Hi, i got this Error : Unable to create a plot due to: the requested quantity cannot be found in the result file. you can modify the quantity type in the result options. and rerun the study to plot. could you please help
You said to try and get all your features into blue band not to focus on a specific number but should the chart read (on the right) to the max tensile strength of the material you are using?
Hi Erik, In this case I’m talking about the Energy Norm Error plot, which is not a measure of tensile strength. Energy Norm Error is a measure of the variation of the stress and strain values in a particular element. It is purely a method to see where mesh refinement should take place. SOLIDWORKS say the following on the topic: “Apart from singularities, if a high energy norm error coincides with the location where stress results are of interest, these stress results cannot be considered as reliable, and a mesh control should be placed there. There is no specific range for this error that can be considered as a safety margin. This error will vary from model to model and study to study based on geometry, loads, mesh etc.” This is why I aim for the general “blue” in the areas of concern in the model.
Hi, very good demonstration of the common errors. i have one doubt regarding the connections. while making an assembly if we are using required mate options (like concentric and coincide mate to represent the bond between two plates held by a bolt) then do we need to specify any other connections(like the bolt option comes under the connection option ) while doing the analysis other than the default global contact option ?
Hi Suhail, Mates in an assembly only position the bodies for use in Simulation. They do not necessarily create contact conditions to define interactions. Additionally the global bond definition applies only to touching faces or faces with small gaps within a tolerance. For a bolted connection it would be advisable to manually create the No Penetration contact sets between the bolted plates to ensure the correct contact condition is being applied along with the bolt.
VERY HELPFUL VIDEO AS ALWAYS. JUST ONE QUESTION, SO THE GLOBAL CONTACT IS NOT A REAL GLOBAL CONTACT RIGHT? WE HAVE TO SPECIFY LOCAL CONTACTS "NO PENETRATION.ETC.ETC. THANK YOU.
+VLAHECO Global contact will apply to any faces that are initially touching. It is good practice to apply local No Penetration contacts for a handful of reasons. Cheers, Shivani
Hey Shivani, it is a good tutorial. You mentioned that when there are contacts between beam and shell or solid, we have to add it manually. Here are my questions. When the surface on the boundary of the shell part is touching the beam, can the no penetration be applied between beam and shell? In such case when making the selection on the shell side, do I need to select the surface as well as edges, or one edge is good enough? Another situation I encounter is that I have difficulty to treaty the situation when two shell parts normal to each other. Do I need to add bond locally? In my model it seems the global bond works. But I have to refine the mesh on the contact surfaces so that good bond will be generated, and one of the piece will not stick out of the other shell part during simulation. It involves a lot of mesh preparation. Is there other good way to do it to improve the efficiency?
Hello! I am trying to study a plate in an assembly, that is subjected to bending and buckling. Firstly I would like to know if Solidworks can run a simulation like that. An error like the one you presented in a screen shot had already occured (but I think, after closing the error window I was able to see the animation with the deformation of the plate). Also, I would like to ask about the time that a study should take to be calculated. Trying again and again using various settings, I am running studies that take 15 minutes to reach less than 10%, or stuck to 1%... Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
+Vaggelis Karvounis Long analysis times usually occur because of 1. Too much mesh 2. Too much contact 3. Too much movement. (1) Try a coarse mesh and run the plate on its own in a static study. If impossible to run plate on it's own, think about what is unnecessary in your assembly and right-click to pick "exclude from analysis". Try a Draft quality mesh for speed. (2) Again, simplify your assembly. How much no penetration contact is needed? Can you simplify with Bonded contact anywhere? (3) Too much displacement can cause instability. Try toggling the Large Displacement checkbox off, try soft springs, try lower loads, fix extra components until you start getting results. This way you can pinpoint which area of your model is taking so long to solve. Yes, SOLIDWORKS can run a bending and buckling study. Bending is covered in displacement, the Static study, available in SOLIDWORKS Premium and SOLIDWORKS Simulation Standard and higher. Buckling is covered in the Buckling study, available in SOLIDWORKS Simulation Professional and higher.
Salah Hasan SOLIDWORKS Simulation doesn't yet have the ability to remesh the components during the calculation. At least that would be necessary to monitor a crack's growth. Thank you for your comment.

Depending on the process we might try changing the the solver or adjusting our mesh to optimize our run time. Maybe even changing what is part of the calculation. These are all skills that simulation analysts develop over time and with a lot of practice. Still in some cases long solve times are unavoidable.
@@goengineer thx when ı stopped the analysis after like 15 minutes later it still gave me the soluation. and ı tried your soluation it really shortened the time. Thank you☺☺
Hi, i'd been having a problem with my nonlinear analysis, surfing the web i've find nothing so far, so why cant i define a FOS plot on my nonlinear anlysis? i really do not know if i'm missing something or if it's an error. ty so much.
Hi Otilio, You are currently seeing a limitaiton in the software for Nonlinear type analysis. Requests to include Nonlinear Factor of Safety plots have been made but not yet fulfilled by the SOLIDWORKS Software Development team as evident in this request: SPR 225220: Provide Factor of safety plot in nonlinear studies
Hi, any suggestion how can I reduce the solver time? The accuracy is not so important, I mean 650 MPa or 670 MPa are OK. I just need the predicted behavior of the component. I am new with working on simulation with assemblies, so if the solution is trivial for you, maybe it's not for me ;) (Program setting, recommended contacts, etc...) thank you very much your help! really appriciated.
Hi Turbucz, There are only a small number of ways that you can speed up the solve time of your analysis. 1. If you make the mesh coarser (use larger mesh elements) there will be less for the program to solve for. 2. If you can reduce the number of No Penetration or Shrink Fit contacts this can reduce the complexity of the calculation a tremendous amount. 3. If you can have the solver run on a machine with the fastest CPU clock speed available. 4. If your model and loading are both symmetric it may be possible to run a half-model or quarter-model with symmetric fixtures applied on the cut faces that cut it into a half or quarter model; doing this can readily reduce the calculation size down to a half or quarter of its original size.
Can you please help me with an error that I am running into with contact sets? I have a spring that is an extruded rectangle and the contact set is not seeing its opposing surface. Also I am getting a shrink fit notification when I begin the static simulation and the part does not have any assembled components, it is just a spring with a plate on top and a plate on bottom that was extruded from the surface faces. Thanks
Hi Matt, You can certainly have interfering geometry even in a multibody part file. This would give notifications to use shrink fits since that is the only contact set that handles interfering geometry in a design. You would want to insert your part into an assembly work space then go to 'Tools', 'Evaluate', 'Interference Detection' to check. From the 'Interference Detection' options make sure to select "Include multibody part interferences". I believe this will detect some amount of non-zero volumetric interference in your design that needs to be removed. This may also explain why contacts between your plate and spring are not being recognized since the faces of the spring and plate may not be perfectly coincident (this is if you are relying on the Global Contact recognize your contacts).
Hello, I tried your advice after recreating some of the geometries of the design, and when I use the 'Interference Detection' to analyze the interactions of the design it does not give me any interference. I also have recreated one of the contact sets (I started with just one contact set to be simple) and I used the 'No Penetration' and 'Surface to Surface' advanced setting. In these settings the Static Solver with a load applied to the top plate with the bottom plate fixed fails at 35.5% using a curvature based mesh. I am using a 'Large Displacement' study as prompted during the analysis. The shrink fit error did not occur within this model but it still did not get past 35.5% where the failed study did not give a prompt as to why it may have failed. Do you have any recommendations to assist my simulation? I am not sure if a non-linear study would be appropriate for this analysis. Also, the next simulation I am going to try once this one is successful involves a bending load which is more complex. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks -Matt
Hello again, I ran a nonlinear simulation with the same contact sets, and the message: "Large initial interference is detected without defining shrink fit. Would you like to ignore the initial interference" appears. One think to note is that the global contact (bonded) that originally was created from the study is still there. Do I have to create any different contact sets for a shrink fit that I am unsure where the fit message is coming from? Matt
Matt, Given the fact that you were prompted to enter "Large Displacement Mode" at 35.5% it appears you made an unstable study. You can confirm by going through this process: 1. Go into the study 'Properties' Turn on 'Use soft springs to stabilize model' Turn off 'Compute free body forces' Turn off 'Large displacement mode' 2. Suppress all loads and apply only gravity 3. Mesh/Run the study 4. When the solver stops due to large displacements and prompts to put the study into 'Large Displacement mode' declined this offer. The solver will dump what results it has so far 5. Inspect the displacement plot in the results to find the unrestrained body Given the setup you describe where the plates are interacting with the spring in No Penetration, either the spring, or the spring and one of the plates is not stable. The above process will confirm this. You will want to consider using bonded contacts in place of No Penetration or otherwise create fixtures that stabilize the system with minimum impact to the results.
Hey James, there are many reasons, but it almost always comes down to inputs. I'd say most commonly I would first check your restraints (are there enough?) and your material data (are you using a custom material?).

Hi, I get the following message whenever i try to run a Nonlinear Study: " Security device is not responding. Please install security device. Press OK key to continue. Press Cancel ket to quit from the program " I'm able to create a mesh, but not run it...
Hi Jesusismysaviour, We have seen this sort of error caused by accessing CAD data from a network and thereby writing Simulation data to a network drive. The cause for this message is that there is a very large amount of data written and read in the form of temporary files when meshing and solving a Simulation study. If the delay in these operations exceeds a certain time limit, it's possible that the "Security device is not responding" error may appear. Changing the Results folder (this can be done in the study Properties) to a location on the local hard drive to which the user has full read/write permissions could resolve the issue.
Hi, Thank you for the quick reply. I tried changing the location as per suggested, but it didn't work. Would you happen to have another trick up your sleeves? Thanks in advance.
