  • Stuart is a full time fly tying machine and an avid Salmon angler. He was kind enough to tie a fly for me at the BFFI called the GP or General Practitioner. This was done during the show so there is a fair bit of background noise. Stuart gives some great tips for budding fly tiers that are not only applicable to the Salmon Fly tier but and Fly tying. This week and next week will be given over to Stuart Foxall and Mark Robinson who will be showing of their skills. As well as giving me and you a break from my efforts. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed picking Stuart's brain.

Every material has its own purpose and place. The consistency issue is a vital part of quality management. If you are knocking out a selection for teammates prior to a match. Then that consistency matters as much as matching lines leaders etc. Say five of each to each member. If they have variable density or length of hackle. They will present differently. For your own box, some variance in size density of dressing could make a difference for the conditions. Resulting in an extra session on the vice to add a replacement skinny size 14 for the teams current bushy 10s. Micro fabs being a prime example.

@@lindsayiflyfish definitely agree with that one. Every member of the team/support staff have their strengths and roll to play. I love my time on the vice just as much as time fishing. So would take pride in the extra effort to help the team. If it adds even one or two extra fish to the team total for the day. Then it is worth it.

More on purpose of wire tag: Pre 60's double hooks werent soldered/welded as far along the shanks as they are today, and the bends of the hooks would splay outwards more. To combat this, wire tags were used to bind the shanks of the hooks together just above the bend and by the time hook companies started soldering the hook further down the shank the use of wire tags had just stuck. I hope that makes sense!
