One last one: Ruuvaoja caught my eye. Looks like it could be a bit tricky for the novice like myself.
Ä, Ö and Ü are often changed to "ae", "oe" and "ue" in countries which don't use these :-D You can even find this here in Germany, where the "Umlaute" (ÄÖÜ) are changed to the aforementioned ones in, for example, crosswords :-)
There was this Finnish cross-country skier and Olympic gold medalist, Marja-Liisa Hämäläinen. Watching the 1984 Winter Olympics, we could see on our TV screens how M-L Haemaelaeinen was coming near the mid-race check point and had skied 14:11.7 at that moment, or something.

A former neighbour of mine in England asked me where in Finland I was going to be living. I replied, in my accurate Finnish accent, Turku. He looked puzzled. Where? Turku, says I. No, he said, still puzzled. I still don't get it. Spell it out for me. T U R K U. Oh! He said. I've been there with my football team. It's called TÖÖR KY (terkoo if your own language is English)! Not what you said!!! I didn't argue with him though. I just smiled and carried on packing stuff into my car.
I'm working my way through all your videos, keep it up it's really helping. I loved this video but would like to say it left me feeling a little left out up here in the North, could you please do something on Lapland 🦌

There are other cities elsewhere that also have their very own Finnish name. Lontoo=London, Berliini=Berlin, Tukholma=Stockholm, Gööttebori=Göteborg, uh, I mean Gothenburg. No, that last one was only a Finnish attempt to say it like a Swedish-speaker I think. Other languages do it as well as you can see: Milan, Vienna, Antwerp, Brussels. I suppose people were weary of culturally appropriating the local language back when those were formed :)
Pietari is just the name of the apostle. It is also the name of the founder of the city in Finnish. Moskova just adds one O to the original. Some have quite strange names like Sestroretsk = Siestarjoki. It actually was part of Finland 1812-64.
Could you go over some of the different regional accents? My family is from the western coast and we pronounce things slightly differently. More of a lisp on the s and V’s are mostly pronounced as W’s.
I have a question. I listened really carefully but I always hear p like b, t like d and k like g sound. Why is that? Like there is a non written rule of pronouncing the voiceless stop consonants as the voiced plosive ones

I've been spending a lot of my time in Sysmä during the summer months since 1965. I'm what they call a "kesäsysmäläinen". And travelling from Espoo to Sysmä I drive through Helsinki, Vantaa and Lahti and sometimes I take the Hartola route from Lahti to Sysmä.
We used to have three types of municipalities in Finland: kaupunki (town/city), kauppala and maalaiskunta. There were differences in how those were governed and what kind of responsibilities they had. These days we only have one kind of municipality: kunta. A municipality may call itself kaupunki (town) if it so wishes irregardless of the amount of people living there. Otherwise it is simply called kunta.
I THINK FINISH IS LIKE TURKUSH, YOU WRITE, AS YOU PRONOUNCE AS YOU READ, NO EXTRA LETTERS OR 2 LETTERS MAKES ONE AS ( SH IN ENGLISH = Ş IN TURKISH )..I CAN READ FINISH BUT DONT UNDERSTAND ... WHY THEY HAVE TO REPEAT THE LETTERS IN ONE WORD? AS LATTTTTTE ? IS IT TRUE IT HAS 6 Ts ??
It varies, depending on the name. I suppose the reason for it is that the names or their endings actually mean or used to mean something and it used to feel unnatural to say, for example, that you go "at" or "on" a *pori* instead of into a pori, because it comes from the Swedish word Borg (castle, fortress). The names ending with a word relating to water, on the other hand, usually use the -lla, -lle endings: Seinäjoelle (joki=river), Juankoskelle (koski=rapid), Heinävedelle (vesi=water, typical ending for lake names and also for towns by those lakes), Saarijärvelle (järvi=lake). By the way, that last one is very prosaic for a city name: Island Lake, clearly people in that area thought very matter-of-factly back in the day. ;-) Edit: There are exceptions, of course: Turku, Turkuun (to the marketplace (archaic and dialectal word)), but tori, torille (to the marketplace). "Matkustan Lahteen" = I'm traveling to Lahti, but matkustan lahdelle (I'm travelling to a/the bay). Isn't Finnish wonderful?

In the end it is people living in the city who decide that. For example Ylistaroon, but Alistarolle. One uses always outer case when the talks of the city as an administrative unit. Minä menen Helsinkiin töihin (I am going to work in Helsinki), Minä menen Helsingille töihin (I am going to work for the city of Helsinki). Of foreign names one uses inner cases with the execption of many islands. Kyproselle more often than Kyproskeen, but always Irlantiin or Kuubaan - likely as those are seen primarily as countries and secondary as islands.

Interesting! Putting some vocal fry on the ending double vowels is a technique that I hadn't tried before.
