Dude . I shot an 85 Saturday with triple AND a quad . But that’s just me . I ALWAYS have at least one total blow up hole . I WISH I was only worried about double bogey, lol .
What is your handicap?
Did the same thing shot 75 with a triple on 8 started off so hot -3 after 2 ended up shooting 37 on that side with a bird on 9 just keep playing that’s the only advice that will help and try to figure out what’s putting those numbers in play
Shot an 81 a few weeks ago, had a 6 followed by a 9 to start the round.
FWIW, the max score that goes down for your handicap is net double ;)
Had a similar half round total was 88. On the back two triples and two birdies, 44 was net on the back…..and the front

Answered elsewhere in the comments, but the gist of it is that I was trying to blur out an incorrect stat I put on the screen and inadvertently left the blur onscreen for too long.
The mental game is so much of what gets you in the 70s. Doubles are score killers but like you’ve said, your next shot can always be the best shot of your day. Gotta stay positive!

What a happy coincidence to see you post a round at Squamish. My son and I played the ere this weekend but I shot 102 and he 90. I got trapped right against the wall of that monstrous bunker but generally a round full of ups and downs

I have been watching your videos for several months now and my golf has gotten more consistant. Not only am I making better choices, but my attitude after a bad shot is litterally, "Oh well, it's not the end of the world". That has helped me lessen the poor shots afrer a bad one and keep a good attitude. It is good to see a single diget handicap show what he is thinking and what happens. Keep up the good work.

Hey Adam. I absolutely love your channel. I took about a 10 year break from golf and having just gotten back into it I've been loving your channel, and also Bob Rotella's "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect". I broke 90 for the first time today with an 88 on a par 72! There were plenty of bad shots in there, but kept it light and positive and despite four double bogeys still made it happen and managed a birdie, par, par run on the last three. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work!

Im new to your channel and just last weekend shot in the high 90's... after taking 2 lessons and been playing for years.. i got very frustrated and for the first time the thought of giving up sounded nice.. thanks for a positive perspective... Hey man! I love your attitude and overall approach to the game. Do you have a criteria for “bad shots”? I know you keep track of them and I am going to start as well. I know the obvious ones like ball OB, fat shot that goes 20 yards, etc. curious your thoughts on short game “Bad Shots”.
Thanks for the kind words. I don't have a black and white set of criteria. Generally, if a drive doesn't give me a chance to reach a green in regulation, I call it a bad shot. And if I miss a green egregiously inside ~150, I'd call that a bad shot. Lag putts that don't wind up inside 3-4' (barring some exceptions on wild greens) would be considered a bad putt. Missing inside 3' would be a bad shot, etc.
I love the way you battle. I really do need to try swingtweaks. I am really good at hitting a ball straight, but my driver only carries about 150 to 170 and the only clubs I have faith in getting consistently good flight are my wedges. All my irons are some variation of a bump and run.

Since I started watching your videos I’ve been keeping track of how many putts I hit in every hole. I found that in my last 10 rounds I’m averaging 2.6 putts per hole which is just abysmal. I’m not sure why I never thought to pay attention to it but from the little bit of real attention I’ve paid to I could easily pick up 10-12 shots if I can keep it to only one or two 3 putts per round. I’ve always thought I needed to focus on my driver and long iron play but it in the end it’s always the flat stick. Here’s to incrementally better golf and smart misses

This video couldnt have come at a better time for me, adam! As someone who started golfing seriously (more than 3 or 4 times a year) this year, and has made it my personal goal to try and break 90 as many times as possible, I had my 2nd worst round all season yesterday, a 104. I did the exact opposite of what your talking about in this video, i mentally collapsed. One bad hole led to more bad shots, which led to follow up bad shots, which led to walking on to the green and just putting the ball without even reading green. It was a complete spiral! I really needed this video to remind me to keep my head in the next shot and forget about every shot that came before it! Love your channel, it gives me hope that one day i may have a chance at being a single digit handicap. Keep up the good work!

I appreciate the rawness of your videos. As someone who's returning to the game after a 30 year absence, I'm practically a beginner (the sport has changed A LOT since I first swung a club). It's nice to see others struggling with the same things I do and learning something new after every round. Gives me hope for my own game.

Sometimes you need a stroke of luck too. I was playing not so great and then chipping in my first ever eagle. Which got the round together. Shot a 82

Hey. Love your content. Since it seems you're going for pin high -> lag putt for me as a beginner can you explain why are there so many under reads on the putts? Why not err on the high side?

Excellent video and thanks Adam. I've just blown out from 6 to 10 and am slowly coming back down. The difference really amounts to how I handle trouble as you say. I'm trying to make better decisions with my shots out of the rough and it's working. As Dave Pelz (the great golf statistician) says, when you hit trouble, you only have to improve on what the previous shot could have been and the cost of your miss will average out to be less than a shot. Thanks for the kind words! I play with friends 90%+ of the time, so that's never an issue. Every now and again, I'll play with just one or two friends and be paired up with others. In that case, I just ask if they mind. My setup is just my iPhone on a small portable tripod and is not particularly invasive, so it's never really been a problem.
Barely 50% of fairways hit. Only 20% scrambling. 18 bad shots. Still had a chance for 79 on 18. This game is wild.

One of the thrills of playing a round of golf is going for the hard shots. It’s personal preference to play safe or go for it. I know my HC would be lower if I played smart golf but that’s boring and I play for fun
Yeah, if that's how you enjoy golf, then go for it. I just find a see a lot of guys who go for high risk shots, fail to pull them off, and then get angry that their score blows up.

@@NotAScratchGolfer you can no longer drop a ball after you hit into a penalty area “where you want”, it has to be closest to where you last hit or to the nearest point where you last crossed the field of play
Dawning on me how ugly good golf can be. Played yesterday with a friend who shot 80. I don't think he hit any of the ten best shots all day. Kept it in play off the tee. Super good on his approaches. Effective (but not great) putting. Simple formula that works.

Something I’ve noticed about the better golfers at my club is they don’t ride the emotional roller coaster. Whether they’ve just made back-to-back birds or a disappointing double, they move on to the next shot like nothing else has happened. It’s “boring golf” personified.
Agreed. I definitely feel the adrenaline pumping when I'm having a good round. But when I'm having a bad round I tend to stay even keeled. It's massively helpful - turn a lot of would-be high-80s rounds into low-to-mid-80s.

Key here is no penalties front 9 from bad shots, made some good punch outs, and 3 great putts and a chip in. Could’ve easily been in the 42-43 range and would’ve scored like you hit it. But your greenside play and short game makes up for it. I’m about a 16 handicap, and this shows those of us in that range what it takes to go from 43-45 on 9, to that 39-41 range.

The secret to your success here is not recovery. It's the fact you hit "18 bad shots" and miraculously didn't lose a single ball or have to take a single penalty stroke. I certainly respect your game and approach, but let's recognize that an average joe would have shot a 100 with these shots because they would have lost 5+ balls.
Can confirm. I lost 4 balls yesterday that a gallery would have found for me. Pushed me into upper 90s because of the penalty strokes

Honestly if all my bad shots ended up live like yours I'd probably be a single hcp as well. Over here those bad shots of yours would automatically result in stroke and distance. Our courses just aren't cleaned up as well, when you hit it into the trees you might as well re-tee.

I played a 91 yesterday. My first close call with playing in the 80s since I started playing again last year, after a close to 15 year hiatus. Two holes in particular blew my chances. Guess what? It's those two holes I tried for the hero shots rather than laying up, putting me in an even worse position and forcing two triples. 😅
The first step is acknowledging you have a problem :p Seriously though, being able to recognize that and correct it is huge.
This was me last round. Only hit 2 fairways and 3 greens all day, but my putting and chipping were on absolute fire; 24 putts for the round and managed to shoot an 86 which is right in my wheelhouse for normal round. Without that short game the round easily could have been a 95 or worse.

I tend to agree. My driver is certainly not "long" now, but respectable. If I could gain some distance with my irons I'd probably be on equal footing distance-wise with most people who play to my cap. Easier said than done, though.
Hitting 260-270 off the tee though will allow you to take those shorter irons in. Should lead to tighter accuracy on your approaches and your work around the green should do the rest. Cheers keep improving
At 7.1 HCP, could you give us an idea of what distance you play from (6000, 6500, or 7000yd tees?) and what the general slope/rating of the courses you play from are? I didn't fully appreciate, especially slope/rating, how much those things can impact a score.
like Squamish is only 71.5/126 from the tips, and only 6400 yards. Which is a fairly easy-ish/short course.
I look at rating/slope more than yardage. I typically don't like to play anything harder than ~1 strokes harder than the rating or slopes above ~135. Squamish Valley is one of the few courses I've played that I think is rated improperly. The consensus of the membership (and by yours truly) is that it plays considerably harder than the rating.
On swing tweaks, can you submit driver and iron swing or only one of the two?
ya you have plenty more bad shots than most 7's Ive seen but inside 100 you make up for it. It's usually the opposite for most weekend 7's.

Are some of these provisionals just for pace of play reasons? I’m almost positive you can’t hit a provisional if you think the ball could be in a hazard.
You are both wrong. Look up the rule
Hmmmm - I tried to find further explanation of the provisional rule. This site from the PGA has a decent short 90 second video on it along with some explanation of the difference between playing with a completely lost ball versus announcing that you are going to hit a provisional when you are unsure if the ball is lost. At the end of this video, the kid clearly hits the ball in the lake, and they explain that you can't hit a provisional if the ball clearly goes into a hazard. Earlier in the video, the girl hits the ball near the woods near the out-of-bounds area. She immediately announces that she is playing a provisional, but finds her original ball later. So, am I correct in seeing the distinction comes down to whether your ball is definitely lost (like when I put one in a lake) versus whether you are unsure if it is lost (near a lake or near out-of-bounds)? @@rayjones1455 Not sure about all of this. Obviously, if you know your ball is in a hazard, there is no reason to play a provisional. I wasn't sure whether my ball would be in a hazard or lost in the thick grass past the hazard. I believe in that instance you are free to play a provisional. In any event, this isn't tournament golf, so I don't get too exercised about it.
@@NotAScratchGolfer I think you were spot on in following the rule Adam! Each time you took a provisional, it was because you were unsure if you ball was either lost or if it had gone in a hazard. The provisional rule was put in place so that golfers who are unsure if their ball is lost can take the provisional before searching for ball - in the event that the ball is lost. Otherwise, golfers would be going back after giving up on a lost ball and trying to find their original shot locations, etc. I am playing this morning. If (when) I clearly hit a ball into the lake on #18 at Saxon Golf Course near Pittsburgh, I will not take a provisional. And, the (older) guys I play lots of exceptions to rules. For example, if the ball rolls into that lake, we just drop right behind the lake where the ball went-in and hit over it (and if that one goes in the lake, just pick up your ball - the hole is over). I'm glad I watched the provisional rule video though for if/when I play with more serious golfers.
Got it, obviously lots of room for interpretation and it falls on the player to ultimately decide. I was confused because if you thought it was lost on hole 6, the provisional should have been played from the spot where you hit your previous shot. Your drop indicated the shot had gone in the hazard.
long time watcher, avid commentor but question......what tech are you using for tee shot distances and why are you using it on all shots?
Not scientific, just subtracting my approach # from the yardage of the hole on the card.

I don't mean this to sound rude because 7hcp is fantastic and I'm quite a new player myself but can i ask if you still practice trying to fix your driver swing?
I only ask because you seem to stay on the same swing plane and don't have a bump/fuck to give yourself leverage on your lead foot to get any push off through extension/release.
The out to in swing plane is why so many slice like that including myself. That and the "whip" are what I'm focusing on now myself. Sorry if this sounds rude in just curious how much someone like yourself will plays with single digit hcp still practice things like that
I have pretty poor body awareness and a stubborn unwillingness to practice, lol.
@@NotAScratchGolfer lol fair enough my friend. I have to thank you though b/c your video "the ten commandments of high handicap golf" actually helped me a lot. Im 6 months in myself and best I ever shot in 9 was 55 but usually its 60~. Commandment 1 especially. I can hit my driver 230~ but it gets me into a lot of trouble and Im not good enough to get myself out of it so I checked my ego and dropped it from my course play for now and use a 5w instead. It goes 200~ which is a hard drop in yardage but I am much much more accurate and consistent with. By doing that and only using my 789PW/SW I was able to go from a best of 55 and 60 average to 48 on my last 9. I can hit my 7i 150 8i 140 9i 130 PW 120 and SW 110 very consistently so those are all I used. I did however play from the senior tees so I wanted to try some holes from the mens box with the same strategy and picked the easiest 4 and the hardest 5 and shot par on both of those as well. Couldnt finish the second 9 b/c ran out of daylight but I was so happy. I practice a ton and play 2x a week but havent taken many lessons other than from people kind enough as yourself to make this content for us to learn from. Thank you so much for that brother it felt so good and I feel I no longer need to play from senior tees any longer since I get get on in 2 with my 5w and 7i. My local course is pretty tough though with slope rating of 133 and 74.7 rating so Im excited to see how next week goes!

It's really your game under 120 yds which is getting your score down. nice job. Also, you got lucky and found a number of your errant tee shots. lose a few of those like I do and it adds to the score quickly.

Whatever your analysis: your good scores are simply due to you not being long enough to REALLY get you in trouble, and your exceptionally good putting…

I'm guessing an 81 on that course is still a 7.something differential.
Came out as an 8.5. This is one of a handful of courses I've played that seems to play much tougher than the rating IMHO.
@@NotAScratchGolfer That's surprising... although maybe it shouldn't be; course ratings are weird. My handicap right now is over a stroke lower than it should be due to 3 of my 8 scores coming at a short course that I find it nearly impossible to lose a ball at.
It seems like ratings break down when a course strays significantly from the average in terms of how forgiving it is for bad shots.

I know you are not playing in an official competition, but technically you cannot hit a provisional ball if you think your ball may be in a water hazard, only if it could be lost outside the hazard or OOB. It is a rubbish rule that should have been fixed years ago but it hasn't been unfortunately.
