    Excellent video on diagnosing and figuring out this issue. I never knew about the green plug. That was super helpful. And the ohm readings were also very helpful. You should post this on the Subaru outback forum

    I think I'm having a similar problem with my Subaru which threw a P0457 so I'm gonna run some similar tests. Thanks for your video.

    Well the pump kicking off is without a doubt a ventilation issue. You may want to have the other valves checked in the area. Without proper ventilation the gasoline can't displace the air in the tank, which in turns causes pressure to build which kicks off the gas pump. Something isn't working right or is hooked up wrong.

    A cheap and useful tool for evap testing, a basic balloon. Quickly check if solenoid is leaking doing the blow test, no guessing.

    My brother, you should have a LOT more than 389 subscribers. Sincere gratitude from this viewer on TH-cam, and probably my friend who has the same vehicle at a "dealership" who wants to "replace the system" for a thousand dollars, "because.." they don't diagnose vehicle's any further than "tested, audibly functioning" at a hundred bucks an hour flat-rate?
    I never wrenched professionally, more of a managerial/customer-service type with Swedish cars, but damn. I know ridiculous when I hear it, and taking a grand from a "little old lady" whose technical skills begin and end at turning hot or cold water on and off at her kitchen-sink is just %$&#ing rude, and borderline thievery.

    There are many reports of issues connecting a scan tool to the ODBII port on an older Subaru. Apparently the pins start to get pushed out of optimal position inside the plastic that is the port. On any given day, my scan tool might not connect to the ECU on my 2001 Forester.

    awesome ! diagnosis and explanation.
    i didnt understand how this could effect performace or idle until you said that it was pressurized from vacuum.
    iam like, why my sub' running like ass it just has a stoopid vent valve code .
    but it is acting exactly like a vacuum like !!

  • @kevinautotechu1017
    @kevinautotechu1017  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The vent valve on top of the gas tank could definitely be the issue. If it isn't venting then all you're doing at the gas pump is filling up the filler neck over and over. Dropping the gas tank is a large undertaking on this vehicle so make sure your mechanic has checked everything before you ok the tank removal. Sorry I can't be of more direct assistance, some issues can only be fixed with hands on diagnostics.

    HI,
    I have the same issue as 'downtowndusky' and have replaced the same solenoid as in the video - no luck. I've also replaced the charcoal canister. blew out the lines and cleaned out the Drain Filter. Still not fixed.
    Hoping I don't have to drop the gas tank...but running out of options.
    Thanks

      you may want to check the purge valve underneath the intake. Subaru parts calls it a duty solenoid. you can check it the same way as the drain valve. this will also set the same dtc. I have had several foresters with this dtc and a faulty purge vavle, and does not set a purge valve dtc just a p1443.

    Thanks for video; I appreciate. 1. You did not mention year for car. Is this important, due to modifications? 2. I was told at the Subaru Dealer here in Brampton, Canada, that the scanner they recommend is the one that carries Subaru's software (I believe that to be b.s., but, anyway...). What's the difference to YOUR scanner? 3. How can resistance characteristics 'decay' in a solenoid?? Their Henrys should always be leveled to their individual resistance, shouldn't they? Possibly the diaphragm is not seating right, and allowing vacuum to leak, instead?

    • @stephenpollard4868
      @stephenpollard4868 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as the resistance "decaying": We do not know what the resistance was at the time of manufacture, so It may have been faulty from the get go. The real issue here is that he is not getting a proper seal. The sensor check is performed with the solenoid in the closed position (powered on) and is measuring the vacuum, so not sealing will throw this off and cause an error code.

    awesome and thorough vid! sadly I changed the vent valve and and my mechanic also changed the filler neck and said he checked the surrounding pipes and hoses around the canister for debris/clogs and he said they seemed okay. I still have the same exact problem, so I've sort of hit a dead end :-/

  • @tentse3521
    @tentse3521 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i got my vent valve replaced and still have the code popping up. i'm afraid that my purge valve also needs to be replaced from what i've been reading online. the purge valve is near the engine bay and the wording is very similar to the vent valve online in terms of shopping for parts.

    I have a 2014 Subaru crosstrek limited. Have code P1449 ( vent control filter clogging ). I replace OEM. filter with solenoid, Auto zone Vapor canister Purge solenoid, and OEM. drain valve, after that smoke test ( no leak ) and blow to tubes. After drove the car for 20 miles or less. The same code came back. What next step I should check.

  • @tonzokinawa
    @tonzokinawa 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was wondering if you knew what a P0448 would mean then? Is that usually the valve that is in the engine bay that will direct the vapors into the intake manifold?

    HI. Why smell gasoline when I filled up the gas tank. Tanks for your help.

  • @giosoccer20
    @giosoccer20 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for the reply! Someone was saying something about a "vent valve" or something on top of the gas tank itself which could be clogged and doesn't open up anymore? They were saying this is something that requires dropping the tank. could it be the problem? I do have the P1443 code and a diagnostic receipt said: open or short circ. condition, poor elec. connection, or failed vent ctrl solenoid. Could you tell me specifically what faulty parts/components these could be referring to? Thank you

    Hi Kevin, thanks for the video and offering to answer questions. I've got one, regarding my approach to solving the fuel smell on my recently-purchased 2004 Forester. I have some ideas since the smell is most prevalent just after a fill up with the tank is completely full.
    I plan on going under there to check it out. I suspect its either a rusted tank (at the top) or the filler neck. Is there any other venting issues that may showup only when the tank is full? any help is appreciated.

    Do you know where the control solenoid is on a 05 forester. Under the hood or at the rear of the vehicle

    So I have 2003 Subaru impreza and I got the error code p1443. And I'm having issues gasing up leaving the pump automatically keeps clicking off even when I hold the handle?

    • @stephenpollard4868
      @stephenpollard4868 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the gas pump is clicking off it means you have a blockage in the evap line going into or out of the charcoal canister. This can also be caused by the evap solenoid failing in the closed position. Either of these scenarios will cause the p1443

    I have a 2010 Impreza and this happened years ago....was broke and couldnt afford to get it fixed. Reset the battery, went away....kinda forgot about it.....but last night before work it came back. Traction, cruise and check engine. How pricey is this to fix? I have heard $60-250......i paid my car off and i really dont wanna get a new one anytime soon.....any help would work. Cant afford a dealer that will charge $$$ but some local yocal may not know what the hell EVAP is. Thanks.

    Subaru calls the canister vent solenoid valve a "drain valve". They refer to a vent valve that is on top of fuel tank.
