    Pure MAGIC! ❤
And that guitar solo might be one of my all time favourites.

Hoorah! My absolute favourite Cardiacs track. Like I said before - audio rollercoaster ride! Tim Smith was a fan of Bill Nelson's Sound On Sound album, so there may be some influence there. If you do progress further, I think the tracks most likely to appeal to you on the rest of part 1 are Fairy Mary Mag, Bellyeye and Manhoo.

The solo in this song was played by Random Jon Poole but it wasn't played in one take, Tim edited it together from several takes. I had the privilege of seeing this live quite a few times.

A fave! The sounds of the hard-panned dual guitars in the intro to this track always reminds me of XTC’s “Wake Up”. The Bill Nelson/Red Noise comparison is also apt. Cardiacs were contemporaries of XTC and Red Noise when they started off, and definitely came from a similar place (but went in a very different and unique direction!)

Cardiacs is one of (if not 'the') most freeest expressions of musical art you'll ever discover. Great reaction, a lot of what you said, i really connected with. Haha those kinda 'spooky dolls voice' vocals are in other tracks too...😳😅 probably Tim muckin around with a pitch shifter...🤔fairly new tech, back then...? That lead break's hilarious fun. Jon Poole and Tims concept for that glorious sonic attack, was groundbreakingly original. I love em dearly, and hold the band in my highest regard, for their dedication to the unconventional.

Cardiacs are the missing link that ties Zappa, Gentle Giant and XTC together.

One of the best albums from its decade in Prog music overall! Its stuffed with insane ideas, but they manage to hold it all together somehow throughout the whole record, its surprisingly consistent! As stated by some comment i saw on youtube, "This isn't the best album I've ever heard, but it might be the most album", and i agree with that sentiment! :P

Glad you got back to Cardiacs. I love this track, pure adrenalin rush and great fun. It took me a long time to get Cardiacs, but this track was one of the ones that got me there and there is loads to enjoy in their discography.

I think you'd prefer the earlier material where it's less dense production-wise, but just as twisty turny like Loosefish Scapegrace. Or one of their more quieter moments like Blind in Safety and Leafy in Love.

A thing to note, many of the lines used in Cardiacs' lyrics were literally copy-pasted from various sources, including books, dictionaries, movies, board-game rules, etc... It's not so much about what's sung, it's more about how it's sung.

What I like to think to really get Cardiacs is colors, I think Cardiacs are one of the most colourful and "childish" bands. Theyre very playful, especially songs like these.

  • @richardtodd6843

That music was recorded by a punk band who held a seance to obtain a song composed by Frank Zappa after his death, hired Brian Eno as producer, kept him drunk for two days and dosed him with rohypnol so he'd produce something aberrant and then remember nothing of it.
They kidnapped Rick Wakeman and told him to play some chords like he did for the Strawbs, then after 5 minutes pushed him out of the van before he could start showing off, and the next day invited Steve Hackett over and dosed him with a stimulant drug not yet known to the general public and asked him to play a solo like Adrian Belew.
Then they brought back the medium who'd found Zappa to get Freddie Mercury to coach them on vocals, but not lead vocals.
At least that's my best guess.

See the Tracks live video on TH-cam to see quite how mind blowing in yer face this tune is. I'm not much of a Cardiacs fan but it completely threw my toys out the window.
And, yes, Jon Poole's solo is something to behold!!!!

They make Gentle Giants and Zappa sound very conventional. I have seen the video of the song "Tarred and feathered", and it is even stranger! Definite interesting but no easy listening. I am impressed by your reaction. More open minded for each year!

    Hello, Eduardo here 😊
The recording sound (production) is weak. How can this be? Too much non-acoustic instruments?
I'm not talking about the music itself. It reminded me of David Tibet on speeds. It deserved a better quality so we could get some listening pleasure.
    Not for me.

He made a major contribution, but from his interview with Andy Edwards it sounds like it was a collaboration (where in earlier albums Tim Smith had more than just the final say - although those are also collaborative).
Jon talks about this at about 19:00 or thereabouts in the interview. (And yes, his part in this definitely needs to be recognized more.) th-cam.com/video/LbFfLpJUQYM/w-d-xo.html

The drums were programmed by Tim, three songs were solo Jon Poole compositions, whilst Bob Leith the drummer also had several co-writing credits with Tim. Tim was still the presiding mind behind the album.

I struggle to take to these guys... Started marginally interesting but around the half way mark I was just finding it rather tiresome. And sadly the discordant geet solo, and Zappa-esque section didn't improve it any either. Not for me.
