I have two Sony A6300s, and I've been considering selling one and investing in one of these. Building out the kit would take time, but after spending even a bit of time grading 8-bit footage I'm so irritated by the loss of quality that I'd like to give this a shot. Maybe one of these days I'll rent one to try it out.

Waited 7 months for my pocket and it was worth every minute. The picture quality is like magic and the lowlight is even better than I expected even at 6400 iso. The footage is extremely stable when grading and almost impossible to break. Only disadvantages are power and media, but they can be solved with a samsung T5 and powerbase edge if you’re on budget. Happy filming
My beginner camera that I bought when I was first getting into video work was a Canon T3i back in 2010/11. That cost me the same as what this does. It just keeps getting better and better to be a beginner, this is a great time to be looking for quality affordable cameras.

Finally, heck yeh!! Right when I was about to pull the trigger on the BMPCC4K I saw some very interesting Zcam E2 Videos and now am back to square one! Some of those shot's were quite amazing, congrats!!
@@omar_b_here So the pocket 4k can do 4k60p without any crop, but in order to do 120fps it crops down to 1080p which is effectively a 2x crop on the 4k sensor

I had the original and hated it, mainly because of the MFT mount and sensor. Does this one handle low light anywhere near as well as a GH4 or dare I say it...A7S
The dual native iso kicks ass. While you can’t push the iso quite as far as you can on the a7s, you have MORE than enough room to push the lowlight on this camera.
Awesome. I've had one since late last year and it's been such a beast. The screen is angled so it's surprisingly viewable when you're holding it low. The dual ISO is incredible and the menu interface is just perfect. Once you get an external battery you're set.

One tiny thing to note - shooting 120p *is* actually cropped, as is 1080p in general. Overall, though, excellent review. The Pocket 4k is an INSANE camera - absolutely love mine. & I just absolutely LOVE the continuation of the ads!
Am I missing something? I knew that 120p was only possible in windowed mode...but normal 1080p at 24 fps is cropped as well??? Never heard that one before. I'm pretty sure Blackmagic is smarter than that, if they wanna stay in business.
@@morgondickerson2086 ah, my bad. If shooting RAW, anything 1080p is cropped. In ProRes, it shoots full sensor, no crop. 120p is cropped, regardless of format.
A cheap alternative to the metabones adapter is the Viltrox Speedbooster. I used it on my last video with this camera and it blew me away! LOVE this camera.
Mohammed Benziane not sure... I’ve never needed to autofocus. I manually set my focus each shot. I believe it’s compatible on most lenses though. But remember, there’s no continuous autofocus on this camera. Just focus, that’ll set the focus for you. You’ll still want to zoom in to check your focus anyways

Great review. We use the Pocket on nearly every shoot now and love everything except the battery life. We tend to do a lot of rolling takes of our actors doing improv and being able to shoot as long as we want onto an SSD has been a game changer for us
Been shooting with this since Christmas this past year. LOVE it. When you work around the battery using an adapter and buy into the right memory card option for you, it really is the kind of micro, easy-to-use beauty I'd expect from Blackmagic Design. I'm thrilled with what I've been able to pull from it when I really go ahead and prepare shots, really push the camera. We're able to get unbelievable images from it. I'd venture to say for 1200 bucks it's the best in it's class by far.
I've been looking for your thoughts on this. I'm glad I waited. Because this is the perfect price range for me and all the quality and features I should need for now.
Definitely recommend getting a v-mount for it to connect via the Weipu connector. My v-mount setup allows me to use the cam all day on 8+ hour shoots without swapping batteries once.
Have you guys checked out the ZCam E2?? I think it's the biggest competitor to the Pocket 4k. For an extra $600-700 you are getting almost the exact same sensor, but with a much better processor, better form factor, and built out of metal. Up to 4k 160fps uncropped and 300mbps. Absolutely loving it. Bought it after not being super happy with the Pocket 4k mostly in terms of build quality.
@@MichaelBallif did cam + lens tests recently for some interviews. Tested the red helium, ursa g2, pocket cam and z cam. Z cam reminded me of those dreaded Sony colors that shift magenta-y. Helium is in a world of its own but I really like the g2 color and the pocket isn't far behind it.
@@salvadorvega9834 I have not found that the case at all. I came from a RED Scarlet MX and C100. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the ZCam's color.
@@FTGTapGod the great thing is that each eye is different. Director chose to go with the helium off of a blind test, it does have a ridiculous amount of dynamic range which helps too. There's a few really good G2 tests on here too that show the camera in a good light too.

Great review, Ryan - as entertaining as ever! One overlooked gem of this camera though (IMO) is timecode. Plug your TC device into the 3.5mm audio jack and it will automatically switch to a TC in port, writing TC into the file and freeing your mic and mini XLR ports for audio. That's something you just don't see in a device at the price point!

You are first video to show low light test I have seen. I had GH4...loved the camera, but low light was terrible. Was surprised how good the low light was on BMPCC. How is the auto focus? I do a lot of run & gun. Thx for the review.
I love this camera! It was a pain to get (in Europe), no store had it in stock and all online shops had preorders reaching up to november, so I ended up purchasing one from Ebay (unused). I've built my rig with the Samsung T5 1TB (~160€) attached via USB-C (3h of 4K 60fps) and a PowerBank attached vis the 12V-20V DC input (~3.5h recording time!). So neither storage nor power is a problem anymore.

I’m in school right now for Digital Media Production because I want to get into filmmaking. At the moment I have the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 because that’s the cheapest DSLR I could find that shoots in 4K (I’m sure there are cheaper options somewhere but so far the Canon I’m using is killing it). However, once I get the chance or the price rolls down on the Blackmagic, I’m definitely gonna get one.

Great, great review. But I don't think you can get 120 fps without cropping on the sensor. I cannot do it... I share your excitement guys. I Own original Pocket camera and a month ago my Pocket 4K arrived. I just love them both :) Not gonna sell an old one ever. It's still a beast for interviews and generally a Bcam for Pocket 4K.

Have used it for about 10 months... and I do confirm that it is a small beast. The update of braw changed the game. The only fix remaining is the issue of dealing with bright red lights.

well i just got my blackmagic 4k for 1500$ came with Sigma 18 -35mm & laowa 7.5mm f/2 mft lens with a 0.71x speedbooster, cant wait to use it. CHEERS!

I share your excitement guys. I Own original Pocket camera and a month ago my Pocket 4K arrived. I just love them both :) Not gonna sell an old one ever. It's still a beast for interviews and generally a Bcam for Pocket 4K.
Is this camera still great for filming a full film movie?
Great review. I like what you all had to say about the camera. I would like to pick up a used BMPCC. I don’t need 4K at this time but 1080P RAW shooter would be fun for more dynamic range. Thank you again for this awesome review. I can’t wait to see more of your videos and shorts.

Thank you for validating everything I've read about this camera. I was so excited when i saw the specs but I was waiting for a legit review on this camera and Im so happy you guys did one! Im personally a canon user for my work but seriously, i might just but this for fun haha! That being said, I've wanted to ask you guys for a long time.... can you please please please!!!! do a review on one of the kinefinity cinema cameras?I would love to see that in action from Film Riots perspective. Phenomenal acting on the domain.com ad spot.
Have used it for about 10 months... and I do confirm that it is a small beast. The update of braw changed the game. The only fix remaining is the issue of dealing with bright red lights.
