I showed this movie to my wife who is from China originally. I asked her if the Chinese characters outside the curio shop meant anything and she said it translated to God’s Monsters. Mogwai is also a play on the Chinese word Yaoguai which is Chinese for strange creature or monster.
This wasn't directed by Stephen Spielberg it was actually directed by low key legend Joe Dante, who also directed Gremlins 2, The Howllng (werewolf dramedy), Piranha (70s version), Explorers (aka 'tween Close Encounters'), Matinee (with John Goodman), Innerspace (80s Ant Man) and The Burbs (a horror comedy classic with Tom Hanks)... In the 80s, if you see "Steven Spielberg Presents" it means it's part of his production company but not necessarily that he directed it.
The sequel isn't a horror movie but it's still a lot of fun. This original Gremlins movie is a masterpiece. If you haven't seen the TV show Grimm you might really like the monster of the week vibe it has. Plus it's my favorite show and I want more people to react to it.

I would recommend checking out the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, if that's OKay? It's one of the best horror sequels, one of the best comedy sequels, and one of the best sequels in general. I love that it doesn't try to top the original and it just leans into being a live action cartoon comedy movie. I also love that it pokes fun at the original and in particular makes fun of the rules. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I think it'd make for a great reaction and it's definitely worth a watch.

This and Gremlins 2 were staples of my childhood. If you're looking for an unconventional Christmas movie to watch, I would suggest 'Night of the Comet' (1984). It's a wonderful 'B' movie with a great soundtrack and a comic book horror vibe.
Great reaction, Skele! I was a very young man when this came out, and it has been one of my favorite "Christmas" movies ever since. Also, the "giant sea pods" scene on tv was from the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". That and the remake (in the 70s?) is really good. Finally, the snowplow driver talking about gremlins in airplanes and watches, etc., is because that is the common lore. There are gremlins , especially in machinery, that just make things go wrong... thus, the name of the movie.
Thank you!! Body Snatchers is on my watch list I can't wait to get round to it! 🥰 And darn those gremlins, now I know who keeps messing up my editing 😂😂😂
Films in the vein of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal and others that are kinda close: Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai: Across the Eighth Dimension, Dreamscape, Return to Oz, Heavenly Creatures, The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Legend, The Secret of NIMH and The City of Lost Children.
Lets gooo!! Nice i knew this movie would be your speed Also the movie gizmo is watching is "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1956)" the (1978) version is also really good Some possible in season suggestions -Jack frost 1997 (a really cheesy horror movie ) -30 days of night - Abominable 2006 (more of an indie horror B-movie) - the white buffalo 1977
If you're a lover of The Jim Henson Company puppeteering, have you seen the TV show Farscape? Two of the main cast are puppets, and one is most definitely NOT Kermit. If you haven't seen it, don't trust the air date order (they aired it wrong), the Blu-ray box order (way off), or even production order (to meet the schedule some episodes were filmed concurrently). The Starburst edition of the DVDs has it correct, and the audio commentaries available will give plenty of behind the scenes info.
42:24 I think you man _Small Soldiers_ (1998) not _Toy Soldiers_ (1991), it happens a lot since _Small Soldiers_ is about animate toys but _Toy Soldiers_ is about terrorists attacking a boarding school.
Had a great time seeing this when I was 10 years old in the theaters back in 1984. AWESOME score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. Love that 'Gremlin Rag'. He made a cameo in the movie as well as the sequel("Gremlins 2: The New Batch"), which he also scored.
It's been used in 52 movies and television shows including "The Nutty Professor", "Jingle All the Way", "Bruce Almighty." The others have been more heavily disguised, such as in "Escape from LA", "Sliders", and "Batman & Robin" (1997).
That was a fun reaction. Gremlins is the perfect introduction into the horror game for kids, at least for me it was. ( although I should have left out the santa speech 😅)
Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal are so awesome aren't they! :D I'm not sure why, other than the Terry Jones connection, because there's no puppetry but Erik the Viking is hilarious and has all the detail of a Terry Gilliam film (John Cleese is the villain :D ) Phoebe Cates always makes Me think of her with Rik Mayall in Drop Dead Fred. And her depressing christmas horror stories in the Gremlins films are hilarious. I don't recall you mentioning Terry Gilliam in any reactions, unless I missed it somewhere but you'd love his films, any of them. Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing. The art design and attention to amazing details is mindblowing Time Bandits!! JABBERWOCKY!!! I knew there was something I was missing! You like puppets. You don't see it til the end, but that's one damn huge practical effect puppet vs Michael Palin (Python) and the rest of the film is hilarious. I think the point of tonight's autistic rant is Terry Gilliam. recommendation and or praise! :)
I just love when the reactors fall in love with Gizmo. It makes these videos so much better. Btw, if you’d like, I know where you can get a great Gizmo doll. They’re hand made, screen accurate and have glass eyes.
Glad you loved this classic! Took me years before I finally watched it myself. I do think it's cool that you like Gizmo which is traditionally cute as much as the weird stuff. :D Some trivia for you the writer of this film, Chris Columbus played the 6-fingered man in Princess Bride, was a cast member of the classic American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, directed the first Harry Potter movie, and is married to Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis. Mogwai is Chinese for 'Devil' or 'Demon.' I used to joke around in the office by calling my co-workers 'Ba Mogwai' or 'white devil.' p.s. you should come to Seattle sometime and visit the Museum of Pop culture. Paul Allen was a huge sci-fi/fantasy/horror fan and there are great exhibits featuring props/costumes from movies and TV. They had/have one of the screen-used Gizmos, and it's really fascinating to look at it in person. Because of the way the latex ages, he looks like he died a very shocking dead. It's kind of hilarious (you can find pictures online).
Noting that you want to see more films employing puppetry effects, "Gremlins" success spawned a slew of "imitations" and low budget "knock-offs" later that decade into the 90s. Probably the best known of these was "Critters". It did well enough to warrant 3 sequels in fairly moderate succession along with a 5th movie as recent as 2019. Another another was "Ghoulies" that had 3 sequels. Then there's "Hobgoblins" that was so dire that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" thoroughly "riffed" the h3ll out of it. the titular creatures in that film were not so much "puppet" as they were statically posed "dolls" that were simply shaken and tossed around. *Shudder* I'm sure there were other films that "took inspiration" from "Gremlins", but those I named are what I can immediately recall. Please, I'm not "judging" their merits (other than "Hobgoblins"), merely presenting examples of films that showcased puppet effects to depict diminutive creatures during that era.
Love the hair Skele. This is such a great movie, the concept for Gizmo is so good, but Stripe is even better and my favorite little demon monkey! He just wanted a big hug. A really good Christmas movie I can think of really isn't horror, but it does have some good special effect and is an absolute riot would be Violent Night.
Thank you!! Gizmo is adorable but man I love spikes design SO much, calling him a demon monkey is perfect 😂😂😂 I'd hug him!! I've heard good things of violent night!
I know how you feel. There is just something about movies relying more on practical effects and puppetry. Heavy CGI and green screen usage just feels off to me.
Has so much more soul and love in it, I put more emphasis on it around this season because I usually make gifts for my loved ones so as an artist, when we create for others we put nothing but our heart and soul into it, it's an aspect we put into that creation
The dad with the great voice was a country singer and songwriter from Oklahoma, pretty well known...well I know of him. haha He wrote "Never been to Spain"..which is a pretty popular song, Three Dog Night covered it.
I watched it at Christmas to mate also Jerry Goldsmiths score was amazing. I don’t know if you have watched it and you love Jim Henson watched teenage mutant ninja turtles 1990 the turtles 🐢 were created by Jim Henson hope you had a wonderful Christmas mate keep up the good work.
Hi Katie an other lovely review so much fun Steven Spielberg was a big fan of The Howling and gave Joe Dante the directors job He also directed Prianha one you might like Dick Miller the Patriotic American as I call him in the film is in every Joe Dante film The film they are watching with the seed pods is the original Invasion of the body snatchers Billy's friend is Corey Feldmen who would later play Edgar Frog vampire killer on the Lost Boys Take Care and Best Wishes
Gremlins lore actually dates back to WW1. In the British royal air force, if any piece of machinery or equipment breaks down they'd blame it on the gremlins
You're gonna love Gremlins 2.. and also check out Critters! How about Billy's mum, eh? I sometimes wonder if she inspired Ripley for the end of Aliens lol PS: I've never seen anyone react to the dad dead in the chimney story before by laughing - epic! Merry Chrimbo 🎅
Its not that rare. There are movies like critters ( people wrongly think its a gremlins knock of but it was actually written and in production before gremlins came out). Then you have C.H.U.D., tremors and things like that. Its just not common since CGI became a thing. If you're into puppetry and practical effects check out some 80s B movies like night of the demons(really good one and had the bonus of having Lenia Quigly in it), Night of the creeps, etc.
This movie is a Christmas tradition for me, every year. There were a number of "Gremlins" rip-offs that came out after this. The only one I could recommend is "Critters." Which is actually a lot of low-budget fun. The movie that was playing on television that you were curious about, is the original classic, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Well worth a watch.
"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas." "What are you talking about?" "The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus." Sweet Christ! 😳 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan. Location Location Fact: The set for Kingston Falls is the same one used for Back to the Future (1985). Both movies were filmed on the Universal Studios backlot. PG-13 Rating Fact: This movie and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R rating. Practical Security Fact: Zach Galligan recounted in an interview that when the movie was made, there was no CGI, so all of the Gremlins were animatronics, each costing between $30-40,000. When everyone left the lot for the day, security would have everyone open the trunks of their cars to make sure they weren't stolen. Mythology Fact: A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators. Depictions of these creatures vary widely. Stories about them and references to them as the causes of especially inexplicable technical and mental problems of pilots were especially popular during and after World War II. Christmas Nightmare Fact: The "Santa Speech" proved to be controversial and studio executives insisted upon its removal because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante however stubbornly refused to take the scene out saying it represented this movie as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Executive producer Steven Spielberg did not like the scene, but despite his creative control, he viewed this movie as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) would later hilariously lampoon this ridiculous speech, which I highly recommend.
Watched this a ton as a kid. We all wanted our own Gizmo! Something that always confused me was does the no feeding rule apply to only your time zone? How does that work if it's always past midnight somewhere?
I studied film design & construction at art college; & also have a passion for film production history. Gremlins was filmed on Universal Studios backlot. Downtown Kingston Falls was the Courthouse Square set; same set featured in To Kill A Mockingbird, It’s A Wonderful Life & Back To The Future. The cinema the gremlins gather in, is the same cinema that Marty crashes the DeLorean into when he returns to 1985. Plus, the bank Billy works at is also the diner from Back To The Future. Also, the street Billy lives on is the Colonial St set. The same set was the main location for The ‘Burbs. Interestingly, in The ‘Burbs Corey Feldmans character lives next door to a house that was formally 1313 Mockingbird Lane; home to The Munsters. Another cool little Easter eggs are the Time Machine from the George Pal production for the HG Wells novel….& also Robbie the Robot from The Forbidden Planet cropping up at the convention scene….along with a cameo from Spielberg riding past on a bike.
the gremlins in the ww2 is based on a cartoon, short, the movie playig that you said you wanted to watch was invasion of the body snatcher 1956 version
Check out a science fiction tv series called “Farscape”. It was produced by Jim Henson’s company and all the aliens and creatures were done with makeup, prosthetics, and full puppets.
If you ❤loved😍 'Gremlins, you might like 'Critters'... and if you liked 'Critters' you might also like 'Attack the Block'... I agree there needs to be a return to puppetry and animatronics in film.
Originally the movie was gonna be darker - the dog was gonna be killed, mom would have been decapitated & there was gonna be a scene were Gremlins made hamburgers out of people in a McDonalds type restaurant. But all of that was changed by the movie's producer Steven Spielberg (the dog one I definitely was glad was changed because I hate that cliché bullsh*t in horror movies). Gizmo & Stripe were originally gonna be the same character, but Spielberg changed that too because he knew that the audience would love Gizmo 😉 Dick Miller (Mr. Futterman) always has a small role or a cameo in a Joe Dante movie. Joe Dante is also known for The Howling & Piranha (which is one of many Jaws ripoff movies, lol, but funny enough it actually got a sequel directed by James Cameron, which was his directorial debut, and two remakes, the 2nd one sucked) Hope you do Gremlins 2. The horror tone is pretty much gone & is more of a batsh*t crazy comedy, but it still a good & funny movie 🙂 There's Silent Night, Deadly Night (which had parents outraged & they even protested outside the theaters back in the day), Christmas Evil & an obscure 1989 movie called Elves, which is about na*i elves! 😂😜

Can't wait to see that reaction. One of my favorite effects in that one were wide shots of Gizmo running on his tiny lil legs.
During World War II, whenever there was a mechanical malfunction, it would be attributed to "gremlins", little mischief-causing imps.
Little Shop Of Horrors (1986) is the last word in puppetry. One of the puppets needed 60 puppeteers operating it together and the results are perfect.

There are gremlins , especially in machinery, that just make things go wrong... thus, the name of the movie.
Thank you!!
Body Snatchers is on my watch list I can't wait to get round to it! 🥰
And darn those gremlins, now I know who keeps messing up my editing 😂😂😂
You gotta admit, Mama Peltzer holds it down.
Films in the vein of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal and others that are kinda close:
Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai: Across the Eighth Dimension, Dreamscape, Return to Oz, Heavenly Creatures, The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Legend, The Secret of NIMH and The City of Lost Children.
When my mum's cat had babies, one of them looked exactly like Gizmo. She'll be 16 in april but she'll always be my baby Gizmo. 😻
Lets gooo!! Nice i knew this movie would be your speed
Also the movie gizmo is watching is "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1956)" the (1978) version is also really good
Some possible in season suggestions
-Jack frost 1997 (a really cheesy horror movie )
-30 days of night
- Abominable 2006 (more of an indie horror B-movie)
- the white buffalo 1977
Team Gremlins!
Check out the movies Little Monsters(1989), Trick ‘R Treat(2007), and The Goonies(1985).
Oh yeah, Puppet Master & Demonic Toys i think you might like too.
Not heard of those either!
Love Gremlins!!!! Thanks for the reaction Skele.
It was a pleasure! 💙
Have you seen Ghoulies or Critters?
Late 80's early 90's I believe
No i haven't! Got lots of recommendations for those, really gotta check em out! 💙
Why’s that art at the beginning so good tho
Hehe thank you! 💙
Fright Night?
If you're a lover of The Jim Henson Company puppeteering, have you seen the TV show Farscape? Two of the main cast are puppets, and one is most definitely NOT Kermit. If you haven't seen it, don't trust the air date order (they aired it wrong), the Blu-ray box order (way off), or even production order (to meet the schedule some episodes were filmed concurrently). The Starburst edition of the DVDs has it correct, and the audio commentaries available will give plenty of behind the scenes info.
I haven't heard of farscape no! Thank you will check that out and try to get my hands on the starburst one if I can!
Every kid in the 80's wanted a Gizmo of their own, regardless of the consequences.
No one ever notices that this is the same town set that was used for Back to the Future.
Gosh I haven't seen it since I was a kid that's crazy!
Gremlins 2 next! its basically a spoof of the original, pure cartoonish chaos
Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal are so awesome aren't they! :D
I'm not sure why, other than the Terry Jones connection, because there's no puppetry but Erik the Viking is hilarious and has all the detail of a Terry Gilliam film (John Cleese is the villain :D )
Phoebe Cates always makes Me think of her with Rik Mayall in Drop Dead Fred.
"Tideland" was just as moving as any of them, but I'd never class it as fun or funny.
I just love when the reactors fall in love with Gizmo. It makes these videos so much better. Btw, if you’d like, I know where you can get a great Gizmo doll. They’re hand made, screen accurate and have glass eyes.
Ooh are they super cuddly? I've heard the furby ones are too solid
@@skeletalk They aren’t cuddly like plush dolls. Farah made more in the way that China dolls are made. I can send you a link if you would like.
Christmas horror try SILENTNIGHT DEADLYNIGHT.
Glad you loved this classic! Took me years before I finally watched it myself. I do think it's cool that you like Gizmo which is traditionally cute as much as the weird stuff. :D
Some trivia for you the writer of this film, Chris Columbus played the 6-fingered man in Princess Bride, was a cast member of the classic American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, directed the first Harry Potter movie, and is married to Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis.
Mogwai is Chinese for 'Devil' or 'Demon.' I used to joke around in the office by calling my co-workers 'Ba Mogwai' or 'white devil.'
p.s. you should come to Seattle sometime and visit the Museum of Pop culture.
12:15 "Mogwai... some Chinese word..."
It means "demon"
Do a reaction for Gremlins 2 which is actually better than the original. Also if you like puppet movies you should react to Meet The Feebles.
Yesss I will! Very excited!
Not heard of meet the feebles!
Please, I'm not "judging" their merits (other than "Hobgoblins"), merely presenting examples of films that showcased puppet effects to depict diminutive creatures during that era.
critters was in production at the same time, it's not a knockoff
Love the hair Skele. This is such a great movie, the concept for Gizmo is so good, but Stripe is even better and my favorite little demon monkey! He just wanted a big hug. A really good Christmas movie I can think of really isn't horror, but it does have some good special effect and is an absolute riot would be Violent Night.
Thank you!!
Gizmo is adorable but man I love spikes design SO much, calling him a demon monkey is perfect 😂😂😂 I'd hug him!!
I've heard good things of violent night!
For a New Years movie watch Night of the Comet.
28:09
Gremlins 2 is great, but really more of a comedy
mogwaiiiii!!!!
amazing gremlins art as always! :)
Mogwai ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
Thank you mushy!
I like how you called the chainsaw…twice.
😂😂😂
I know how you feel. There is just something about movies relying more on practical effects and puppetry. Heavy CGI and green screen usage just feels off to me.
Has so much more soul and love in it, I put more emphasis on it around this season because I usually make gifts for my loved ones so as an artist, when we create for others we put nothing but our heart and soul into it, it's an aspect we put into that creation
If you wanna see a muppet horrorfilm, check out Meet the feebles by Peter Jackson 😁
Ooo will have to check that out thank you!
The dad with the great voice was a country singer and songwriter from Oklahoma, pretty well known...well I know of him. haha He wrote "Never been to Spain"..which is a pretty popular song, Three Dog Night covered it.
Oooh that makes sense, he has such a smooth voice it's perfect
It's not horror, per se, but I hope you've seen the puppet scene from Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
The Howling and Body Snatchers are very high on the list I'm so excited to watch those! Thank you for the love! 💙
@@skeletalk Try and do the original Body Snatchers before doing the remakes.
You should see Critters
its on my channel ;)
Gremlins lore actually dates back to WW1. In the British royal air force, if any piece of machinery or equipment breaks down they'd blame it on the gremlins
You're gonna love Gremlins 2.. and also check out Critters! How about Billy's mum, eh? I sometimes wonder if she inspired Ripley for the end of Aliens lol
PS: I've never seen anyone react to the dad dead in the chimney story before by laughing - epic! Merry Chrimbo 🎅
I'm SUPER excited to do gremlins 2! Might push it forward in my list actually.
I've had a few recommendations for Critters so that I'd def on my radar now! Really need to watch body snatchers too!
Dear woman on this channel. I write horror stories- but you will have to ask where they are on yt. It is my birthday 🎂. 😊
"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas."
"What are you talking about?"
"The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus."
Sweet Christ! 😳
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan.
Written by Chris Columbus, who would go on to direct HOME ALONE and the first few HARRY POTTER films!
The cartoon featuring the original gremlins is 'Falling Hare' (1943) starring Bugs Bunny.
Check out a science fiction tv series called “Farscape”. It was produced by Jim Henson’s company and all the aliens and creatures were done with makeup, prosthetics, and full puppets.
Watch"part2,the new batch".see gizmo act like "rambo".
You're amazing Skele. Great reaction. I love this movie even though it scared me as a child. Hope you react to Gremlins 2. ❤😊❤😊
Gizmo & Stripe were originally gonna be the same character, but Spielberg changed that too because he knew that the audience would love Gizmo 😉
Dick Miller (Mr. Futterman) always has a small role or a cameo in a Joe Dante movie.
Joe Dante is also known for The Howling & Piranha (which is one of many Jaws ripoff movies, lol, but funny enough it actually got a sequel directed by James Cameron, which was his directorial debut, and two remakes, the 2nd one sucked)
Hope you do Gremlins 2. The horror tone is pretty much gone & is more of a batsh*t crazy comedy, but it still a good & funny movie 🙂
There's Silent Night, Deadly Night (which had parents outraged & they even protested outside the theaters back in the day), Christmas Evil & an obscure 1989 movie called Elves, which is about na*i elves! 😂😜
Hi Skele, it's great that you've seen this creature feature, it is a classic and I enjoyed your reaction to it. I like your reactions and I'm subscribed. Merry Christmas, have a fun one. Please react to it's fun sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) This first movie though was directed by Joe Dante and I highly recommend his 1978 horror; Piranha. And Lake Placid (1999) is an entertaining creature feature too! Please react to those in the new year. Keep up all the fantastic work you do :) x
Thank you for your reaction Wednesday.
😂😂😂
It is a Christmas movie?
Yes!
@@skeletalk I mean what that film was out?
have you seen The Dark Crystal!?
Labyrinth.
oh, yep.
It's my favourite film! I just went to a exhibit the other day that had kira and jens clothing and some concept art! 💙
