I like to run my counter play like a QB draw Pass then Run option. We also run GF counter as opposed to Trey or Yoyo. We basically line up our F at a sniffer position and wrap him behind the guard. We are blessed to have had a few Athletes at QB the past few years but we can also run a similar play with a TB where we roll the QB and based on the force defenders positioning he can stuff the ball in to the RB back pocket or continue to roll and throw the concept. It also helps us with our line because we tend to face alot of 3 man fronts or run counter into the 1 tech which often leads to a free release from the tackle in which we do not want due to the fact we have been called for IE downfield. So to answer the question my favorite tag is Snag or Stick. If we face a cover 3 team bubble is another good option and we can throw that based on alignment of the Force defender or post snap depending on how well the QB is of a reader
Coach Xadanar, So you tag Snag or Stick to the backside of you counter? That sounds like an amazing concept. What's the quarterback's thought process on it? I like your sprint out counter. Kind of like a version of sprint out draw?
Coach McKie, Yes it is run to the back side of the counter play. Basically the QB when he arrives to the line of scrimmage checks the shell of the defense to determine what he is doing. If we are facing a cover 3 team we can still run our snag to the backside but it would be more of a game planned option. Because most cover 3 teams we face like to have 6 in the box (atleast where I coach) we can then move the read to the front side force defender and conflict him with a bubble screen from the slot. (in 2x2 W/ a sniffer) The read for the QB works the same on both sides. If the force defender expands on the third step of your drop stick your foot in the ground and get north south. If we face a cover 2 team with a light box i prefer to keep the QB to the snag and away from the bubble because the CB has a real chance at making a play in a Press man or soft flat coverage. Against a C2 Zone i feel that stick is the best option as it stretches the Backside Force/cutback player and we still run the bubble front side which can also cause the front side force defender to take himself out of the play leaving our QB and Sniffer 2 on 1 with the free safety. Finally if they are a man cover 2 team snag is the best option IMO because we can get a pick from our snag receiver and get our slot out in the flat with grass in front of him. It is actually a really simple concept for the QB though put the ball where the Force defender vacates. Yes our sprint out counter is just like sprint out draw but with counter blocking. usually it is a 2 back set which gives us a true counter look but we can run it out of any formation if we have numbers in the box and just run it like G Trap. The call and everything stays the same for the Oline and we replace the sniffer with a WR out in the formation. Our play calling is pretty simple as well Formation, O-line play, WR routes.
Same here. I'll send you an email...saw the email addy on your website. I'm just getting back to the coaching grind. Took a few seasons off, but my brother took a HC job at a school that's won 6 games in the last 5 years. So...we have some work to do - on both sides of the ball. Thanks again for your help. Lots of great content here and on the site. BTW - I checked out the website for the one back clinic. Noticed they sell the recordings for $100...probably have to wait on that as camp starts next week and I'll be plenty busy.
I like QB Counter/Power with a swing Screen To the Tailback. Using push motion with the tailback is great. Technically Don't you have 4 Run Schemes. Power, IZ, Pin And Pull, Counter.
My favorite play in my playbook. To screw with keys if we are running counter away from the 3 tek we down block the N with PSG and turn out the DE with the PST. GUT with both pullers. It's a good changeup that we have had success with. I'm guessing you use that scheme and read the front side backer and run a snag in behind him with #2 or #3? If youre running into the trips. I'm not a huge rpo guy yet lol.
We ran this when I was in high school but we would run a jet sweep to set it up and when we ran the counter, we'd use the fake to freeze the backside free man
Hey coach...more good stuff. Have a link or somewhere I can get more info on that key screen you mentioned? Have you covered it in any of your other videos?
CoachLou, Thanks for the compliment coach. I have mentioned it here and there on my videos, but I haven't written it up on my site yet. I'll put together a blog post on the screen.
Sounds good. I think I get the concept...just wanna make sure. You're just throwing what is basically a 1 step out to either #2 or #3 to the trips side with the other two guys just blocking. And because the guy running the 1 step out/key screen is off the LOS on the snap...and that one step route still puts him behind the LOS when he catches it (or darn close) you can just block it like Fast Screen with your other two guys. I like the concept. Solves some problems that may come with trying to throw fasts against teams that try to take them away aggressively. And there is sort of an element of surprise built into it, because it LOOKS like a pass read. Like in our offense, we would run 3x1 Stick with a very similar look. An MOR Go outside, a 2 step shoot or a 4 step snap by #2, and a Stick route from our Y. The key screen gives the same look in terms of movement...and would be a good way to keep defenses on their heels, especially if we run it out of tempo.
Right now, it's a straight pass because it's our first season at a new school...and we want to install the basics first so we don't put too much on our guys, especially the QB. He's a talented kid, but a first-year starter with very limited varsity experience, and little-to-no QB experience - especially with the spread concepts we're teaching. No real tags right now. If we're 3x1 and the back is away from trips, we run snag on the backside...and as we move along we may give the QB a draw option. If we do that though, the backside will probably be something like a Go route and a swing by the back. We also "switch" the stick. Where our #2 guy to trips runs the Stick, and #3 takes the flat - either with a 2 step Shoot/Flat route where we sorta get a rub/pick action...or with a bubble so it resembles a fast/bubble screen to that hole player. In 7-on-7 this summer, we also ran it 3x1 with the back to the trips side. Out of this #1 runs his MOR Go, #2 runs the Stick, our RB runs an arrow or swing/sweed, and our #3 guy runs seam where he peaks to the QB after 4 steps, especially if the defense lines up the hole player over #2 and tries to keep the MLB or an ILB in the box. If he doesn't get the ball on as a little dump/peek pass...he works vertical. It also looked good down in the red zone when teams would press him and then we threw it with him 1-on-1 with a LB to the back line of the endzone.
Coach, I have a Tight End that I love playing on the LOS. He is our best down and base/fan blocker up front. I want to pull him on CT Trey but I do not want to take him off the LOS and tip off the Defense. What do you think about pulling BS Guard and an athletic TE from his position on the LOS?
Hey coach. How can I get a tutorial on doing live webcast. Want to implement with my team this year. I'm currently just doing the screen cast and sharing it with them. Would like to give them the opportunity to watch live & ask questions
Hey Coaches,
What is your favorite RPO tag when running your Counter Trey play?

That's some great stuff coach. I'd love to see some of your film so I could borrow some of your concepts.

Gut is a nasty play. We never used it, but I would hit the snag if we did. Haha.
Hey coach what program do you use for your playmaking on the PC
We ran this when I was in high school but we would run a jet sweep to set it up and when we ran the counter, we'd use the fake to freeze the backside free man
We've done that a couple of times. I don't know why we got away from it because it was always money.

You got it coach. Do you tag anything with your 3 x 1 Stick? Or is it a straight pass?
Right now, it's a straight pass because it's our first season at a new school...and we want to install the basics first so we don't put too much on our guys, especially the QB. Coach Bishop,
If your tight end can do that then you are going to kill teams. That's one of the things some wing-t teams do and it murders defenses.

What program do you use for your playbook? Been looking for one and can't seem to find a good one or one I can use easily
+Jonathan Gongora Coach Gongora,
I'm using Hudl's playbook feature.
