Great vid, Chris. If you paint your calipers a bright color like blue or red, it's best to paint them silver first. Makes the color pop and uses much less coats of actual color.
@@942doc1 Yea, it's easier for a color to pop more when it's applied on a lighter color. If you spray, for example, red over black, it's going to take more coats to be as bright as red over white
@@942doc1yes if you notice on brighter color paint they use black primer on factory. Sometimes if you paint match a part of a car and don’t spray a dark primer it’ll make the paint to bright

You can use petroleum jelly to cover any parts where tape won't work, such as the bleeder valve or the piston rubber inside the caliper. wipes off easily after you're done.
What do you feel is the benefit of 600 grit on rusted metal? I would recommend beginning 40 or 80 and ending with 100 or 120 for what you’re doing. 600 is a final primer sand before paint, all you did was wear out the 600 on that rusted calliper.
Tip if you're taking them off entirely like I did (to sandblast them and get old chipped paint off): use polymorph to fill in all the threads and holes you want to mask. It's a kind of plastic that melts clear in boiling water, can be molded and squeezed into place then cools and hardens white. Squeeze some into threads, and pinch a tag at the top so you've got something to grab later. Now your sandblaster won't damage anything!

He used really high finishing sand paper. I'm not sure even 320 would be good for such a rust-heavy job. I would start between 80-100 and finish 200-240. Maybe a fast 320 if I was really concerned about looks.
Paint in the bleeder is a no-no... but serious the spray for caliper paint is cheap enough why use the regular high temp and not a gloss where the dirt can be wiped off easy and not sick?
Another ChrisFix video that has inspired me to do more mods on my car. I think it’s cool to walk up to my car when it’s parked and to see the painted calipers. I wish I could see them on the freeway too but I’ll have to hope that other drivers notice and appreciate.
Brake clean is one of my favorite liquids. :D Btw, it would be good to cover the bleed valve, piston and the screw that screws the brake line to the caliper.
Id just use brake cleaner to clean then spray it. Putting gray primer does help making the final paint look better. Such as red.otherwise would look dark red. Instead of sanding try drill with wire brush attachment.
Good job on the videos as usual Chris 💯. Just as a heads up they have the high heat clear gloss spray I’ve used in the past on top of the high heat black spray. It looks new and shinny! Just a little something I came across in case you wanted to share with your audience

+Bourne Accident Yes I was happy to see that too. I have been doing that for years in addition to ALWAYS using jack stands. I still see people crawling under their cars with only a jack supporting it!
You absolutely need to remove the brake hardware, or “pad clips” as you called them. They allow the pads to move smoothly and getting paint on them doesn’t allow proper movement and could cause premature pad wear along with rotor overheating.
He said he would care more for his Corvette. I do hope he drives his Corvette into a proper garage to get the calipers sprayed. I have seen bodge ups before but this was far the worst. Preparation is key for a re-spray but he forgot to cover the seals from the paint. Let alone the fact that you should remove the calipers from the brake line...
What I want to know is why do car manufacturers not have rust protection on all of these car parts that are essential for safety. I just changed the disks and pads in my car today and I had to do so much clean up as the calipers were rusted to hell seems to me like this could be avoided with little to no effort or cost.
+linkto thepast It simply does not matter if those parts are rusty or not, they're solid cast iron so they won't rust trough. Rust on them might look bad but it won't hurt functionality.
You have to remember manufacturer's mass produce cars, so an increased production cost of just $1/car for someone like Honda would lead to over $1million in extra hard costs. They are going to save as much money as possible for things that are unnecessary. The media, for example, would not care about this at all.
Remember black paint doesn't increase whp, if you want +5 whp per corner you will need to use red paint.

+ChrisFix it's amazing how fast your hands move! You're like a pro! :P great video as always bro. Keep up the great work. ✌
i think he's flash gordon
And then repeat the whole process for the other three wheels :D
haha
+ChrisFix Hi Chris,
How can I remove the paint later if I want to? (:
You dont have these on the back man... Only front.
@@blazzerex most cars these days also have disc brakes on the rear
You know it's an older CF video when the greeting is two octaves lower lol but the info, editing, safety tips, and directions are still solid gold!
“Take your time with this last step, and we’ll be spray painting in no time.” -> proceeds to sand like the Flash. Lol
Hey
I wish calipers came factory painted, it can save everyone a hassle for a while. Barely 6 months since I got my GT, and there's already rust there D:
I know right?!
Another ChrisFix video that has inspired me to do more mods on my car.
I think it’s cool to walk up to my car when it’s parked and to see the painted calipers.
I wish I could see them on the freeway too but I’ll have to hope that other drivers notice and appreciate.
I always use matching spray can caps to prevent the piston grommets from being painted. And always cover the rubber brake lines very carefully!
Just take them off and swap out the lines for beaded.
Rubber lines perish and need to be replaced anyway so may as well .
@@matthewdorricott4514 Sure, just in case the lines are in good shape cover up. 👍
And the bleeder valve?
Just cover the valve with tape or use small rubber hoses to cover
Brake clean is one of my favorite liquids. :D
Btw, it would be good to cover the bleed valve, piston and the screw that screws the brake line to the caliper.
So cool to see that chris increased his video quality over the years
Chris is all about details... changing your gloves before cleaning the brakes who does that ? Like it's awesome hahaha
Id just use brake cleaner to clean then spray it. Putting gray primer does help making the final paint look better. Such as red.otherwise would look dark red. Instead of sanding try drill with wire brush attachment.
+john argue Thanks for the tips John!
+ChrisFix I work at a tire shop where they paint brakes once in awhile.we just clean it,prime it, paint it.comes out nice.
Can the primer stays on even when it's hot?
+jay SP theres paint that handles lots of heat. including primer. I believe can handle 500 degrees. it'll say on the spray can.
john argue v h
U r like Mike Tison of fixing painting... U r the best... Worlds are less
I wish I could sand that fast.....
DjRjSolarStar It takes years of practice hahaha
XD
ChrisFix If you have one, a dremel with a wire cup attachment makes cleaning the calipers much, much easier vs the wire brush.
ASkinnyLlama Thanks for sharing! That is a good idea!
ASkinnyLlama ChrisFix or the dremel wire wheel attachment also.
Good job on the videos as usual Chris 💯. Just as a heads up they have the high heat clear gloss spray I’ve used in the past on top of the high heat black spray. It looks new and shinny! Just a little something I came across in case you wanted to share with your audience
I love the video but just a quick tip, a wire brush bit on an impact drill makes this 1000x easier. Thank me later
It’s hard to get a mask and alcohol now that we have corona virus 😷🤧😅
@ChrisFix You are fucking awesome bro .. you don't know how much money people can save by watching your videos
Geographic [] tbh I think he does know...
How does ghis save money? Actually spends it. And the point of his channel isn't "cheap ways to fix your car"
It's yow peopel fix there car, and how your ment to
Imagine 6years and recommending❤️ thanks chris❤️❤️
Man he sounds so different then today he’s so happy and enthusiastic
Or just more confident
@@jm4gaming886 Or sick
what spray paint could i use for my skid plate so it wont rust or chip ?
Love your videos, I didn’t have the patience to hand sand mine, I just covered everything including the car and sand blasted them, worked perfectly.
Awesome Chris Fix!
I should buy new calipers.. I don't think I can sand 4 super rusted calipers....
+DR You can use a tool like this which makes it easy: th-cam.com/video/n5FJDgcdii8/w-d-xo.html
I use it in this video: th-cam.com/video/u-TNsO33eqQ/w-d-xo.html
+DR you can always set up a small sandblasting boot. I use it for everything.
+DR brass wire brush would work wonder for this.
+DR I thought so too until i found out how much new calipers cost ._.
you guys are awesome, or i was stupid. I bought dremel last year for sanding and buffing other stuff that I completely forgot .. lol shiny newly painted wheels and calipers coming on the way!!
Oh, how the times have changed. I still love the old vids, tho!
Indeed lol
I noticed the tires under the car while it's up in the air. That's just a smart thing to do.
That's a logical thing to do
+Bourne Accident I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. That is smart idea, im going to start doing that.
+Bourne Accident Yes I was happy to see that too. I have been doing that for years in addition to ALWAYS using jack stands. I still see people crawling under their cars with only a jack supporting it!
You put tyres under your car for extra safety. Alot of people do it.
I don’t recommend putting your aftermarket wheels though, if anything take your ugly donut spare tire in the trunk and use it lol
Great Video, personally I would have firstly used 2 coats of primer paint then 2 coats of red satin heat resistant paint for a better end result.
This shit takes forever…way easier watching somebody do it in a video .
Looks more like primer than paint.
I like the vid, wish I could see how you taped of the rotor
Look how far you've come. I mean, take a look at that sand paper lol. Info still good 6 plus years after. Ur tha man Chris
"before i touch this caliper again" touches caliper. lol killin me Chris
Anyone else hold their breath when he sprayed the brake clean?
Fatal_Inertia haha
I'm so used to doing that when I do brakes I just saw the can come up and knew what to do lol
ChrisFix what dus that even mean?
Yeah brake clean... the environmentally friendly version of isopropyl lol
It's breakleen
You made it look so easy.
I think I will give this a go.
Just replaced calipers , so not really rusty yet. Seems like a good time.
Thank- you- sir.!
You absolutely need to remove the brake hardware, or “pad clips” as you called them. They allow the pads to move smoothly and getting paint on them doesn’t allow proper movement and could cause premature pad wear along with rotor overheating.
Yeah dude. The title should have been: How to half ass things.
I just changed the disks and pads in my car today and I had to do so much clean up as the calipers were rusted to hell seems to me like this could be avoided with little to no effort or cost.
oversight probably, but who knows.
+linkto thepast It simply does not matter if those parts are rusty or not, they're solid cast iron so they won't rust trough. Rust on them might look bad but it won't hurt functionality.
creak92 well at the same time it can rust through if you leave it in extreme conditions (wet/ exposed)
Moderategamer / why would a company spend extra dollars to make something last longer? Not good for planned obsolescence.
You have to remember manufacturer's mass produce cars, so an increased production cost of just $1/car for someone like Honda would lead to over $1million in extra hard costs. They are going to save as much money as possible for things that are unnecessary. The media, for example, would not care about this at all.
