjustment and a 57mm Bofors gun mount forward of the VLS should be possible and then you have a corvette almost as well armed as an Anzac Frigate. Do it. You need it. If you want patrol boats create a Coast Guard. The OPV is a waste of a platform and a size overkill for the pissy role it’s currently being assigned.

    • @Harldin
      @Harldin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you see room for a CEAFAR 2 Radar, CEAMOUNT illuminatersl, Sea Giraffe Target indication Radar all of which you will need to be able to fire a ESSM or a Harpoon, You put all that on a 80m Hull as well as the MK 41, Harpoon Launchers and bigger gun and you are going to create top weight issues and you would have to waste the Flight Deck to fit it all.
      The Anzacs are 40m longer, over twice the displacement and they can’t even be fitted with a Phalanx due to top weight issues. Corvettes are useless to Australia as you cannot get all the weapons,, sensors and CMS and give them anywhere near enough Range to be of any use.
      Do you know why we have to replace the Armidale class 10-15 years early?
      Because they are worn out from the Navy having to use them as Offshore Patrol Vessels when in reality they are only Coastal Patrol Vessels. Its taken 50odd years but the lesson has finally learnt the lesson having an Attack class PB destroyed in harbour during a cyclone should have taught us.
      We need large Patrol Vessels with Aviation capabilities due to the sheer distances involved not pissy little tinnies we have been using.

      Use your brain will ya, if they went to that much trouble they may as well build a frigate or a destroyer, its purpose is border protection not to fight ww3, our other ships will do that.

    • @wattlebough
      @wattlebough 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mick Warnie I see a flight deck for taking Romeo Seahawk helicopters. The only other ships in the RAN with flight decks are frigates and destroyers. Making the Arafura a “light frigate” could save costs on hulls while maintaining similar punch to the Anzac frigates. Talking of WW3, chinese navy has a vessel off the coast of WA mapping the Indian ocean sea floor, which will come in handy when they deploy submarines to Exmouth. That enough brain power for you chief?

    • @wattlebough
      @wattlebough 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mick C Extend the hulls another ten meters and place the missiles forward of the flight deck. Really the Navy shouldn’t be filling the role of a coast guard. I think we should take a leaf out of the US’s book in this case. Let the Navy be all about warfare and let a coast guard deal with illegal immigration and foreign vessels fishing inside the eez.

The simple truth is Australia also requires OPVs too, as using frigates to patrol the EEZ, the fishing grounds, is a expensive overkill.... have half of the OPV built for original purpose with the helicopter hanger and the other half decked out as a attack class OPV.
      The navy is supposed to be our front line off defence we will only have 9 hunter class 3 air warfare destroyers and 10 Arafura-class OPV 6 collins class submarine by 2030s and still be waiting for the 12 barracuda class attack submarines get built. Even if it's only 5 heavily armed OPV out off the 10 built. It would make a difference for our navy. Especially when we do have some off our ships deployed overseas. I think you forget China have 700 warships mate. Having small heavily armed OPV could relieve some stress on coverage for our larger ships and air force. And can bring a little bit more security when our larger ships do get deployed. A OPV can knock out a few big ships and submarine if armed right with the right tools.

    • @Nathan-ry3yu
      @Nathan-ry3yu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carisi2k11 I agree with that 100% Australia should have atleast 12 heavily armed Corvettes minimum for a OPV. Or heavily arm our Arafura-class. Theirs no point having lightly armed OPV in the times we now living in. Lightly armed OPV is a waist off time and personal for our navy. With only 9 large frigates when built and 3 air force destroyers and 6 collins class submarine till 2040s. It isn't enough to cover our geographical area even with our air force that don't even have long range bombers. When our ships deployed overseas. We left with a large undefended area.. humanitarian relief and iligal refugee piracy and terrorism is a job for border force and police not for RAN. RAN needs to be more heavily armed to protect Australia sovereignty from broader threats if and when it matters. Even the UK they have sevral types from destroyers the Type 45. Type 26 frigates and Type 31E corvette.and they have much less coverage to protect too. Australia seems to go for lightly armed vessels will be our downfall if a war breaks out in the pacific. A heavily armed OPV can do a lot off damage and can defend if armed correctly. I can't see how the Arafura class OPV will serve our navy interest if they too lightly armed..it's just a waist off RAN personal, that couldn't do squat to help the others if and when it matters. 10 useless large boats that would have to run if had a face off with a heavily armed ship

    RAN is pretty lame with these OPVs. This ship is too large for its underwhelming armament which I hope will not be a solitary bushmaster machine canon but at very worst a 40 mm BAE auto canon with 3P shells. These are what was meant to be fitted and have some reasonable antiaircraft ability and airburst shells for defence against swarm attack. Suggestions of VLS are poorly considered as that would require CEAFAR or Aegis radar and systems which are suitable for larger ships, but the vessels could have quad packed Harpoon Antiship missiles or some kind of containerised modular naval strike missile system. RAN leadership is void of any forethought and should have gone with 95m BAE OPV. These are larger and there’s more space for helicopter landing as well as armament and some have been fitted out as capable corvettes as seen by three vessels originally built for Brunei but now in service with the Indonesian forces as corvettes with 76mm main gun, Antiship missiles, torpedo launchers, two 30 mm canon, Sea wolf missile and flight deck. The vessel is an OPV but comparable to a small frigate in armament and has 30 knots speed. This all increases crew size but even if we just had a decent 40 mm BAE canon and antiship missiles it’s got to give these OPVs a bit more of flexibility than these expensive and under-armed constabulary vessels. It’s about time the RAN stopped doing constabulary duties (other than anti piracy) and the Border Security was resourced to do it so our navy can focus on defence. We need vessels that have greater flexibility and genuine combat abilities
