Bobby Brown created the group with his friends in the late 1970s that included Ralph (lead singer for the group and also on this song) and Michael (guy in the blue top), Ricky (white top). The guy that looks like Jamie Fox is their first manager and choreographer. He brought in Ronnie (in the black sweater) early on. New Edition had five members. They released two albums that were successful in the early 1980s. There were tensions in the group and the group members were forced to drop Bobby from the group. Bobby went solo. They were quartet for a short while after that. Then they added Johnny Gill (main lead on Can you stand the rain) to the group late 1980s. This made the group a quintet again. They disbanded after this album and released solo works. All 6 members reunited in the mid 1990s including Bobby for an album. They released an album in the mid 2000s, without Bobby. All 6 members have been touring on and off since then.

Johnny Gill sung most of the lead on Can You Stand The Rain because they were introducing him as a new powerhouse addition to 'Edition (no pun intended). I can remember for sure, but think Can You Stand the Rain was one of the group's all time selling singles. It was a very superbly produced track. New jack swing was invented by teddy reily who worked with Bobby browns solo album and he was part of this band originally. A true innovator of sound he made r and b more modern with his flashy style and showed us you could throw a rap into the middle of a pop song or r and b song. Bobby was always a head of the curve. A real genius with a bad ass attitude.
Johnny Gill was an established Motown solo recording artist prior to joining New Edition. He use to sing duets with a female singer named Stacy Lattisaw and they sang a song called Perfect Combination. Despite this, Johnny was not getting the recognition he deserved as a singer, so when MCA Records merged with Motown, Michael Bivins asked him to join the group not to replace Ralph or Bobby Brown, but to add his mature voice to the group breaking away from that bubble gum teeny bopper image that they were known for.

I am not sure if that was Johnny Gill in the group then Bobby Brown and then he went solo BB later on. But they are the originals and they are still singing check out the American Music Awards 2021 with New Kids on the Block and New Edition they were amazing.

There are three leads but, mostly Ralph, Johnny, then Ricky. New Edition is my generation of The Temptations, you see the dance steps. Bobby Brown was already a solo artist his first single was "Girlfriend" then Girl Next Door" this album didn't do so well but, when "Don't Be Cruel" CD hit man the shit was fire BBD came out with "Poison" that had the 3 members that know one would have thought they could amount to anything or be successful because they basically were the background singers but, Ricky Bell had sung lead on some song with New Edition. By the time all of this success was going with Bobby Brown going solo, Johnny Gill solo project was a success and Ralph was starting on his project, the last 3 from New Edition had nothing they relied on the group for income but, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis suggested they form a group why not they had nothing to lose, here we have BBD a monster of a group and POISON was the beginning that song hit so hard it still hits to this day.

This is one of the best new jack swing songs produced in that era of RNB music. This was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis arguably the architect of the sound (Ted Riley popularizing the sound). Ted Ridley was influenced by the Janet Jackson Control sound. Ted Riley also did a lot of Bobby Brown hits and did most of Michael Jackson hits like "In the Closet" "Remember the Time" which you reacted which is also New Jack swing hits. Babyface Toni Braxton and other early 90's hit is also in the new jack swing category.

Bobbi had his album Every Little step tearing up the charts. After Bobbi's success I think they all went to do individual projects where BBD was formed, Ralph went on to do a solo album and Johnny went to do his My My album. All I can say if you were not talented then you could not stand a chance in the R and B industry! There were just too many downright talented group back then!

Ralph was the lead singer since they were kids. Bobby was in the group since childhood but got kicked out for being careless basically. Johnny Gill was added to replace Ralph when he left the group but when they did Can You Stand the Rain both Ralph and Johnny sang (lead) in the group - but Bobby was still kicked out. The New Edition Story biopic on BET is amazing and worth checking out!! It’ll give you a ton of history in the group - also, one of the member of New Edition is responsible for Boyz II Men!

New Edition are legendary for their choreography. The guy you said looks like Jamie Foxx is their choreographer and Ronnie DeVoe's uncle, Brooke Payne.
Ralph ( the one singing lead) is pretty much the lead singer in general. Of course when Johnny came he shared it, which he didn't mind. Ralph wasn't arrogant about singing lead BUT he was the right one for it, especially when they 1st started. Johnny was a single artist before he joined. And yep it's the same guys.
This is also from the NE Heartbreak album,, which was their comeback album post Bobby Brown. Who was also killing it in the music scene during this time.
New jack swing was invented by teddy reily who worked with Bobby browns solo album and he was part of this band originally. A true innovator of sound he made r and b more modern with his flashy style and showed us you could throw a rap into the middle of a pop song or r and b song. Bobby was always a head of the curve. A real genius with a bad ass attitude.
Johnny Gill was an established Motown solo recording artist prior to joining New Edition. He use to sing duets with a female singer named Stacy Lattisaw and they sang a song called Perfect Combination. Despite this, Johnny was not getting the recognition he deserved as a singer, so when MCA Records merged with Motown, Michael Bivins asked him to join the group not to replace Ralph or Bobby Brown, but to add his mature voice to the group breaking away from that bubble gum teeny bopper image that they were known for.
This is after the group had grown up and Bobby went solo. Ralph Tresvant is singing lead. He did most of the lead vocals until Johnny Gill joined up. You should check out some of their songs from 1983-84. You'll definitely see a difference.

Back in 2001, Aaliyah landed the role of “Sparkle.” Before she passed Aaliyah had gone in the studio to start recording the music for it. She was due to shoot principal photography right after she got back from shooting the Matrix sequels. “Giving Up” was supposed to be one of the songs she was going to sing in the movie. Whitney was a producer on the movie, back then she wasn’t even going to be in it. Then Aaliyah passed, Whitney was devastated and put the movie on hold. Then she decided to start up again, and cast Jordin Sparks as Sparkle. That’s the story of “Giving Up.”

New Edition has been around for a very long time. The original group- Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivens, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Ronnie.The first one to go solo was Bobby Brown- which led to Johnny Gill to front the band from time to time.Then Ralph T left to do solo.Then it became Bel,Biv,Devoe. Present- all still alive; from time to time still do shows all originals and Johnny Gill.Just food for thought... they are in my opinion the eighties version of the Jackson 5- love them all but, these guys- are the ultimate boy group of all time to me!

Hi Jack the lead singer was always Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill sometimes and yes this is the original group. I am not sure if that was Johnny Gill in the group then Bobby Brown and then he went solo BB later on. But they are the originals and they are still singing check out the American Music Awards 2021 with New Kids on the Block and New Edition they were amazing.

There are three leads but, mostly Ralph, Johnny, then Ricky. New Edition is my generation of The Temptations, you see the dance steps. Bobby Brown was already a solo artist his first single was "Girlfriend" then Girl Next Door" this album didn't do so well but, when "Don't Be Cruel" CD hit man the shit was fire BBD came out with "Poison" that had the 3 members that know one would have thought they could amount to anything or be successful because they basically were the background singers but, Ricky Bell had sung lead on some song with New Edition. By the time all of this success was going with Bobby Brown going solo, Johnny Gill solo project was a success and Ralph was starting on his project, the last 3 from New Edition had nothing they relied on the group for income but, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis suggested they form a group why not they had nothing to lose, here we have BBD a monster of a group and POISON was the beginning that song hit so hard it still hits to this day.

This is one of the best new jack swing songs produced in that era of RNB music. This was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis arguably the architect of the sound (Ted Riley popularizing the sound). Ted Ridley was influenced by the Janet Jackson Control sound.
Ted Riley also did a lot of Bobby Brown hits and did most of Michael Jackson hits like "In the Closet" "Remember the Time" which you reacted which is also New Jack swing hits. Babyface Toni Braxton and other early 90's hit is also in the new jack swing category.

This was 1988. New Jack Swing was 1990-1992, so this was a little before New Jack Swing. And Ralph Tresvant is the lead singer on this one (and damn near every other one lol).

Bobbi had his album Every Little step tearing up the charts.
After Bobbi's success I think they all went to do individual projects where BBD was formed, Ralph went on to do a solo album and Johnny went to do his My My album.
All I can say if you were not talented then you could not stand a chance in the R and B industry! There were just too many downright talented group back then!
