    The presentation of Linear vs Nonlinear is done in a very clear manner; thank you for that, Terence! But to further expand on his explanation, there are two (2) other sources of Nonlinearity that involve the following: Force and Contact. If either the magnitude or direction, that is the vector on the left hand side of the equation shown, of the force changes during its application to the body, then it requires a nonlinear solution. If any two bodies change their interaction between one another, such as coming into contact caused by the application of the load, then a nonlinear solution is required. The key metric is change; if there is any change in the linear assumption of the original equation, then a nonlinear solution is required.
    One main type of analysis capabilities available in the SOLIDWORKS Simulation packages is called "Static" analysis and NOT "Linear Static." This is a done purposefully because SOLIDWORKS (SW) wants to excel at doing Static analysis for parts AND ASSEMBLIES, which is the majority of what people design in the CAD program. Static analysis in SW Sim can handle contact between bodies, and incremental loading for a large displacement, but note that you would only be able to visualize the results at the end of the load application. You need to go to a Nonlinear calculation with SW Simulation Premium if: there is material nonlinearity; intermediate results of a solution are needed; the force vector changes; there is a change over time (i.e. dynamic); or any combination of those mentioned. Otherwise, a Static solution may suffice.

    I learnt more from this near 4min video than a whole semester of CAED. Thanks very much Hawk Ridge Systems :)

    Good explanation. However it's worth adding that there are more possible cases of nonlinearity. For example boundary conditions that change during analysis and situations when contact appears.

    In practical analysis how to start the analysis either liner analysis or non linear anlysis by only seeing geometric model?

    Hello,
    I want to run a simulation that will combine buckling and bending. Is Solidworks capable for this? I already tried to run a couple of simulations, but some errors occured. Where would you advise me to search for documentation and knowledge on Solidworks Simulations, especialy on what I am looking for. (I already know the basics about Finite Element Analysis)
    Thanks in advance.

    if we have to do Finite element analysis manually, what modifications we need in non-linear analysis? how we have to change stiffness matrix?

    • @hawkridgesystems
      @hawkridgesystems  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are considering adding material or geometric nonlinearity you will need to specify your nonlinear material properties, to consider large displacement, or both
