I wish his TV show was back on TV. those old re-runs are classic! remember when we tuned into shows every week night?? they don't do that anymore!! wait a minute, the TV has to warm up !! LOL!!
Damn, the day he was singing this, I was being born!! Also on this exact day, "What´s Going on" by Marvin Gaye was being published as a single...so if someone asks me what was happening musically when you were born, I can say "here, how about these two things?"
My mother used to sing this all the time, that's how i learned it in earliest childhood, not from either a record or radio. Not until long after her death did I wonder if she were singing it from feeling trapped by the endless grinding chores of marriage and motherhood, including making all the financial decisions for a weak and incompetent husband.
Jim Stafford had a great line about prison songs. He said, " I've never been to prison, but I wrote this song while Merle Haggard was in prison." Then you just have to hear his prison song. (On my youtube.) Oh, and of course, Johnny Cash is fantastic doing any song.
Happy Birthday Johnny!! You are remembered and loved in 2021!! RIP
שיר אסירים על הקירות. נוח על משכבך בשלום, ג'וני.
I used to sing this to the girls at my boarding school in Queenstown South Africa and they always cried. It is a very sad and evocative melody

This song is beautiful, no matter who sings it. It tells us that all a person really wants in their life is love. Jackie

When i was a kid I use to play this on the organ for my dad bc it was one of his fav songs. He would sing every verse in a deep baritone. 😍
