I worked in a guitar store for a decade or so through the 2000’s, and Schecter absolutely flew out the doors hey. Got so sick of unboxing cherry, black and white Hellraisers every damn day but there was no disputing the brand has always been a solid performer.

Yeah….. like what is happening here? I actually think his pink and black and pink models of his strat are pretty sick for what they are, but I don’t understand how someone like him gets a signature guitar, twice. Why can’t we all have signature guitars then?

Tbh although this might not be the BEST example of a change in culture, but it still is one. The guitar culture/ niche is slowly dying and merging with other genres and musical "ideologies". MGK is not your typical "guitar" guy, but for Schecter it is a good opportunity to expand beyond this 70 year old 6 string circle jerk we call electric guitar community. Electric guitar is no longer a genre deciding instrument, but simply an instrument now - a familiar sound. At first a distorted guitar would make a song "rock". Now it is just a well known texture and can be found anywhere. Before old people would freak out when they heard a rock motive. Now my grandpa listens to pop songs with sick shred solos and doesn't even notice.

Big Glassjaw fan and really happy to see Justin get his signature guitar + bass. A lot of GJ’s music has bass front and center with a lot of chunky tone. Justin said he always pushed for that since that’s where you get all the heavy low end, so GJ builds their songs around the bass/rhythm section and has guitars and the vocalist Daryl go crazy on top of it. Their most recent album sounds absolutely massive.
Also fun fact, Justin used to play LP’s and more recently Music Man Stingrays before this hence the LP toggle switch. Nice touch esp for us LP fans lol

    • @purrpocalypse
      @purrpocalypse 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I remember on Justin's OG LP the pickup toggle was broken so they'd use pliers to switch pickups between songs. I still don't understand why he went like 2 whole tours without fixing it. Honestly as much as I've always loved the band, it's been hard to stay enthusiastic between all their inactivity, and the fact that their live shows are so incredibly hit or miss. I've seen them nearly 30 times and as far as sound goes... More often than not it's the worst sounding concert you've ever been to. Even at venues that have historically great sound. Every once in a while their sound guy will nail it, but I've definitely had more bad experience than good. Never mind how many shows where they get upset about something and quit their set prematurely and just... leave. I've been to at least 5 of those.

I actually have a few friends who went to NAMM and some of them played the MGK guitar. They said it's actually surprisingly well balanced, and plays a lot better than they thought it would. One of them is the guy that produces my side project band's material, and the other is the dude that makes Neural Amp Modeler (they actually went together, because one introduced me to the other, lol) but yeah. Check out their bands, my one buddy Kalyan is in Vultures Above Us, and Steve, the dude that makes the NAM plugin, is in a band called Batsquatch, both based out of Seattle. My bands are Always Running Out, a popmosh/deathcore hybrid band based in Tacoma where I play bass, and Chained To Conform, a multi-genre web project prog metal band where I do vocals.

All these blue guitars are overkill imo though... new Intervals sig looks practically identical to a Charvel (Rich Graham or San Dimas take your pic) and then Browne puts out a blue top at the same time as Ibanez do a seafoam green type thing on a new RG. Cool colours but hardly original.

Phil McKnight made a point about Gibson's $1000 1959 Humbuckers that I think applies here: "It's memorabilia." Those fugly things are going to end up as wall-hangers for MGK fans. Fricker also made a point that if it was done as a thing for Priest's "British Steel" a lot of people would probably think it was cool, but because it's for a cock pop-metal star who's a self-decribed "savior of metal" (or similar bullshit) it's getting a lot of criticism.
IMO, it's just fugly. It's more the cutting board with a guitar neck than the Telecaster is. They could have done so much more with it, like making the edge beveled like a blade, making the thing look more like actual metal or giving it a "chrome" paint job like the "Heavy Metal" magazine/movie logo. Instead, it looks like someone's HS woodshop project.

A few weeks late now, but still: I predict that the Schecter razorblade will perform better than expected and sell out. Influencers are all going to want to demo it for the meme value, and people with too much money will want to buy it for its meme value and exclusivity. They wont make many of them either, so I the resale value will stay high (maybe even higher than MSRP). If nothing else, it's got us talking about Schecter, who I don't really hear much about most of the time.

Schecter's quality control has been sus lately... I've been seeing a lot of complaints about guitars above 1k having crooked bridges and their necks being wobbly making tuning stability a big problem. which is nuts being that they advertised having carbon fiber rods in their necks. I remember Jeff Kiesel talking about certain brands using cheap carbon fiber rods that don't do what theyre advertised and now I'm thinking he was talking about Schecter. which sucks! because I actually love the looks of Schecters. if you're a metal fan Schecter is one of those brands that screams metal in a lot of their models. 😞

Oh people are paying attention to the killer Schecter fears I am wholeheartedly. As a lefty they tick aaaallll the boxes for gear and amazing prices too.
The MGK thing is totally stupid, my lord this is their worst decision.
Thaaaaaat being said it’s overly edged as balls.
I just wish I had a Schecter to play on a daily basses…. Pun intended.
Great video as always man, still one of my favs to watch.

When I hit my 3rd year of playing I decided to treat myself and buy a 6 and 7 string km6 km7 artist it's all I wanted so I saved I also but my first real tube amp so I went and got oversized Mesa 2x12 cab and a I got a great price on a prs archon mki took my 2 years of saving and I had all of it for about a week my house got robbed and apparently someone liked my gear cause they took everything I accumulated noise gates overdrive pedals even my first guitar my Schecter C-1 sls elite in antique fade burst and now I can't even play anymore. Of course cops tell me chances are they never find them. Not to whine but broke my heart. Schecter is my favorite guitar brand and now I have to start over I saw that new km7 and I almost starting crying but anyways I guess no reason to say that except for hopefully people take care and protect there instruments cause aholes will take it. Wish they would of taken the almost anything but my guitar stuff. Schecters are great great specs looks playability. To everyone still playing be greatful. Hopefully Noone else has this happen.

Man Schecter used to be affordable. $2k for a non-Japanese import guitar? You’re getting into USA made guitar territory that will hold value.

If I ever will play guitar in an emo band, I will get that Schecter. It will look cool on stage, it was definitely not made for bedroom but for fun shows.
And I would tune it to a "sharp" tuning for sure! :D

So forgive my ignorance, I'm not interested in MGK at all and as a result know literally nothing about him. However, what's the reason the MGK Razor Blade guitar is shaped like a razor blade? Is he a big cocaine user? If that's the case I don't know why a guitar company would make a guitar that glorifies cocaine use. Is this a valid question or am I way off?

As far as I'm aware it's because his (latest) music is tailored to the emo crowd, emo girls in particular. And the emo subculture was associated with wrist cutting using a razor blade. So MGK is trying to be 'edgy' (sorry...just had to take that opportunity!) by having a guitar that looks like a razor blade to be symbolic with this darker emo trait.
So it's not just the shape of the guitar that people are hating on, the controversy is also due to people not liking the association with self harm. It doesn't offend me as you can't ban every object that may be triggering for someone. And from a marketing standpoint it's quite clever, it has everyone talking about Schecter. But as a Schecter fan, I would prefer they put their resources into making guitars that look desirable and play well...stuff like the new Keith Merrrow, John Browne and Aaron Marshall signatures. All guitars that look really smart, not cringy.
If MGK wanted a razor blade guitar he should have paid Schecter's USA custom shop to make him one. But if the razor blade does somehow attract young people like MGK fans into playing gutiar and checking out Schecter as a brand when they may have otherwise not even considered buying a guitar, then there is a razor-coloured lining!

I really do not think MGK fans are gonna pick up a guitar, especially after seeing him play

The signature tele he has with schecter was a better move/design. Overpriced to me but better than whatever the hell his new one is

Schecter desperately needs a single or double humbucker PT standard with modern features (body carves) and classic Tele colors in 750-1000$ range
