Ford meant for these to be lifetime transmissions that only need flushes if used for heavy duty applications, and even those are only recommended every 150k miles.
@@KalebJolley there is no such thing as a lifetime fluid. If anyone plans on keeping their vehicle longer than 70k miles. Then change the fluids. That’s such silliness to believe that

It's a shame you can't get all the fluid without a flush I suppose. I'm thinking of driving mine for awhile then change out the 4 quarts I have left over by removing exactly 4 qts and replace with same. I'm trying to find out how long it takes for all the fluid in the torque converter to become diluted with the new fluid...any info on that? Thanks for the Vid
While your doing the fluid and filter also replace the sleeve for the electrical connector. It will leak eventually. Also shift thru all the gears while the truck is running to flow fluid thru the trans. Then check the level. Pain in the butt to get level right. Go slow while filling and dont overfill. There should have been a recall on the electrical sleeve leaking fluid. So much for the lifetime sealed trabsmission.
Thanks Brother, good video. I just had to do this to my C-6 but nice to have a dipstick up top. I did however replace my C-6 with a new Pan w/drain plug and Moroso pan gasket. The Lube locker gasket did not prevent leaks so Moroso did. Doing my 15 F-150 now. Cheers from Motown.
I’ve got a 06 190k miles f150 4x4 given to me. I dropped the pan swap the fluid and filter. I’ve driven a few hundred miles since and have a pump I could drop down the fill plug. Would you pump a few quarts out and add some more. Given the pan drop was only 5/13 quarts fluid swap?
Thanks for explaining the work. It is designed a little bit difficult to do. Can you tell when to change the transmission fluid because I don't see it in the owners manual book, it says only for the transfer case. Thanks
Thank you for the video and recently having some overheating and shifting problems in 2018 5.0 do you have to have the truck on and then check the dipstick or when it’s sitting for a while
I changed my gasket on my 98 Ford F-150 4.6 xlt and tighten the bolts to 11 w the torque but it’s still leaking, do you know if after years the pan needs to be changed? Or should I get a gasket like the expensive one?
I have zero clearance in between the exhaust and the pan bolts. Literally less than half an inch of clearance. My exhaust must be bent, any ideas? Do I have to take apart the entire exhaust?
@Aaron Hines Do you recommend also flushing the residual fluid out of the trans cooler? Most say there is a substantial amount (+2 qts) of dirty fluid which eventually gets recirculated back into the trans/filter if don't flush out through the return line.
A flush isn't advisable on these trucks. The residual fluid gets blended with the 6qts of new lv fluid. The filter is massive, and will trap anything circulating in the system. Fordtechmakuloco on youtube backs this up, and he is a very reputable ford technician.
Man, I have a 2009 f150 4x4 with 40k, the bulkhead connector that's just above the trans pan leak's, you have to drop the pan to replace the connector o/rings !
why didn't you show how you put in the transmission fluid. I watch most of all your video just to see you come back on and already have the transmission fluid Iin. wow keep up the good work!! never again!!!
Very descriptive video! I only would like to see a little better view of where the transmission filter goes. It's a little too zoomed in to see where the actual location of it is.
I use to do all the maintenance on my vehicles but these days with all the tools and techniques used, I let a qualified mechanic do the work. It's good to know what all is involved so I can decide if the labor, time spent and price for the job is fair. How long did it take from start to finish?
Do you have to use something like an OBD II scanner to read the trans fluid temp to make sure it’s at operating temperature or is that going over the top? I’d like to keep this truck for 12+ years.
Why didn't you address the difference in filters for these transmissions? Looks like you had both options on your workbench. There is a 1" pickup tube and a 1 1/2" pickup tube depending on which sub-model transmission you have.
Do you think it's possible to use a transfer pump to empty the pan before dropping it? Stick the end of the pump into the fill hole and pump the fluid out?
In the past I stuck a hose in there and duct taped it to my Shop-Vac and sucked out fluid in my rear differential, transfer case and transmission on other vehicles
Manual says transmission capacity is 13.1 quarts, nowhere near what is shown here. Assuming some additional fluid that needs to be flushed. Is a simple drain and refill sufficient for my 100K mile service? Seems like it should be flushed. TIA.
Darin Morgante I have heard it can be a very bad idea to flush an automatic transmission because it could possibly due more harm than good. You might end up forcing dirt or debris into sensitive areas of the tranny. Best to just drop the pan, replace the filter. Throughly clean the pan magnet and gasket, then refill with clean new fluid.
Guys I need help. 2012 Ford F-150 xlt with this tranny. The first 4 bolts, closest to the engine, I cannot get out for the life of me. The angle is horrible with that exhaust pipe in the way. Great video! I did mine recently, new filter, gasket and cleaned out. Even after torquing to spec, still getting a very small leak. Any ideas how to fix that?
There isn't one under the hood on my 2016 (and higher). In Ford's wisdom, decided that trans fluid doesn't need to be checked on a routine basis from under hood. Therefore, only one (as shown) under vehicle. "Better Ideas at Ford"... NOT! ;)
