Heavy snow hit south-eastern areas of the UK on the evening of Tuesday 27th February 2018. Whilst on an outing in the 4-7 inch snow I thought I would film a pedestrian crossing on what is usually a busy road. The road was virtually empty today as travel disruption was caused from heavy overnight snow.

Nice video! How the signals operate kinda reminds me of HAWK signals here in the US, with a flashing indication that drivers can cross on when the pedestrian clearance phase comes on, only these signals are more understood by drivers over there and don't need extra wordy signs explaining what to do when the signal starts flashing.

The amber flash on traffic light pedestrian crossings like these resemble the flashing 'belisha beacons' at Zebra crossings in the UK. For a flashing amber signal, drivers are instructed to give way to pedestrians crossing.

@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel im surprised flashing amber signals here aren't used for other purposes like to warn vehicles to slow down or there's hazards ahead as an addition to normal road signs and markings.

Thanks. I agree, looks quite cool. It was heavy snow conditions and I just wanted to film something in the snow :P

UK Level Crossings Channel I don't blame you for wanting to film something in the snow. I wanted to do it as well but most trains services were either delayed or cancelled and I could have filmed traffic lights but I also wanted to enjoy the snow ;)'

Thanks. It usually takes longer but I pressed the button when there was no cars approaching, so the sequence was quick. I'm going to try and film some other types of road crossings soon.

It's a shame that the government won't allow any more new Pelican crossings to be installed; I liked the flashing phase.

Hmmm. There's still plenty of them around. I'll try and film some puffin, toucan and possibly an equestrian crossing (think I know where one is) soon for my channel.

But I guess they can upgrade existing ones because the Pelican crossing in Raynes Park got its traffic lights bulbs replaced with LED's (the actual traffic lights seem to be the same as before)

I hate these crossings, as the majority of pedestrians have no idea what the flashing green man means. It means you must NOT start to cross, you may continue to cross only if you are already on the crossing. A flashing red man would be far safer.

When pelican crossings were first introduced, they had a white cross instead of a green light, how long did this last, any photos or videos of these? I think it was sometime in the late sixties.

Yeah they are slightly longer. I don't really have a favourite, I like both.

My personal favourite are Mellor era lights, which are the large halogen lights from the 1970s to 1990s
