  • 30 ton log splitter is finally far enough along to split some tough live oak.
I also discuss cost associated with building a log splitter.

I was a bit worried with a large number of fake reviews but I am very pleased with the results. Bit of background, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxmKn8dCAXovWn8_cLYoosGLVrVrpwlIMc I need to split approximately 1.5 cords of wood and didn't feel like destroying my back. I purchased this anticipating to have a few issues splitting wood but have only come across a few logs of elm where the stringy nature of elm made it more difficult to split. Overall its not a necessarily fast process but it also isn't a very arduous one either. I came and went fairly often to do different tasks but once I stayed and got into a system I could easily split my pieces in a fairly timely manner.

The motor went bad about 2 months(Jun2023) ago but, other than that, this log splitter with its new engine still gets the job done.

A couple of wings on the wedge would help you split your logs completely. I have built 2 splitters in my day and the wings made the splitter work much better.

I built my own using a Wisconsin 2 cylinder engine to power it, the beam was 1 inch H beam 14 feet long donated from scrap pile at work, pump came off ram hoe. I had to buy the rebuild kit pump donated from scrap at work. I actually had to pay for hoses and valves. Had old axle from house trailer. After I was done I cut a 14 inch shag bark hickory against the grain. My wedge is tool stee 18 inches tall, 12 inches deep and 1.25 inches thick. After I finished they started making box splitters and 4 way splitters. I had a custom box splitter 8 inch by 14 in blocks. Traded for some overhaul work on his dozer. I really like it. My brothers put a hydraulic lift table on it. Now it wanders off a lot. Gotta call 4-5 places to get it back home. But they're all good old country boys. No harm no foul

This is great! When I build mine it will be a diesel motor w/twice the HP and a taller wedge. This gives great ideas!!! Side platforms (1) As a loader/feeder w/sides on it so that my Cat bucket can dump right on to it & (2) with front & back sides with hydraulic dump. Raise the whole thing about 4'-6' off of the ground so gravity can off-load onto a pickup truck or trailer. Also, I would move the hydraulic control close to wedge so that I don't have to hold while stretching. We all get old and we break down. I'm disabled so the "toys" have to do just about all of the work for me.GREAT JOB HOMESTEADPREPPER!

I saw one once where the splitting wedge could be lifted up and turned round if you wanted a four way split, but that’s the way to go, keep it simple build it tough and you will enjoy working it much more when you build your own, if you go to your local fabricators shop you should pick up all the steel fairly cheap, they might even do the welding work for you. Have fun

The stroke is 2 times longer than the length of log that fits into a stove. The splitter blade should be 10" closer to the cylinder so that the piston is not extended all the way out.

Put some graphite on top of the I-beam and under it also. It'll help prevent some

You need to add a platform on either side of the splitting wedge, so your wood doesn't drop to the ground, if you need to split pieces again /smaller. Easy to do, just weld them to the framer.

      5 x Pi x 3000(psi) = 47,123lbs or 23.5 tons.
Power would increase by roughly 46%.

Nice work. Building almost the same splitter as well. I would really consider lowering the pump or lift the oil tank to prevent negative pressure on the inlet-port of your pump. If you fore some reason experience this you will for sure have cavitation and the pump won't last long. Just saying as a friendly advice :-)

seems to work well, surplus material? material you already brought? scrap material from another job? they still cost you money... not sure why you wouldn't add that to the cost of building as a true cost.. bit of a false economy to say "I already had it, so it didn't cost me anything" and you still didn't say how much it cost? I understand sometimes its not about the cost but just fun to build something.. if thats the case they why even mention it right? - Thanks for sharing the build.
