    Data on the Visby-class top speed is incorrect. Around 40 knots is the official numbers. However, a few years back I was visiting friends in the archepilagio of stockholm and we had heard that its sister ship, HSwMS Helsingborg was in the neighbourhood we set out in my friends boat to try to get a glimpse of it. We found her steaming out to sea at what we only can assume was all ahead flank. Now, my friends boat can do 55-58 knots in calm seas. We held a steady speed of around 50 knots and we couldn’t catch up with it. After almost an hour we decided to give up an returned. It is a SERIOUSLY fast ship.

      @@trevorlawrence310 Agreed. Understating, sometimes grossly understating, performance abilities is routine in military circles. Years ago I used to be in ASW (anti submarine warfare) as a pilot and even we were not informed of the true capabilities of other friendly nations' subs. For example it was quietly rumoured that certain subs that were said to be capable of X knots underwater were actually capable of well over twice that.

      Holy shit your friend must be rich if he decided to chase this ship for an hour at 50knots. Sorry you didn't catch it because that must have been a sick gasoline bill.

    Only a 57mm gun, no air defence etc comments.. First of all that 57 is quite impressive for it's caliber and fully capable at shooting down incoming missiles with it's 3P ammo thats programmable in the breach for different functions against different targets. And for serious offensive capabilities those RBS-15 anti ship missiles is among the best there is (for it's size which is comparable to a Harpoon). Those RBS-15's can be launched with targeting data from other sources (aircraft, coastal radar etc) fed to the Visby via datalink so it doesn't have to use active sensors and reveal itself. And it also carry torpedoes, mostly for anti submarine warfare but usable in some other scenarios as well so enough with the "Only a 57mm gun" comments please :)

    What is sad is the fact that our navy and air forces, can not abide the thought of any new acquisition not being big fast and beautiful regardless of the fact that it delivers on its projected performance. For the cost of one of our new carriers and/or submarines we could buy about fifty to seventy of the VISBY Class Corvettes. And if you think aboUT it abilities, it could perform one mission our scenario planners seem to have forgotten. Conveying! In any war of the future, we must be able to to dominate the sea lanes if we are to control China's intention to turn the South China Sea into a private lake. The VISBY Class can more than meet that need. Did you note the UAV helicopter drone in the video. Imagine several dozen of these with some form of AI capabilities that could interdict Chinese land based missiles meant to kill our first line ships, and carriers. Now granted the present ocupent of the White House would scrube any such option even though he is supposed to be the best Wheeler Dealer, who gets the most value for the taxpayers dollar. We might even get a licence from the Swedish Crown for manufacturing all or part of the ship's in America. The point I am making is, that until such time as we regain the fine tradition of American Craftsmanship, we should buy good Craftsmanship from our allies when we find it.

    Enough with the "Only a 57mm gun" and "No air defence" comments please. That 57mm is very capable for it's caliber with it's 3P ammo that is programmable for different functions against different targets within milliseconds while the shell is in the breach before firing and is very efficient against incoming missiles (and smaller naval vessels). And for offensive power those RBS 15 anti ship missiles are among the the best there is (for it's size which is comparable to the Harpoon (and i'd choose the RBS 15 mk2 over the Harpoon any day)). The Visby can fire those RBS 15's with targeting data from other sources like aircraft or coastal radar feeding it information via datalink so it doesn't have to use any active sensors and reveal itself before launch, the launch will most likely be detected but once it's done you are back to a radar cross section of a crab pot float.. And finally it also carry torpedoes, mostly for ASW operations but still useful in some other scenarios.

    • @LegaRoSS
      @LegaRoSS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So should we compare that "very capable" gun with for example 16 cells which might be loaded with up to 64 SAMs while there are 8 more cells available for tactical land strike missiles or anti-sub rocket launched torpedoes or supersonic anti-ship ones with range 3 times RBS-15 have? 4 torpedoes vs 8 torpedoes?
