Anything can be fixed, it depends on how much time and money you are willing to put into it, in this case i would buy a new trimmer, thanks for the video 👍.
The unit is just junk. The previous owner did not use any oil in the mix. I repair weed eater all the time and most owners will swear by their mothers grave they took great care of the unit. But low compression means the owner lied. What you have showed is just right on. I still do not know why people want to lie. But the weed eater will tell no lies, just as dead men tell no tales. I recently inherited a used 2006 Husqvarna 125L 28cc string trimmer from my late brother....I have no idea of who, what, when, why, or where it was worked on....but it had 95 PSI, good spark and enough fuel going through to get the sparkplug wet....but, not even a 'pop' out of it....so, after many hours..... I removed the muffler, and piston/cylinder looked OK.....so I take it apart, a small damaged area on piston and cylinder (not enough to cause a big problem)...I ended up taking the engine completely apart and after much head-scratching....I found that the cheap-o cast aluminum flywheel was out of time on the crank, it was worked on by someone who had completely destroyed the 'taper' and 'cast-in' key in the flywheel where it tightens on the crankshaft.....I replaced the flywheel, cyl/piston with genuine Husqvarna parts...now has 130 PSI and runs great...the previous Piston/cylinder and flywheel were Not Husqvarna parts....and wads of black RTV all around the 2 case halves, where there was an obvious groove for a rubber type gasket. This is a good example of why you should just use the genuine parts...e-bay, I found NEW Husqvarna cyl/piston assy for $22...flywheel for $31...and $5.99 shipping.... At these kind of prices for New genuine parts...is it worth buying the cheap stuff?? The $$ 22.00 cylinder 'kit' included the piston/ring, nice rubber seals that go between case halves, and the 2 new crank seals... I'm 72 and have been doing Industrial mech/electrical/electronic maintenance most of my adult life....buying the 'cheap-o' replacements, has caused me endless nightmares like this....if you buy the cheap-o parts...it might run, but not for long....by the time you buy the cheap-o parts, and then later the 'new-original' parts, and the labor to install them...now you've spent more $$ that a brand new piece of equipment.... I hope this helps someone...!
I hawe a Brast trimmer. It starts (100 pulls to start) but it is hard to pull the string. But when i start it everithing is ok but starting is reali hard. What can i do?
I couldn't tell you if it was savable. The damage on the piston would lead me to say no, and since it's been over 2 years, I'm guessing it doesn't matter anymore. With that said, this is the 5th video I've come across for this trimmer and probably the most informative. Greatly appreciated.

I work on small engines like this and I had a Murray that did this except it would start on every pull but instantly die, I never figured out the cause, I believe it needed a new carb or a rebuild
I got a Craftsman trimmer just like the one featured on the video,I had a rough time trying to start it until one day I decided to check out the compression,so I took the muffler out and surprisingly the Piston is in good condition but noted that the muffler bolts were lose... After placing the muffler and tightened up the screws I did a little test...it did have a better compression,added the fuel mixture and Voila... It did started the way it should be, with plenty of power... In conclusion: check for loose screws in the muffler if in doubt
It's just 'me', but I'd buy the piston and ring off eBay and do the repair...but then again, you and I both have some degree of experience and are not afraid to tear em' down. My philosophy is: if it's already broken, how can I hurt it by trying to fix it. Plus, there are used pistons and rings on eBay for $4.99 if you wanted to roll the dice and go that direction. That Troy Bilt is nice and worth some degree of $$ to save it IMHO.

It all depends on the condition of the cylinder house cause you can get some pretty cheap universal piston and ring kits from China on the internet these days. Not the best solution I know but if it gets you up and running again... Also I've seen universal cylinder houses online from as little as £10, I'm doing a rebuild myself on a Trimmer at the moment but decided to go OEM as the trimmers pretty new and was given to me for free so I thought why not.
Hey, a friend just gave me his TB trimmer b/c he says it won't run... fuel goes through the bulb & into the tank just fine; however, it won't start, even by putting fuel directly into the carb'...I grounded the plug to the block & No Spark!?! How can I tell if my challenge is the ignition module OR Stop switch??
sure, you can try and take the handle apart and disconnect the wires on the kill switch and try the test again. if you still don't have any spark then you can remove the ignition module and clean any rust on the part that makes contact with the engine and reinstall it and test it again.
Yep, that piston was severely scored and completely beyond repair. This is usually caused by either making the fuel mixture way to lean by the carburetor adjustments, or using the wrong type of oil and fuel ratio like you said, most of the time. I hope this never happens to me lol. We can't save all of them sadly ):
I don't know about you but if I got a trimmer with really bad engine damage I would try to get it to at least run. I would try to unseize the rings if the rings were stuck to the piston and I am curious to see if it would run again, but if the rings were not seized to the piston and they were how they should be and it still wouldn't run I would probably put it up as a decoration in my garage rather than throwing the engine away.
I just fixed mine started by replacing the carburetor but that was not it. For those reading the comments, check the .070 x 1.864 o-ring located on the crankshaft endcap. If it is broke there is no vacuum to pull in the fuel. Good luck!
that trimmer is definitely fixable, just needs some new ring ( and maybe a new piston while you're at it) clean out the carb and you should be good to go... looks like it ran on raw gasoline
You can buy a complete used engine for $25.00 or new one for $79 on ebay. A new trimmer is $179.00 at Lowes for one. I would either buy a new trimmer or if I had the time and felt like it save money and replace the engine they bolt right up. If I went new I'd buy a four stroke.
In my opinion it's not worth rebuilding. But that's just me. It's so easy to mix 2 cycle fuel properly I can't understand how people can screw that up...lol
its's up to the manufacturer to decide. I usually see 40:1 on low end machines while those that require 50: are much more expensive. I would assume it's related to what kind of bearings they use inside the engine . I just use 40: on every 2cycle unless its one from a long time ago. some of those require 32 or even 24 to 1 mix.

The crankcase end cap had loose screws on mine and wouldnt let it push fuel to the cylinder. I cant believe how cheap and sorry the tolerances are on the end cap also. It fits sloppy and only has a skinny o-ring to seal it. Nothing to center it good except the 2 small screws. Wont buy another one of this brand.
It's fixable but would be a whole cylinder and piston rebuild which is only really worth doing as a hobby as it takes too much labour and parts. Customers are better off buying a new one normally
I would say not savable without new piston and ring, 2 cycle rebuilds are pretty cheap but I am guessing from the damage that the cylinder i probably toast as well. its garbage.
I have the same problem with one I'm working on. I got 60 lbs compression. Now I've seen some start with low compression. This particular one I can't get anything out of it. Does putting oil in the cylinder raise the compression when testing it ? Thanks.
Reading the title, I already knew that it was a compression problem. This is VERY Simple.... there's fuel, there's spark... there is only one more element that we lack.... compression. PERIOD. This is simple logic.
Can someone explain what exactly we're looking at inside that is bad? Is it the blackening? Chipping of the metal? I don't have much experience with engines but I'm having a similar issue with mine and I wanted to check this out! Mine stopped starting well after a bad accidental knock on a fence post that killed the engine. It's been hard to start since.
the main reason why this trimmer died is that the oil gas mix was not correct. The result was a scored piston which reduces the engine ability to compress the air and fuel mix. You can see the scoring after I take off the muffler and the vertical lines on the piston and ring which shouldn't be there.
My cousin gave me the same trimmer-same problem scored piston. Tock it apart and found a broken ring, which also took a small chunk out of the side of the piston, cylinder also scored. I installed a “short block” which included crankcase, piston and cylinder head. I could not find a replacement piston, just as well cuz cylinder scored too. Cost about $60 delivered. Repair was successful. I wonder if these engines commonly break rings. Anyone know?
Out of mistake I picked up my 4 cycle gas instead of t2 cycle I buy in the can, it ran for awhile but quit on me. Then I figured out my big mistake. My weedeatter still has compression, its has resistance when I pull the rope. Is it still fixable?
Thank you for the comment. If you can install a compression tester in your weedeater it would show just how much compression it has. If it's over 55 psi then its useable. If it's under 50 then theres not much that can be done.
My trimmer just like the one in this video won’t start. I have the proper mix of oil and gas. One day while running my trimmer it just stopped and wouldn’t start again. I just replaced the spark plug with the recommended plug and gap. After watching your video - I bought the tools from your affiliate links: Compression Tester (after 3 pulls it went to 90 psi), spark inline tester -(bulb flashes when cord is pulled), and adjustment tools. The tension on the cord isn’t great but there is some. The carb screen looks clean, and when I press on it fuel goes through. So I don’t think the carb is bad. I tried pouring a little mix down the carb throat. I got the drill bit tool as well to try and use my drill on high speed to start it and it won’t go. I haven’t looked at the piston yet because the compression was high. Any ideas? Great video by the way and thanks
thanks for choosing the links, I didn't catch it, but did it run, when you put mixed fuel in the carb, and tried starting it? Also, next time, when you try and start it, Try not to choke it, and us the drill, after a few seconds, then try and choke, it. IF it doesn't start, then replace the carb.
That piston looks pretty bad....I have friends who sell and service NEW 2 stroke power tools, the damage here can often be caused (usually on chain-saws) by 'lean-seize' failure...guys crank that high speed jet in until it's just screaming fast...then after a minute or 2....all comes to a halt..... Their usual comment after asking what happened....."I don't know...it was cutting like the devil, then just stopped"..... You just gotta' bear in mind, the amount of oil going through the engine is miniscule.....
Unfortunately, the cost of repair could easily exceed the value of the trimmer. Even if you replaced the piston and cylinder, we still (at this point) no nothing about the carb, the crankshaft, or the cylinder head. I would buy a new one or at least a used one that runs.
I'm working on 25cc craftsman and it will try to start and run for about two or three seconds and then die . I've checked the piston and rings and they have scoring, but not quite as bad as your piston. I'm done with it, the owner says he never ran it with straight gas , but you know how that goes. Thnx for the video, now I can move on to a snapper s31sst that has super compression and will be an easy fix

Personally I’ve had great results with Chinese cheap reproductions parts vs OEM. Your experience may vary. But if I can rebuild with a cylinder piston kit for under $30 on eBay I’m tempted to roll the dice.
I got one. Out the dumpster ran. Needed adjustment. Put a carb from my Murray because it was a new carb. Had to pour some gas down the throat to start it. Ran like a champ. Got hot, started bogging when I squeezed the trigger. Well I adjusted the hi, no difference. Stopped running. Poured some oil in the tank. Won't start unless I pour gas down the throat but it smokes.
Remove the spark plug and look if the tip is black with burnt oil. Next Check the compression. Make sure it's not low. Your rings might be worn out making it hard to start.
I just tossed two trimmers with same problem. Low on compression generally indicts why no start. And the cost to repair, IF you can get the parts and do it yourself is the next factor to consider.
About that compression tester that you listed from your tool bag....is that the actual tester you use? I see a few reviews for that product that it may be more appropriate for a car rather than the small engines. Is that really the tester you use and does it work well for you for small engines like weed eaters? Thank you for your videos.
If I recall, I think it's from the same but they may have switched to a different supplier. Personally I don't see a real difference between the one for small engines, or one for an automobile
always remember to keep your eyes out for a cylinder kit there maybe one out there you never know and i have seen them at good prices online like Forctec

sure, anyone, you can afford, and take care of. It doesn't matter if you get a $100 or $300 trimmer, if you don't take care of it, it's going to develop problems. homelite straight shaft, or even blackmax is fine.
I have the exact same weed Wacker as in the video. It starts runs rough, seems to be skipping a lot and then dies. When it did start, would choke when throttle was pressed and roar. I always used the premixed gasoline, TruFuel 40:1 mix, was suppose to be the right mix, but I think the mix should have been 30:1 or 20:1. I was told the 40:1 was the right mix. I am not taking it apart, it's headed for the dumpster. I bought a 17 inch Dewalt 60v string trimmer that will accept Trimmer Plus tools. Came with a 9AH battery and charger. No oil, no gas and no hassle needed or necessary to get the trimmer working. The Trimmer Plus tools are looking pretty lame, so might buy the Dewalt attachments in the Spring. I suspect the cylinder is scored also. In any event I am done with Troy-Bilt stuff. Battery powered tools is the way to go. No pollution created with battery driven tools.
yes and maybe, if you have a small yard they will work, but if you need more time, the batteries will have less capacity after every season. So just buy another $100 battery then? that's a lot of money.
The problem is compression but I don’t think you need a full rebuild I would put lubricating oil in the cylinder and the rings will grab better and it should give you a few years
It's there, but hard to see....I just use the spark plug, short it to engine case (metal) and it's pretty easy to see....or you can just hold the sparkplug in your hand and you'll know pretty quick if I has spark....
Thanks for the great video with clear and excellent information! I would not have thought to look in that spot for damage to the piston. Why do you care what others comment when you know you are right? A Troybilt trimmer costs about $125 or so. If I had that unit and it had no compression I would not think twice about tossing it (or saving it for parts like you do). Rebuilding the engine would be too time consuming and the parts and time would probably cost as much as a new trimmer. Thanks again for the valuable information!

I can see a commercial unit such as Echo,Shtil,ect,being worth saving, residential equipment such as this not so much. However if this unit only required a carb rebuild or something minor then yes its definitely worth investing a little time and the fix is not that expensive. Love your videos keep em comin!!!

It's not feasible, just add $150 to the price of a new one of those cheap and get a mid grade echo, stihl or husqvarna and your problem is solved

Troy built with blown engine. Parts only, no rebuild unless you find a Troy built fanboy.

spend a while welding the piston and grinding it. heck, u cud even weld it and out it on a lathe instead of grinding.
Troy bilt say to hang it vertically, trimmer end down.

What if my engines starts but then it dies out 2-3 secs after. You think it's the carb issue?

Yes it can bump the compression up enough to help start it.
I had a chainsaw with the same problem the piston was damaged but the cylinder just needed a clean,,as good as new damaged by cheep 2t oil

Can someone explain what exactly we're looking at inside that is bad? Is it the blackening? Chipping of the metal? I don't have much experience with engines but I'm having a similar issue with mine and I wanted to check this out! Mine stopped starting well after a bad accidental knock on a fence post that killed the engine. It's been hard to start since.
the main reason why this trimmer died is that the oil gas mix was not correct. The result was a scored piston which reduces the engine ability to compress the air and fuel mix. You can see the scoring after I take off the muffler and the vertical lines on the piston and ring which shouldn't be there.

My cousin gave me the same trimmer-same problem scored piston. Tock it apart and found a broken ring, which also took a small chunk out of the side of the piston, cylinder also scored. I installed a “short block” which included crankcase, piston and cylinder head. I could not find a replacement piston, just as well cuz cylinder scored too. Cost about $60 delivered. Repair was successful. I wonder if these engines commonly break rings. Anyone know?

Had two. Both did the same even though it had the same oil/gas mixture used in my other 2 cycle equipment. I think these are junk
I don’t think it is worth fixing it. I would just buy a new trimmer unless it was expensive.
It's a very cheap trimmer but I want to rebuild later in the year.
Check the spark arrestor, because some times those will gum up. Also check that electric starter in the back. Those gum up sometimes

1:57 is it normal for the throttle switch on the carb to go full throttle when you engage the choke, because my trimmer does that
from what I've seen, on autochoke style carbs, when the choke is active, the carb will go to "hi" idle.
How much PSI needs an engine to start properly?
Ideal probably 90 but I never test freshly broken engines. Anything over 70 should start normally.
Out of mistake I picked up my 4 cycle gas instead of t2 cycle I buy in the can, it ran for awhile but quit on me. Then I figured out my big mistake. My weedeatter still has compression, its has resistance when I pull the rope. Is it still fixable?
Thank you for the comment. If you can install a compression tester in your weedeater it would show just how much compression it has. If it's over 55 psi then its useable. If it's under 50 then theres not much that can be done.

Thank you for the comment. Did you try a compression test? Even with a good looking piston the number might be low enough for it to not start.
Not for the long run, it's got to be rebuilt for that to happen.

My trimmer just like the one in this video won’t start. I have the proper mix of oil and gas. One day while running my trimmer it just stopped and wouldn’t start again. I just replaced the spark plug with the recommended plug and gap. After watching your video - I bought the tools from your affiliate links: Compression Tester (after 3 pulls it went to 90 psi), spark inline tester -(bulb flashes when cord is pulled), and adjustment tools. The tension on the cord isn’t great but there is some. The carb screen looks clean, and when I press on it fuel goes through. So I don’t think the carb is bad. I tried pouring a little mix down the carb throat. I got the drill bit tool as well to try and use my drill on high speed to start it and it won’t go. I haven’t looked at the piston yet because the compression was high. Any ideas? Great video by the way and thanks
thanks for choosing the links, I didn't catch it, but did it run, when you put mixed fuel in the carb, and tried starting it? Also, next time, when you try and start it, Try not to choke it, and us the drill, after a few seconds, then try and choke, it. IF it doesn't start, then replace the carb.
once the piston and cylinder are badly scored,You will need a cylinder and piston kit,make sure correct oil fuel ratio,and clean air filter

That piston looks pretty bad....I have friends who sell and service NEW 2 stroke power tools, the damage here can often be caused (usually on chain-saws) by 'lean-seize' failure...guys crank that high speed jet in until it's just screaming fast...then after a minute or 2....all comes to a halt.....
Their usual comment after asking what happened....."I don't know...it was cutting like the devil, then just stopped".....
You just gotta' bear in mind, the amount of oil going through the engine is miniscule.....

Unfortunately, the cost of repair could easily exceed the value of the trimmer. Even if you replaced the piston and cylinder, we still (at this point) no nothing about the carb, the crankshaft, or the cylinder head. I would buy a new one or at least a used one that runs.

I'm working on 25cc craftsman and it will try to start and run for about two or three seconds and then die . I've checked the piston and rings and they have scoring, but not quite as bad as your piston.
I'm done with it, the owner says he never ran it with straight gas , but you know how that goes.

The easiest thing would be to have the carb adjusted and after that is to replace the carb completely. When was it working properly last?

Personally I’ve had great results with Chinese cheap reproductions parts vs OEM. Your experience may vary. But if I can rebuild with a cylinder piston kit for under $30 on eBay I’m tempted to roll the dice.
I got one. Out the dumpster ran. Needed adjustment. Put a carb from my Murray because it was a new carb. Had to pour some gas down the throat to start it. Ran like a champ. Got hot, started bogging when I squeezed the trigger. Well I adjusted the hi, no difference. Stopped running. Poured some oil in the tank. Won't start unless I pour gas down the throat but it smokes.
Remove the spark plug and look if the tip is black with burnt oil. Next Check the compression. Make sure it's not low. Your rings might be worn out making it hard to start.
I saw oil running off the top of the cylinder. I tried taking the plug out but the threads are stripped so it won't come out

Yes after talking to them they confirmed that they were eyeballing the mixture last year it was being used and it was admittedly light on oil.
I just tossed two trimmers with same problem. Low on compression generally indicts why no start. And the cost to repair, IF you can get the parts and do it yourself is the next factor to consider.

About that compression tester that you listed from your tool bag....is that the actual tester you use? I see a few reviews for that product that it may be more appropriate for a car rather than the small engines. Is that really the tester you use and does it work well for you for small engines like weed eaters? Thank you for your videos.
If I recall, I think it's from the same but they may have switched to a different supplier. Personally I don't see a real difference between the one for small engines, or one for an automobile

sure, anyone, you can afford, and take care of. It doesn't matter if you get a $100 or $300 trimmer, if you don't take care of it, it's going to develop problems. homelite straight shaft, or even blackmax is fine.

these engines don't need a lot of oil, maybe pour it out and put whatever the amount the owners manual States.
one of the reasons the cord is easy to pull is because it has a ez pull starter

I have the exact same weed Wacker as in the video. It starts runs rough, seems to be skipping a lot and then dies. When it did start, would choke when throttle was pressed and roar. I always used the premixed gasoline, TruFuel 40:1 mix, was suppose to be the right mix, but I think the mix should have been 30:1 or 20:1. I was told the 40:1 was the right mix. I am not taking it apart, it's headed for the dumpster. I bought a 17 inch Dewalt 60v string trimmer that will accept Trimmer Plus tools. Came with a 9AH battery and charger. No oil, no gas and no hassle needed or necessary to get the trimmer working. The Trimmer Plus tools are looking pretty lame, so might buy the Dewalt attachments in the Spring. I suspect the cylinder is scored also. In any event I am done with Troy-Bilt stuff. Battery powered tools is the way to go. No pollution created with battery driven tools.
yes and maybe, if you have a small yard they will work, but if you need more time, the batteries will have less capacity after every season. So just buy another $100 battery then? that's a lot of money.

You can get them on Ebay for cheap. I only buy the metering diaphragm however and not the whole kit.

The problem is compression but I don’t think you need a full rebuild I would put lubricating oil in the cylinder and the rings will grab better and it should give you a few years

It's there, but hard to see....I just use the spark plug, short it to engine case (metal) and it's pretty easy to see....or you can just hold the sparkplug in your hand and you'll know pretty quick if I has spark....

Thanks for the great video with clear and excellent information! I would not have thought to look in that spot for damage to the piston. Why do you care what others comment when you know you are right? A Troybilt trimmer costs about $125 or so. If I had that unit and it had no compression I would not think twice about tossing it (or saving it for parts like you do). Rebuilding the engine would be too time consuming and the parts and time would probably cost as much as a new trimmer. Thanks again for the valuable information!

I can see a commercial unit such as Echo,Shtil,ect,being worth saving, residential equipment such as this not so much. However if this unit only required a carb rebuild or something minor then yes its definitely worth investing a little time and the fix is not that expensive. Love your videos keep em comin!!!
