  • In today's video, I sit down with Trent Crumpler of ‪@Chestthumperoutdoors‬ to discuss one of the most polarizing topics in the hunting community - fixed vs. mechanical broadheads. We discuss some of the most important considerations when picking a broadhead for the next hunting season.

First I'd like to say that this was a great conversation on the topic of broad heads and arrow weight. There were a few things that were missed IMO. One is the sound difference between light and heavy arrows. A heavier arrow is quieter coming off the bow, and quieter in flight due to the slower speed. A heavier arrow also carries speed and momentum better at longer distances. I have shot arrows as heavy as 650 grains. I have dropped down to 547 grains in my current setup and am happy with the balance of speed vs sound. Another factor is tunability. A heavier arrow is easier to tune to a bullet hole (bare shaft) than a lighter one. On the broad heads another factor is the mechanical "slap" on impact. With a sharp cut on contact broadhead, the deer often don't know what happened as there is no slap. So they just bound off a few steps instead of instantly running.

With regards to the mechs on Elk. I think it goes back to what was mentioned at the beginning. The guys that are consistently killing elk with mechanicals are the guys that have the woodsman skills down and can get the job done regardless of the tools.

Awesome guys! Accuracy should be #1! I definitely shoot a little behind the shoulder, double lung is my jam and I’m a big 2” cut mech guy!

One of the best blood trail I ever had in my life was when I was 14yrs old 24” draw 40lb pse nova thunderhead 33yd shot , arrow fell out the deer when it horse kicked upon impact! Looked like a murder scene for 25 yds through a thicket and the deer was piled up dead bleeding out the mouth the nose and the heart! Only had like 5” of penetration on that arrow but it center punched the heart

Accuracy is everything!!!! I'd rather hit where I aim, than to wonder where my arrow is going to land. I made Soo many bad shots with fixed! He's right, theres Soo much tinkering with fixed. Sight in with fld pts, screw on mechanicals and go hunt!!!!

Or respect the animal enough to set up your bow, tune your arrows, and spend the time to make an accurate shot. I shoot broadheads every day. If your bow is tuned, your arrows are tuned and your form is up to snuff your fixed blades will hit where you aim.

Ive been shooting rage 2blades since they came out. Ive killed over 100 deer with them and i have lost a handful of deer, but never did i lose it because of the rage, in fact, rage has bailed me out a couple times on poor shots. Ive heard all the horror stories about rage but ive never had a bad experience and im not going to quit shooting them until they give me a reason to. I stay away from the shoulder blade and almost always get pass throughs and 95% of the blood trails are undeniably impressive! Shoot whatever makes you feel confident and dont let other people tell you what works for you!

That is a very good point! Shoot what gives you confidence.

Going from g5 deadmeats to mega meats this year. I have a 100 gr. Brass Insert and a 355 ibo bow, so I don't need to worry about kinetic energy even at 28" draw and 61#. I absolutely love what the exedus did, but man did they wind plane!

Bowtech and Elite have made bows easy to tune! I own a few flagship bows a year but my Bowtech is so much easier to tune than my PSE Levitate. Saying this I can shoot fixed heads well at distance with the Bowtech but have some work to do it with the PSE. I shoot mechanicals and prefer mechanicals so I tune to best of my ability and let it rip. Lost a Big Ohio Buck last year on a bad shot with a killzone. Blood was crazy for 300 yards and watched deer bed but never found him! I have killed tons of deer with NAP Killzone with good results but this deer amped up in rut took the hit. Hunt long enough you will loose an animal regardless of broadhead.

I got a core ss, the tuning is insanely easy. Brand new it had a bad tear in the paper tune. I literally eye balled the the cams to start. Went from a 2.5 in tear to 1/4 inch tear on the first try.

My buddy and I have hunted for ten years and I practice all summer and season, my buddy never shoots unless he's in the woods and he has 100% kill ratio and I definitely dont

Used fixed blades and tune each arrow to shoot correctly.
