  • For several years I have been using my DIY mill and while it has served me well and has been of more use in this configuration than it was as a combo it still had very limited bed travel. To solve this issue I decided to pull the trigger on a Precision Matthews PM 728. This video shows everything from delivery to break in including a fantastic trick on a good use for pallet strapping in the shop.

      Most of my time has been spent setting it up, but I have managed to make a few chips with it and it is so smooth and so accurate. Very happy with it.

    Congratulations. Your going to love it.
    It's often super nice to have the 'mill' AND a 'mini-mill' so you don't have to remove work/fixtures from the mill when you have something less precise to work on. Unless you really see a use for the combo-lathe-mill configuration, you might consider keeping your DIY mill for those second operations that can benefit from a more precise 'drill press'. 👍👍😎👍👍

      That is an excellent point... but then I would need to build the surface grinder from scratch 😂😂😂

    Congrats on the new mill! I've been very happy with my 727V and with PM support. I actually found your channel for the great info on using treadmill motors when I was putting one on my die filer. That was before I started making videos though so it's not on my channel.

      I know I am ver happy with mine. I have done a few "upgrades" to it but that would be the case with any machine I purchased.

    I had the same issue with my 833TV mill when it arrived, although I wasn’t there when a co-worker took it off of the truck. It was on two pallets and the top one had started to break and the mill and the boxes on top of the crate were a bit wobbly. Luckily I had it delivered to work where I had the use of a forklift truck to deal with it and there was no damage. The top pallet was just too flimsy for the weight. I think that P.M. had put it on the second pallet for shipping after installing the DRO and it was a good thing that they did.

      @dazecars  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      some times I think shipping company don't know how to get a package delivered without damaging it. 😂😂 It didn't help that the main 2 X 4 running down the middle of my top pallet was rotten. Would not have taken much of an impact for it to splinter.

      @@dazecars thats awesome. Im sure you probably havent really pushed it yet but im curious about what kinda chip load it can handle without bogging down. Im sure it's got enough to it to do tool room quality work in any material. Super excited for the surface grinder build! One is on my to-do list as well as a tool and cutter grinder and turn an older lathe bed into a shaft grinder and whatever else i can do with a grinding wheel set up like lathe tooling. Some day when i tool up a bit more i want to try my hand at grinding the male/female screws for a rotary screw compressor

      I have not done more than some small cuts .01" or so BUT I have seen video where this same type of machine did .075" cut in steel with a 1/2" end mill and did it without any issue at all. I too am looking forward to the surface grinder build especially since it is mostly ready to go already.

    Great piece of machinery you bought, congrats on that. Couldn't understand the system on the left hand column with the handle. Looks like a kind of oiling circuit with the small line going to the z axis saddle ?!?!?! But love the 19" of travel you get on the x axis. Happy playing with that.

    • @dazecars
      @dazecars  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a way oiler hand pump. It oils all 3 ways with a single pump

    • @Mustsed
      @Mustsed 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      OK, found an article about that on the web and and i'm shure my mill doesn't have that lines in the ways. I guess your new mill is allready modified to accept the oiler. Might be a good project for the near future! Didn't know about such a system, thanks for the info daze.@@dazecars

    • @dazecars
      @dazecars  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It actually came with the oiler installed. It was a feature that all of this type of mill come with.

    I'm looking at getting the pm 25 mill what do you recommend for vise size I currently have a siege x2d mill with a cheap 4 inch vise but with a new mill concentration I'm going to get a Kurt vise but not sure if I should get a 4" or 6 "

    • @dazecars
      @dazecars  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a 3" and a 4", I mention this only because the 4" is almost twice as big as the 3" so I can only imagine how much bigger a 6" would be. Not sure if Kurt makes one but if the pattern hold true a 5" might be about the perfect size where as a 6" would take up too much bed? I really can't say for sure not having put hands on a 5" or 6"

    Nice looking mill. How much does such a mill cost ?

    • @dazecars
      @dazecars  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot 😂😂😂 The basic mill is $3699 then shipping is $200 and an additional $79 if you need a lift gate at delivery. Thats just the basics but you can add power feed, tooling DRO and CNC components and all that will cost you a bunch more.
