  • After deciding a change of scenery and a break from my usual catches was in order, I jumped over the New York / Pennsylvania state line to catch Norfolk Southern C62, the Grape Flyer Local, heading racing to North East to work Welch Foods across the tracks from the Lake Shore Railway Museum with SD40-2 #3452, a rare and unique snoot nose originally built in April 1978 for the Union Pacific!

Yeah it is! It's the second snoot nose I've seen in the past year, both were unexpected!

That's one really awesome video Matty!! I watch that switch job a couple times a week from the LSRHS east/west live feed but never seen it from that perspective. Very cool!!

This was my first time seeing a big ol' 132 Tonner haha. Thanks a lot!

Really first-rate drone shots of the switching action.
And the shots of the old engines & equipment are very good.

Great video. The snoot nose SD40, AND what looks like an old EMD double ended electric, South Shore Railroad loco. There's even a donkey engine used to push Iron ore hoppers under the Huletts, possibly in Conneaut. Again, Great video. Thanks, Jon

Nice shot from the LSRHS! What do you think of their AC6000CW?

You might be ready for drone racing after the way you handled that drone. Outstanding video of a really cool SD40 and of the other equipment at the museum. Looks like a lot of history sitting there. Really enjoyed this one.

I still need some rocket boosters for it, then I'll be good to go haha. Thanks a lot, it was good to head back there again! I didn't expect to see a snoot nose SD40 today, especially on NS, so that was quite the bonus.

Why are snoot nose locomotives so rare?

The production numbers of snoot noses wasn't nearly as high as the more standard shorter nosed SD40-2 units. SD40-2s came with several optional nose lengths- 81", 88", 116" and 123". I believe Southern Pacific had the only 123" noses on some of their tunnel motor SD40T-2 fleet. The longer noses used to house either radio control or in the case of Santa Fe, Locotrol equipment (a forerunner of today's DPUs)
