You have great taste! I listen to everything as well. 38 (eek) year old white woman and I really have no limit to what I like. Screw the people who think I listen to weird genres for my age. Music is limitless. Sheryl's voice is clear yet raspy, soulful yet Americana and country yet rock. She's the PERFECT artist for those of us who listen to lots of different genres of music. :)
This song reminds me of a specific 90s feeling --- like being in a coastal town in 1998, in a junky car, waiting for traffic to pass, lots of tourists around but youre a cool local, hair blowing with windows down, on your way home stop at a gas station for cigs and a yoohoo, back to your apartment to get ready to meet some friends at a local beach bar, putting your favorite lip gloss on, and then smoking a cig on the porch watching the pastel sky shimmer all around you
When this song was a hit, I was a jobless teenager who just left school daydreaming everyday about where in the world life was going to take me. I look at planes in the sky and question myself if there ever will be a day when I escape the poverty and the hard times. Today I live comfortably after working 23 years. It’s amazing how music takes you back to a specific point in your life.
I’ve been on a Sheryl Crow lately, she is flawless, gorgeous, inspirational and talented. She is one that definitely deserved getting out in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
I first heard this song as a kid in the ‘90s. Listening to it now really hits different now that I’m 35 and have experienced my fair share of heartbreaks. If I had a chance to go back in time and forever stay in the ‘90s, I would. I miss this kind of music when artists sang about real emotions. It’s a shame that music isn’t like this anymore.
I've had the same experience. Loving music as a teenager and having no idea of what it was about until years later. Proof that my parents had nothing to worry about.
The 70s did truly rock, revolutionary, no one would argue that. But the 90s took rock to another level. Another new direction. And this beautiful 😍 rocker was truly unique in sound and lyrical poetry.
@@lynettadaniels9152 I love it! Same here 60s too. I'm so glad I grew up when I did. Amazing music, times, OMG concerts!!! We splurged in 73 to see Led Zeppelin, tickets were $20 if memory serves. Way better than she was given credit for? You make it sound like she hasn't sold millions of records, won a shitload of awards, gotten great reviews, or sold out countless concerts. Give your head a shake, coolguy
@@chiefscheider I think what he meant was that she's not very talked about currently. Then again you don't here much about anyone from the 90s anymore.
Your my favorite mistake..Did you see me walking by?? Did it ever make you cry??? Who's still rocking 2020?!?. The hook/chorus is beautiful .... Sheryl crow is beautiful ❤🧡
Back in 98 (I was 19) when this would come on the radio, in stores, etc. I'd always say "it's my song!" and I heard it the other day in a store and couldn't help but smile. Time flies!
I'm 31 was 8 that year but man me and my dad listen to this music so hard. It's a bond that can't be broken. Now we drink and listen to 90s...man. I miss the 90s time flies so damn fast
Tell me I’m not the only one that never realized how beautiful Sheryl Crow is until now after having watched this video for the first time in 20 years...
The lyrics are poetry and I think everyone can relate to that one relationship that was messed up at least on one level. I personally think that makes for a great song.
I'm 33 and have loved this song for 20 years now... and I swear every few years when I hear it again I hear an entirely different version of the same story because of my own life experiences. Her lyrics are so excellent.
I appreciate the music when I first heard it as a child. It was when I was older when I paid attention to the lyrics. It hits differently, especially, when you're going through it. I'll always miss my favorite mistake.
Sheryl Crow - the full package - beautiful, incredibly talented: singer/songwriter, musician, record producer, actress, activist. She plays guitar, bass and keyboards....
Genuinely one of the best songs of the 90's, from one of the best American artists of the 90's. I hadn't heard this for a while but immediately was taken back to my teenage years.
This song is so amazing. My favorite part has always been the beautiful melody of the outro when she sings: "Did you know, could you tell You were the only one That I ever loved Now everything's so wrong Did you see me walking by? Did it ever make you cry? You're my favorite mistake You're my favorite mistake You're my favorite mistake"
Let's sound like a boomer, but ... 90's were the last decade when there was that much detail in pop/rock song arrangement. Starting with the cool slide into the opening guitar lick, no wall of sound at all, subtle guitar/organ parts all over the place, and finally her vocal performance. I don't want to start a discussion about her voice but here, she really sells the emotions of such a breakup and it's a rollercoaster ride like your feelings are during such a phase. My favourite parts are the "It's 6 AM..." one with that grit on her voice and indeed the mentioned outro part, too.
it gets better and more sophisticated every time. this is not some simple dumb ass bs rock/pop song people, this is rock and roll history, a piece of the best there ever was and we're lucky to be here to hear it. thank you sheryl crow. it's gift that keeps on giving. i can't say enough.
Me too mate , have always been a fan of her material since the first time I've seen/heard anything from her, vividly remember the tv show top of the pops (uk) Thursday night, 7pm, she's appeared on tv doing 'all i wanna do', circa 93/4, instantly impressed with what I'd been treated to, ever since I've maintained my opinion of all she has produced is total authenticity and from a talented musician who loves her work and has respect for the sounds before her and continues doing her own thing without cheating and following fads/trends , she's always been the real deal and an absolute class act also, love her.
I really like Sheryl Crow, and this is by far my favorite thing that she's ever recorded. It rocks with a great Keith Richards' style rhythm guitar playing, it has a certain funky approach with attitude, playfulness, and sex appeal up the wazoo (at least speaking personally). And, on top of all that, the song's lyrics capture what's it's like to feel trapped inside the strong pull of someone despite knowing full well that they're tearing you down.
Still listening to this in '23. Found myself singing parts of it randomly throughout my day! Lol. Sheryl Crow is what I grew up listening to with my mom. Childhood memories right here! Her music is so simple.
My favorite song of hers. I don't care what age or gender you are. It applies. You will never forget your Favorite Mistake. Hopefully, they haven't forgotten you.But they'll still be your favorite.
I love her composition. It's like a beautifully winding road. You don't know where you're going or where you'll end up, but it's bound to be beautiful.
That 3- note riff is so perfect. Captures 1998-1999 so perfectly for me. Not sure if Sheryl or Jeff Trott wrote that riff, but it is so emblematic of that time frame...just perfect.
Had one , kept making it, loved her forever, thru thick and thin. Watch from the sidelines as she went from one marriage to another always hoping she’d see me, remember me. It finally got close when she lost her last husband to suicide (his demons caught up and she couldn’t stop them). It was too late for us. We were both our favorite mistakes and now she’s gone (Alzheimer’s). Sheryl Crow’s song is all I’ve got. Thank you, ma’am.
What a beautiful song. One of the best pop tunes of the 90s. So evocative, gorgeous melody, great lyrics. I haven't heard this in a while, and it's even better than I remembered.
If you get the chance to see her LIVE, GO! She is BRILLIANT! I hope she sees this! She played tons of instruments in 97 at the Blossom Music Centre! She was FABULOOOUS! WOW That voice!
Musical Masterpiece, about a love that was toxic and she wanted to stay with him. She got lessons learned. He taught her what she doesn't want from a man, cause she learned her lesson. She was so in love that is why it's her favorite mistake, cause she really didn't want to let him go but she had too.
What a mind blowing way to start an album! The musicality on this album is so stratospherically high. She did her best work producing herself. Too bad she doesn’t do that anymore.
A musical genius. I was about to go to a Beatle song. Then Sheryl Crow added this. Sheryl Crow is an outstanding musician that ranks with the very best!
When I was a kid and Mom and I were on a trip one time driving we had this CD blasting on repeat the whole way, for whatever reason as a curious kid I was asking questions about where kids come from and being planned and what not. Then my Mom explained that I was a surprise but the best surprise ever, and in the most innocent way I was her “Favourite Mistake”. Forever more that was our song! I love you Ma ❤️
I legit use this as a reference track in every new space I mix in. Such a perfectly produced piece. If you haven't already I encourage you to listen closely to the secondary guitar tracks, the tambourine, and that beautiful organ.
listened to this for the first time in a number of years on my way to the mall to shop today... caught myself singing along in my car... this never gets old for those with a broken heart..makes me wanna sit in the corner with my guitar and strum a few notes and cry a few tears
Perfection. Lyrically, musically, and psychologically. She understands the human heart. Just a masterpiece. And, I just learned, this is her favorite song to play live. That said, she's written a dozen gems. I mad in love with her.
WOOW ... powerful statement... It's funny how as we get older and see the intellectual decline of the human species we realize we're simply living and illusionary time-bubble. lol
I was 24 when this came out. One of my all time favorite songs. Love the album and love Sheryl (as an artist). This song stirred emotions then, can still stir them now even though I’m happily married .
I remember hearing this song in late 1998, was 16 years old, junior in high school. Sirius XM on their 90s channel today is having countdown of top 30 songs this week 12/17 of 1998, this song was number 17.
Yes agreed . An for some reason I can't get enough of this song sence I heard it come on the radio other day . I totally forgot about this music or songs from her

What a mind blowing way to start an album! The musicality on this album is so stratospherically high. She did her best work producing herself. Too bad she doesn’t do that anymore.
One of my favourite 90s songs. I’m 49 and I’ll love this forever
my favorite Sheryl song, takes me right back to my 1998. croatian army days&dawns...❤️🍀
Eric Clapton's favourite song as well
She's class and so are Crowded House. I believe they are playing on the same stage in England next year. What a treat
A musical genius. I was about to go to a Beatle song. Then Sheryl Crow added this. Sheryl Crow is an outstanding musician that ranks with the very best!
an outstanding musician WHO ranks with the very best
This just reminds me of THE best time for amazing female singer/songwriters. The 90's were the best, in so many ways.
Very similar to my story with my son. At his wedding, this was our groom/mother dance!
I legit use this as a reference track in every new space I mix in. Such a perfectly produced piece. If you haven't already I encourage you to listen closely to the secondary guitar tracks, the tambourine, and that beautiful organ.
Its the broken record in the beginning that gets me...
I was 18 when this came out. God one of my favourite songs of the era.
Agreed. I was 15, I think?
I heard it was about Clapton, but am not sure if that’s true.
listened to this for the first time in a number of years on my way to the mall to shop today... caught myself singing along in my car... this never gets old for those with a broken heart..makes me wanna sit in the corner with my guitar and strum a few notes and cry a few tears
Let's admit it. It's on loop for the fifth time already.
I'll play it over and over for hours 😃
@@EeicBajen-me6nl I love you.
Remarkably brilliant song, absolutely left feeling spellbound by her alluring voice ❤
I don't know why but these guitar chords have stuck in my head lately. I haven't listened to this song for years. And now I listen to it every day.
Damn, how great are these lyrics???? Seriously. BRILLIANT. just brilliant.
the lyrics and the melody and the instruments and the phrasing and....everything about this song is amazing
Perfection. Lyrically, musically, and psychologically. She understands the human heart. Just a masterpiece. And, I just learned, this is her favorite song to play live. That said, she's written a dozen gems. I mad in love with her.
@@heavnnnsent Great song, great singer.
Outstanding
Oh lyrica!
Pure genius 💯 The lyrics, the composition, vocals, flow....EVERYTHING!
I was a kid in elementary school with my radio next to me at night playing while I slept and I remember this song coming on all the time.
These were the days when life was real to me.
Real talk
WOOW ... powerful statement... It's funny how as we get older and see the intellectual decline of the human species we realize we're simply living and illusionary time-bubble. lol
So life is no longer real to you?
Wtf.
Oh no

I was 24 when this came out. One of my all time favorite songs. Love the album and love Sheryl (as an artist). This song stirred emotions then, can still stir them now even though I’m happily married .
agree, I am right there with you
A moonlit late summer night in my 73 plymouth, with the windows down, cool air, lonely road and this album playing. Life was good.
How is it now?
Teenage years for me and what great music was around back then! What is Sheryl doing these days?
Back in 98-99 when I would hear this anywhere, I’d say “it’s my song!”
2020, I’m 40 yo now and I still love this tune :)
I remember hearing this song in late 1998, was 16 years old, junior in high school. Sirius XM on their 90s channel today is having countdown of top 30 songs this week 12/17 of 1998, this song was number 17.
Such a beautiful song ❤the lyrics, the harmonies the whole damn thing 👏👏👏
I guess this is kind of a sad song, but it invigorates me because it is such a great song with an upbeat vibe. Great vocal and arrangements!
T is for timeless
Yes agreed . An for some reason I can't get enough of this song sence I heard it come on the radio other day .
