I followed Visage and Steve for many years. Throughout, I not only spoke to him on the phone but we also wrote to each other from time to time. We lost touch after he went into severe depression. I remember how he felt when he did a radio phone in on LBC, with Tara Jeffries in 1984. He only got one phone call during the show. He was very sensitive, and not self absorbed. He always felt he let people (his fans) down. He never hated anyone, and still only had kind things to say, about Midge Ure who went on to stab him in the back when Ure sold his contract back to Polydoor for 25k. I still have those letters and cards, and some of it is really heart renching and the phone calls were just sounds of pain and those fuck**g drugs was his only relief. I know he had more to say but could never bring himself to tell me that one thing from his past, that led him down a certain path of addiction. God bless you Steve, you are now at peace.
Steve was a gentle soul and was hugely creative. Once the drugs took hold of him, he lost everything and fell into terrible depression. He eventually moved back to Wales and moved in with his sister who cared for him. Steve was a legend and his creativity played a significant role in creating the New Romantic movement. RIP Steve.❤
He seems so lucky to have been in that school that tolerated his difference and allowed him to expressive himself. That wouldn’t have happened at my school at pretty much the same time.
Steve was one of a kind, and the music from that period was so harmless. Steve was not a self-centered self-destructive creative, like the mean and shallow studio 54 crowd. Steve was a very inclusive professional. Fade to gray was awesome, it had power.
But Fade to Grey wasn´t his product. The power came from the classic synth artists Payne and Currie together with Ure, not to forget the drummer Cedric Sharpley who really invented a distinct drum beat to the track. Steve did a fantastic haunting vocal on the track though.
His legacy lives on to this day. His creative spirit was just a priceless gift to the world and he paved the way for so many great artists and designers. Rip Steve Strange. What a loss.

i assume everyone watching this is likely a visage mega fan, so i have a question for all of you people who have been following for a long time. why cant i find a single live performance by the band or steve online? were they strictly a studio band? i did actually find one live performace but it was something from the 2000s. anyone have a link to a recording of a live performace from the 80s or 90s? if not, can anyone explain why it doesnt exist?
Maybe "live" as in tv performances but which, again, were mainly a pre-recorded thing (there was one off of "The Tube" they did back in 1982/83, performing "Pleasure Boys" - a segment of which also appeared in the BBC's Top 10 New Romantics TV special)... They probably did perform live at times back then - but yes, Visage were mostly a studio "supergroup" of sorts. In recent years, prior to Steve's passing, there were some nice true live moments captured here via YT.
Strange had little part in writing FTG . Chris Payne wrote the bars.. I’m not too familiar with the rest of the music but for sure midge was present. I don’t think strange had much talent. But I love Visage. He obviously had visual talent. But not musical

The early 1980s 1980 to 1983 were a great time, I was in my early teens then.

I suggest you read his autobiography “Blitzed”. It’s fantastic. And yes… studio band only.
