Especially when pre-release publicity had implied that the movie was X rated and would not be able to be released in most theaters like Basic Instinct. Both movies were eventually rated R and the rest is history.
Midnight Cowboy became the first and only X-rated film to win Best Picture, though its rating was changed in 1971 to R after the MPAA revised its ratings criteria.
Agreed. But history has shown this to have been the right choice again only my opinion but the only other movie that could have come close to it was Butch cassidy.
Sadly, just 41 years after she presented the Best Picture Oscar to Midnight Cowboy, which is still, to date, the only X-Rated film to win the Oscar for Best Picture (A precursor to the R rating still used today), Elizabeth Taylor tragically passed away due to numerous health problems at the age of 79, just a few days after the 83rd Academy Awards took place.
Biggest robbery in movie history was Dustin Hoffman not winning the Oscar for Midnight Cowboy. Best performance of his career and one of the best ever given by anyone.
Randy Bailin who did win that year ? This film was rated X in my state at the time , strange how it won when people were so uptight over certain material matter.
Everything. Class, dignity, true art, inspiration, elegance, brilliance, and an appreciation of such...what on earth has happened...where did it all go wrong?
50 years of aggressive and omnipresent advertising has succeeded in creating a consumer culture by programming us to value material possessions over creativity and art. I wonder how different our country would be if we reduced advertising by 50%.

I believe Elizabeth Taylor has a English British back ground. The Queen's English. She's British/American. She was after all married to Richard Burton the darling Welsh stud. It's really palpable that she was upset. She's trying hard to get through it. Richard Burton had just lost the Oscar moments before-- for the 6th time, and she really wanted him to win. His losing for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf two years before, when she won her second, put a strain on their relationship because it really was humiliating to him to keep losing. I'm sure she was not looking forward to how he'd be behaving after the show was over.
