Borrowed Time for WNYP's Widebody GEs
The first Monday of June 2024 started off on a muggy note as Western New York & Pennsylvania's Salamanca Turn departed their yard in Olean, NY and made the trek along the former Erie mainline to Salamanca to work the interchange with the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad! Yet while today seemed like a normal day, the winds of change have been blowing for this shortline railroad for a few months now, with a drastic change in traffic resulting in stretches of their rail lines being placed out of service, as well as their GE fleet being reduced from eight to four, which are on borrowed time as they too will be leaving the property soon!

they're not called wide bodys ffs
Great meeting you today. Keep up the great work. Al
Give them to Union Pacific or something or maybe send to a railroad museum at least why waist great power especially these big beast AC6000CW's
the LA&L is going tier 4 compliment. so is B&H and WNYP. LAL 20 and 72 have been donated to the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum.
First LED ditch lights, I've seen. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for watching!
They are unique to be sure.
What is going on with the G.E. fleet, that they are going away??
There was a huge drop in traffic recently, so the railroad doesn't need them anymore.
back in February i chased the Salamanca job as well, they had 62 cars for interchange. Things sure have changed fast
What a sad waste. They spent all that time and money refurbishing the AC6000's, then they have to get rid of them after 5 years! I'm wondering what will happen to them, but I'm assuming they'll be scrapped.
Yeah tell me about it, I was hoping to catch more Emporium and Driftwood runs with these beasts too. Damn shame. From what I read, they're apparently going back to GECX, though I'm unsure of their fate once they get there (or wherever it is they're going).
@@mattygunn693 I've only ever gotten photos of them at Olean. I had always hoped to do a proper chase of them at some point, but I guess I missed my chance. I'm more worried about the future of the WNY&P as a whole, along with the ALCO's. Hopefully they go to good homes instead of being mercilessly scrapped like the LA&L's.
I guess the DL won't be far behind. I can't understand then why they purchased the 4 or 5 M630's that once ran on the Cartier Mining RR in Canada.
@@jimkelton4052The D-L and other GVT subsidiaries won't be affected by this at all; it was the decision of the LA&L (WNYP's parent company) to upgrade their fleets.
@@TrainsAreReallyCoolahh man, that sucks to hear! I'm concerned about the railroad's future too, and as for the Alcos, I'm hoping at least the C430s will go to another railroad and kept in service with how rare they are.
Are They Going To Keep The Alcos?
Nope, those are going too (just don't ask me where they're going, cuz I don't know). Their whole fleet is eventually going to be replaced with Geeps.
@@mattygunn693well that’s f***ing depressing
It's sad that the steel mills in Bethlehem Pennsylvania closed n they made one part into a casino one part into a museum not sure what they did with the rest of the steel mills
Seems like CP Draw would be an absolute chock point for Buffalo rail traffic as a whole. Somehow, everything keeps on rolling. Thanks for the coverage.
Nice catch on 425, how often does the LA&L usually run out of Lakeville north?
What is the open building at TS 7:07 used for?
Nice to watch, thanks. I noticed how much the 38's Paint had faded and I enjoyed listening to the Conductor.
Think I drove past you when you were filming this on Route 5. Off on the shoulder with the blinkers on. Be safe, dudes. 👍✌️
Wasn't me, I wasn't on or around Route 5 while filming this.
Great catch! Geep, SW, and covered hoppers, all good stuff!
Another great catch!
Thanks!
8:13 seems Mr. Turtle is not a rail fan. Great videos!
Thanks a lot! Good eye by the way, I didn't even see the poor little guy til you pointed it out!
I wonder if they'll ever get the NS draw bridge that's standing up, working again!
I doubt it. There's really no need for it, plus it's on the wrong side of the CSX main.
Do you know what the speed limit is across the drawbridge? I'm assuming it's 20 mph or less.
30. It's different for NS because the control point and drawbridge are controlled by CSX, so NS always has to stop and get permission to cross.
@@mattygunn693 Thanks!
@@garymartz7587 You're welcome!
GREAT VIDEO! Always cool to watch Geeps and SW's switching feed mills, etc. THANKS!
Thanks a lot! Yeah I agree, plus it's nice to see the end cabs getting out on the main and stretching their legs from time to time, instead of being stuck in the yards or on industrial spurs.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Falls Road almost running a real train!
Just wait til the traffic really picks up! I've seen them pulling 30-40 car trains in the past!
Nice catch there Broham!
Thanks Brolio! 😁
@@mattygunn693 lol!!!
The track layout there seems really weird .
Nah, just a lot going on in one small area.
Good hardworks
Good 👍
Hi, thanks for that. It was great seeing and hearing both 1500s pounding along the road like that.
Awesome the chessie system was always a favorite of mine I'm happy that csx is making these heritage units Although I think the colors still look best on A EMD though just saying lol
Yeah that goes without saying, though I don't mind a GE or a GEVO every now and then lol. I'm glad too that CSX is putting these out, and I'm glad to finally have caught this one after all the times it has evaded me in recent months! Chessie System has always been a favorite of mine, and it still bugs me that having been born in '83 I just narrowly missed their run.
Can I use the horn audio from this video for some projects?
Yes you can
Nice work brightening up those still shots other wise would not have seen the engine as well Also it's cool that those gates still have a mechanical bell great video man
Thanks!
That's awesome I did hang out there Matty do you know why they put up a fences when use to hang out there they didn't have them
They're gonna be working on the platform, no idea when though.
@@mattygunn693 thank you
Nice catch bro. I still have yet to catch that one
Thanks dawg! I was hoping this one was gonna come back through so I could get a better video of it, but of course it ended up going farther east and eventually south haha. At least the photos turned out, so that helped! Now I'm hoping the Western Maryland and Conrail units come through again. Which ones have you seen so far?
@@mattygunn693 all of them except the Pere Marquette Western Maryland and the newest one that they just came out with. Living down here they sometimes send them south to Florida within a week or 2 of being released
@@anthonyceleste6611Ahh you lucky bugger! I'd have two more under my belt (B&O and Conrail) if I actually cared to catch them back in the day. It sounds like you're in the same position with the CSX heritage units as I am with the NS ones, having only three left to catch.
Sweet catch(es), Matty! We caught the C&O, but would love to see this one too one day.
Thanks, and right on! I'm hoping to see the Western Maryland and Conrail units soon, but I guess any of the nine I've yet to see will suffice haha.
Another great heritage unit? Geez, Matt, you're on a roll!
Thanks! I figured I've missed them enough these past few months, I don't feel like letting any others slip through my fingers lol
Fantastic moonlight video, Matty!!!
Thank you!
What a great vid, Matt. My home state's own railroad still lives!
Thanks! Right on!
Hi Matty, nice work! I love the 1802’s smoke and high nose. Good to traffic increase during the summer!🇺🇸
Thanks a lot
Nice catch Matty, I never heard of that railroad before. But then there's a lot of railroads that I've never heard of that are heritage ones for CSX and NS.
Thanks! I never heard of it before the CSX heritage program either.
That's awesome cars on the siding at Kelly Ave
Yeah they still receive business from time to time.
That was enjoyable to watch. Thank you for posting.
Thank you!
That blue loco-- is that a C415??
Love the Alco action, rare catch with both engines on the falls road line only pulling 20 cars.
Great catch! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
I'm surprised by how much business there is on that line. Great coverage Matty. Genesee Valley must be doing ok.
Just wait until the corn trains for the ethanol plant start rolling through.
That was a day well spent! Very nice video. Love those Alco's!
Thank you!
Great catch! Catching switch work at feed mills, elevators, etc., is totally cool! THANKS!
Thanks!
There is that old and ratty looking block signal, the one with the letter A on it, right at the beginning of this video, at the Big Tree Road grade crossing! I did check out Google's Earth feature and spotted a diamond about 1 mile north of this location. Am wondering if this signal (or what is left of it) had something to do with governing train movements approaching that diamond (to the north).
It was once the fixed approach signal for the diamond, back when the Erie B&SW Branch crossed over the NKP main, now the Norfolk Southern Lake Erie District.
Seems like 4212 is so well suited for its work in the vibrant agricultural industry in the Erie County area. Great footage of the day to day work on this short line.
Dude, you just keep on cranking the good stuff!
Thanks a lot!
