  • If you are a member of my paper bead group on Facebook (link below) or if you have been my pictures on social media, you will know that I have been experimenting with my paper beads and fire. In this tutorial, I will share with your the step I do and share with you a set of beads I made from scratch.
    WARNING - IN THIS TUTORIAL I AM USING A GAS POWERED TORCH THAT WILL GET VERY HOT PLUS YOU ARE SLIGHTLY SETTING YOUR PAPER BEADS ON FIRE. IF YOU DECIDE TO FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL, THEN PLEASE DO SO WITH CAUTION. HAVE PLENTY OF WATER TO HAND AND KEEP CLOTHES AND HAIR AWAY FROM THE NAKED FLAME.
    In this tutorial, I am going to cover the following topics.
    * HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES
    * How to torch your beads with a flame
    * How to add a touch of shimmer with a mica glaze
    * finishing your beads off
    * An alternative to the first option

    Love it! Do you know if you need the torch like tool or could you carefully try it above an open flame (like from a candle)? I typically use Elmers glue to glue down the end of my paper strips and then have some excess that I smear around the bead. Do you think that will affect how the heat alters things?

    I'm just getting started and am absolutely in love with the bead ideas! I have one question, tho: with all the labor that goes into the creation of each individual bead, how much would one be advised to charge for something like a full beaded bracelet with findings? These are valuable!

    • @SqueakerChimp
      @SqueakerChimp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a really good question and it's not an easy one to answer. With something like these beads, you might find it better to use maybe 1-3 beads and pair them with other beads that are less labour intensive.

    • @SqueakerChimp
      @SqueakerChimp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Touching or torching? the torching gives them a colour that paper alone would not achieve. It is a well known technique used in wood to enhance the grain of the wood. I am applying it here to enhance the paper strips.

    Yikes! I hope you have a fire extinguisher nearby. *Never* lay a torch on its side, especially with the still-warm nozzle touching paper--a *very* dangerous habit, indeed! Also, no one should hold a paper bead on a knitting needle--or other metal object--when applying a flame to it as the metal will act as a conductor. There should be some type of insulating material on the handle(s), such as the rubber grips on the pliers you are using. In general, it's not a good idea--at all--to direct a flame to paper on which an adhesive has been applied. Why would you do this? Can't you achieve the same effect with ink or paint?

    • @SqueakerChimp
      @SqueakerChimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for your concern but as stated in the video I had safety measures in place. The torch nozzle was not hot and no one was in danger. The metal knitting needle did not get hot, the heat was not on it. I did not get burnt, if I did I would not have posted this video. The heat is on the bead for seconds, we are not trying to melt something like you would with glass. This is one method of adding a surface texture and colour to your beads. It’s not for everyone, I appreciate you watching and your thoughts.
