+hmmhannah I see what you mean but your comment kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Yes it is true that the film industry is dominantly male however I don't see how you can knock Ryan for sharing this amazing content with us. Having followed Filmriot for the past few years I don't think Ryan is biased against women by the slightest. He saw a chance to get some amazing DPs on the show and used them. I understand that not having a role model might like you alluded to be uninspiring/demotivating but there are definitely some amazing female DPs out there. Like for example my favorite DP at the moment is Rina Yang (you should really look her up so much dope content.) Anyway, I could see you have an active channel as well, why not look up female DPs and create your own content on the subject. Think that might be more uplifting and productive than leaving passive- aggresive comments.
I appreciate your comment Superlke, I too have watched Film Riot for many years and I am well aware of many, many talented female filmmakers. This title implied that there was advice coming from the industry pros and it was disturbing that they were made up of only white men. I highly doubt you will understand this point of view and it may not seem productive from your point of view to point out the lack of diveristy shown in this video, but I feel it is.
I'm sorry, but the fact of the matter is that there are more male professional cinematographers than female ones. Of course there are great women in the industry, but just like its cousin "photography", cinematography seems to be preferred by men when you get to industry level work. I've been a pro-hobbyist photographer for almost 10 years now, and I've worked in many cities around the world, yet only a fraction of the pro photographers I meet are actually women. There are many women who enjoy doing it as a hobby and many women who join courses and study it, but very few actually move on to the next step and do it as a full time job compared to men. My hypothesis is that photography (and cinematography) is quite a technical job, and men are generally more interested in technical work than women are (biologically speaking), but there are of course individual exceptions to that.
Oh my god, you guys are so close to 1 million subscribers! Honestly there's no channel I can think of that deserves this more than Film Riot! I've been following the show for so long now and seeing you grow over the past years has been amazing. I hope you will make the one million within this year! Keep up the great work that makes me laugh and teaches me something awesome everytime! Greetings from your biggest German fan!
Worked in locations on the new Trainspotting film this summer and can honestly say that watching Anthony Dod Mantle DP was one of the best experiences ever. It's so clear that he's not just a 'camera person' and he's deeply involved in the entire filmmaking process. Plus he's also insanely friendly and goes about taking pictures of everyone with his Leica most of the time.
congrats guys, I found you 5 years ago have been subscribed since. I don't get to film all that much anymore since my filming friends moved away, but I really appreciate all that you have taught us. Without you guys I never would've filmed anything.
I remember when I shook hands with Michael Chapman after a Q&A his wife held at my school, UNCSA. He used to be a professor there and every now and then he will come back around. I told him how much I respected him and he simply said ahh and shook my hand, such a humble guy he seemed tired of hearing compliments haha.
It amazes me that of all things technical... Managing people and coping with egos / politics seems to be a common theme no matter which profession you choose.
Loved to hear so many different voices from the industry. A video on finding work in the industry from the pros would be another great video, if you guys were looking for another video idea
It's interesting to see the differences in opinion based on their personal experiences. It goes to show that you have to pick and choose the advice you decide to take.
Congrats on your millionth subscriber, guys! BTW< Emily killed me through the advertisement. The punching him so hard he's going to taste his ankle line made me LOL. I WILL be using that with one of my students. Thank you.
I worked on my first movie this past summer. It's called "Columbus" featuring John Cho and Parker Posey. What an experience that was. I was definitely the youngest crew member. Lol The days were long and the nights were even longer but I loved it.
WeAreOneTv I live in the city it was filmed in. However I didn't know anything about it because they kept it pretty low-key. About a month before they were set to start filming a buddy and I shot a quick video with just a bunch of beauty shots around the city. We were hoping to get a few thousand fews on Facebook but wound up getting over 50k. The Director of Marketing for the city saw it and asked if we'd be interested in working on a movie. Like I said I didn't know anything about it but obviously said yes. She gave me an assistant's number for one of the production's companies and that's how I got in. It was pretty crazy. haha
I am Kinda confused over this....Anybody can help..what do you when you want to edit an interview scene where you have multi camera work but all the Audio of each lapel mic is going to each camera..so u dont have a master audio..during timeline editing how do u deal with this specially when u have to use multi cam editior in premier pro..cos each camera u take has sound of only the person using the lapel..the rest is ambiance noise..need assistance quick pls
Hey Ryan, can you tell me what you are thinking about the film "Arrival" if you have seen it. And if you haven´t, get up and go to the cinema!!! I really enjoyd watching the film. Marian (from Germany)
This is awesome! Thank Mr. Ryan! You guys are by far my favorite TH-cam channel! Are you guys doing a 1000000000 subs video, and could you do a draw my life video, that'd be awesome! Thanks guys!
At 5:40, I wish he WOULD talk about big CGI-heavy films…er..ahem….I have a certain one in mind….a movie that's coming out next year….it involves apes….😁
Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Space Jam... the holy trinity of filmmaking.

You guys always do great ads.
I know right
so much diversity in the film industry, so inspiring.
hmmhannah it is really sad. But I hope you aren't discouraged. You can create the diversity you want to see.
Tigbemileke Ojo thank you for your comment! No I am not discouraged 😊
