You cant enjoy super cars, hellcats or anything of such performance sort on the street. S2000 allows you to hoon in the city even, feel fast, and its what makes it fun.
Kind of overselling the mechanical differences of the CR and the AP2. Very few people keep the original springs/shocks on either car, and usually upgrade to coilovers. The only performance advantage the CR has is the CR wing, which doesn't create any downforce, but does reduce lift. A faster steering ratio also doesn't make steering more "precise". The CR doesn't weigh any less than an AP2. The CR is mechanically just an AP2 with the soft-top permanently removed.

I would love to see a comparison video between the CR and the 350Z Nismo. They were on sale at the same time and have a similar ethos from each manufacturer.
For about 10 years, the engine in the S 2000 put out more horsepower per liter than any other engine in history until Ferrari came out with a bigger more powerful engine per liter later.
I bought mine brand new in 2006 Berlina Black. Drove it like I stole it every chance I had. Did a few modifications throughout the years but the best thing I've ever done to the car is installing a set of Bilstein PSS9 coil overs. She's sitting in my garage with 203k miles :D
The weight with the hardtop on is basically identical to a new modern brz/frs. I’m not sure if that’s applause for brz/frs, or thumbs down for S2000, but I thought it would be lighter
Great video. As a long time AP1 driver, someday I would like to see an on track comparison between a AP1 and the CR. My question is, did all the suspension mods made to the CR give the car a significant edge over the AP1?
Good luck finding one that hasn't been beaten to death within an inch of its life. Most of these cars are wrecked, modified or "organ donors" (parts cars). Thanks for the review
Sitting in my 36k mile unmodified unwrecked '06 Laguna Blue reading this comment.. so glad I bought this 10 years ago. I don't think I'd have the patience to buy one in today's market.
Although the engine is really a double edged sword. It's lots of fun because of the high red line, but then you need to be driving everywhere SCREAMING at 8k RPM to get any decent power and enjoyment... So you risk appearing (sounding) a bit obnoxious by nearly never shifting past 2nd gear! lol
Owned one for 19 years, bought it for 32K new, sold it for 28K, and moved up to a 996 Porshe 4S for $35K; it is much faster, has top speed near 180 stops faster, and handles great. In addition, you don't have to shift like you driving on Adderal; gears have a wide range and are way smoother and roomier. Will say the Honda is nearly maintenance-free, but the Porsche doesn't depreciate much; it has appreciated well since 2019. Near 330 HP and a wheel drive with a wide body like the Turbo (and brakes) will keep you challenged for years.
I had an '06 S2000, great car. Bipolar, it was either under-rev'd and lazy or a screaming banshee. Sold it to upgrade to an '00 NSX. The joke I tell about the difference is that the NSX is all the torque you wish the S2000 had for 4 times the price. For a long time I thought the Miata was redundant when you could buy an S2000, then I drove one. The main difference I found was that the Miata isn't bipolar like the S2000. All great cars, buy the best you can afford and enjoy.
Do you still have the nsx and can you go into detail about owning that. A lot of people on the s2000 fb page say that after owning both the s2000 is more fun than the NSX.
That's my concern with the car. If you want to get any decent power/enjoyment out it then you need to drive everywhere at like 8k RPM! lol I've driven an Si on tracks and it's fun trying to always keep the revs above 7k RPM to keep it 'in vtec', but can get a bit loud/obnoxious on the street... And if you don't get into 'vtec', then they're not MUCH faster than a 'regular' Civic! lol
Yeah, and if you can find a 'MazdaSPEED' Miata, then you get even more torque down at like 4k RPM thanks to the turbo! So you don't have to drive everywhere in 2nd gear with the engine screaming at 8k RPM to make the same power. lol
@@StreetPreacherr the best mod I ever did on my '06 was to reduce the VTEC engagement from 6K to 5100. It just smoothed out that whole 5-6K RPM range but also kept the car in VTEC after a shift if you were redlining it. Big credit to Mazda, I drove TFL's NC Miata and the power was linear and smooth all the way. Overall yeah it's less powerful than an S2000 but the balanced nature vs the S2000's bipolar nature was really nice.

Honda could have sold a lot more of these had they given it enough power. But in typical Honda fashion, they calculated to the individual horsepower, the exact number needed to make the car move, and not a single horsepower more.
How would they have increased the power without losing what made the s2000 special though? They already put in the most powerful NA 2 liter engine in it. Either they could have boosted it, and lost the nature of the NA throttle response and revs, or put in a larger engine which would mess up the perfect weight distribution. Besides, anything more than about 300 hp and the car would lose it's perfect driving balance between handling and power.
The CR is the same, not quicker, not faster, not even better breaking than any other S2000 for the 10-year run, just a few graphics and aero kit that slows it more at lower speeds. You can learn about the car before you write an article after they have been out for 23 years.
