I bought the same charger as you on Amazon. I also felt the same way as you. I didn't want to spend $40 dollars for a charger when I could just open the blinds and expose my watches to the sun. But when I found a charger for $15 dollars on Amazon I decided to buy it. Great charger for those cloudy days when you need a watch charged. Great video by the way.
This is the reason why Citizen Ecodrive is daddy of them all and why Casio basically copied Citizen Solar but they still dont how to charge on any light or why Ecodrive can last double of Casio solar,my from 93’ ecodrive still works to this day but my 5600 from 2006 is dead.
My preferred method is to use a generic articulating desk lamp that will fit any standard E26 bulb. This has a few advantages over a dedicated charger if you have multiple watches: 1) You can adjust the intensity/area by simply moving the bulb closer/farther to the watches. I can usually fit 6 or 7 watches under a single bulb and still get excellent charging. 2) The bulb can be easily replaced without replacing the entire unit. 3) The lamp can be used as a regular desk lamp when you're not using it to charge watches. A dedicated charger is still more efficient for single watches, and the automatic shutoff is nice.
I got one of these a few months ago as well. I kinda love it. Its a very fast way to charge solar watches. Especially a used one from ebay that's been in a drawer for months or years and the batteries need some deep charge reconditioing.
Makes sense needing one of those for a collection like that. I always make fun of my wife when she charges her Apple Watch so I can’t get one of these for my solar powered watches lol
I’ve tried using a torch but with the rounded G shock straps that curve you can’t sit a torch on top so have to lie both sideways or set up some kind of thing to have the watch face up, my torches are too narrow to stand upright and put the watch on top facing down, just wouldn’t work, one of these type chargers is definitely the answer for me.
Good video. I bought a high output LED lamp to help charge my solar powered G-Shock watches but I found it was a waste of time as it took forever to barely charge the watch and, besides, the watch will get very hot. So, I decided to get the cool fire. It has worked very well. It charges the watches fast and they hardly get warm. But now, after two years of use, 'it's taking longer, though (I've read that LEDs do degrade over time), so, I think, is time to get a new one. I may give this charger a try.
Direct sunlight will expose your watchband to more UV light than the LED light, so using the LED light instead will potentially prolong the life of your watchband.
Interestingly both of my gshocks required charging yesterday and I thought that exposing them to the direct sun UV light for this much time will actually damage resin after some years of charging. this is interesting device, basically wireless charging pad
Great video as always! I recently picked one up as well for similar reasons, and have been using it regularly to keep some of my lesser worn solars topped off. Just wondering: what are your most worn “beaters,” which you use for work?
Great video, Greg! 👌 I'm in the same boat as you - Once looked down on the idea of needing a charging device!... But now with so many watches to wear (and committing one whole week at a time to one watch), it's getting harder. I reckon I'll pick one up! Thanks for rundown 🙏
You should mark that Video as satire, because that's what it is. Solar watches are a bit like mechanical watches, they're fine if you wear them constantly and don't have too many of them. Otherwise the maintenance (aka keep them running) turns into a hassle. That video is a good reminder why I stick to normal battery powered watches, I rather change the battery every few years (or decades) depending on the watch, usage and batt type of course. Functionality of non solar watches is usually better anyway, 'nuff said.
I just put my solar watches on my window sill for an hour or so every 3-6 months and the batteries go back to full. At least the ones I have last all winter before needing a quick recharge
@@AhmadBadshah-s1w yeah as long as they don’t get too hot. Batteries degenerate faster in too hot/too cold environments. I wouldn’t recommend placing a solar watch outside in the baking heat to recharge. I just place mine on the window sill (where the ac is on inside) for about an hour or two and that usually fully recharges them and they generally don’t need a recharge for about another 5-6 months. Of course if you wear them daily you shouldn’t really have to worry about charging
Will they charge by a regular indoor light , because I have been told that it ECO Drive & others should charge with Natural or Synthetic Light like a Electric Lamp 💡
I buy glass tempered screen protectors for my smartphone, and they come with a LED UV light that tempers the glue used to install them. I have used those lights to charge lume, but not watch. By the way your description says low UV but... the product description you linked explicitly says it's UV: "The UV Light charger have 2 levels of brightness light power output, 20,000+ Lux and 40,000+ Lux optional, Keep stay on best status and well distributed lights as sunlight to charge the eco watches." So... someone is confused, I dunno who. 😂 Anyway, I never thought of trying the UV tempering lamp I have for the screens to try and charge my Casio Waveceptor, but I guess it's worth a shot.
Yeah on that product I see no indication of "low UV" 😂 Thing's straight from China man, I wouldn't assume they're all the same... I dunno you could be right, just... a word to the wise!
I think the Amazon description is a typo or a bad translation. Any time I have seen an LED light which is made to output UV light it’s designed for that part of the spectrum. Something this cheap wouldn’t be likely to output anything but a narrow part of the spectrum, far away from UV rays. I also have a small UV flashlight and there’s a very specific way it lights up glow-in-the-dark objects or things which are also affected by black lights. This charger doesn’t do that.
@@GoodTimekeeper Welp... like I said, the light that comes with my screen protector was very cheap, but says it's using UV cured glue... maybe there is also some glue that cures using just bright light. Don't know.
Also, the write-up text on Amazon is the only place where UV is mentioned (only once). It’s nowhere else on the illustrations and nowhere on the actual packaging of the device.
Solar watches are very good, until you get too many lol. I do similar recharge witha 10$ rechargeable lantern. My only worry is if the intensity could damage the solar cell or change the dial color on dial. Cheers from Bolivia!!
I think you’re referring to the MTP-S110, which is a solar-powered diver style watch in a metal case. I have a black version and a blue version. Here’s a video I made featuring the blue version. th-cam.com/video/dazDbR2IErM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ykeeEwmEsItXMxBp
You have your collection in watch boxes. Cant you just change the lighting in a room to florescent lighting (office lighting) and bring your collection into the room to charge by light?
Converting electricity to light and then back to electricity by solar is very inefficient. Maybe it's better to put the watches in a dark place, where they go into power save mode?
@@GoodTimekeeper Yep, couldn't hurt to have a spare... took the plunge cuz I finally got myself a GA-B2100 Casioak, and also for my Waveceptor. I'm wondering how long it will take to top up from "M"...

I thought I was bad. I have about 110 watches. You turned me on to the G-Shock Squares and that was dangerous.
Nah, 110 is not bad... that's literally insane.

I do the same
Makes me laugh how Greg throws all the watches inside the drawer...😅 Minute 2:32.
I live in Scotland and have one of these chargers; there isn’t always enough sunshine. Even in summer..
Love your content, always informative and relaxing to watch.

that would be great for my Casio HDDS100-1AV which is a true solar powered watch...the watches you show I would refer to as "solar assisted" 😌
How long should you leave your watch on this for charging? Great video.. just picked up one!
Even in the winter, my G-Shocks charge has never been below high. I just keep mine on the windowsill when I'm not wearing it.

Hey Greg, does this solar watch charger come in various configurations and colors? I was thinking you could start a collection. 😜
